TOP 3 Worst ESO Changes in 11 Years

Hi :)
It's the anniversary jubilee, another opportunity to take stock of this.

What is for you the TOP 3 worst changes in the game in 11 years ?

for me it was:
1. account wide achievement
2. tamriel unlimited: the fact that you can start from any location regardless of your base faction (besides doing the quests of the other factions, which goes back to the game's release, but I always found it completely stupid)
3. vampire ultimate change. omg it's so ugly I much preferred the ultimate in the swarm of bats

I don't know if it was bad for the game, it just annoyed me and it still annoys me today

And you ?

The AWA cured any motivation to make an alt. And U35 broke something in me.

The loss of my lightning bolt for a shovel was a game changer.

To me ESO has gone downhill from there and the pinnacle of course is the loss of class identity that subclassing will bring.

I don't know where I will go from here but what I thought was in my future is gone.

Ten years a sub and this is first time I will not do it.

    This is my top 3:
    1. One-Tamriel, it made the game too easy.
    2. Account-wide achievements, this made starting a new character unfun.
    3. Reducing maxiumum group size from 24 to 12, this created a new hardship for guilds that frequently ran large groups.

    1. Level scaling that came with one tamriel that ultimately (IMO) negated any sense of exploration, achievement, and satisfaction in overland content, which is a vast majority of the experience of this game
    2. Expansion of the crown store. It started out pretty sparse and there was a decent bit of stuff to earn in game. Over time they've traded in game rewards and meaningful questlines for cash shop re-skins of mounts and such along with skips for skill lines made to be monotonous purposefully to drive players to the store
    3. Not so much a change, but just the overall approach to stories overtime has deteriorated - especially in chapter releases where it's the same plot line every single year: big bad comes in, world ending threat, we stop it, everyone's happy. More so at the LACK of change here

    Edit: grammatical and spelling errors

    1. AwA. It reduced my time in ESO because it killed replayability for me.
    2. Dropping the annual chapters and reducing story/zone content.

For me, there isn't a third thing that's as bad as those two. Subclassing will shoot to number 1 if playing my main as a pure class is no longer fun or viable. I'll see on that one.

    1) If it comes live as it announced, then subclasses

    2) Account wide achievements. It took the motivation for raid groups to replay trifectas on alts, which was the start of the dying of raid groups

    3) Achievements that require to have more than 1 char. I have played 5 years with only one char and was happy with it.
Now they added stuff like "have all classes on level 50" or an achievement for all 3 Alliances.
At least those new alts are good at crafting.

    1. The dumpster fire of Update 35.
    2. Neon cartoon exploding mounts.
    3. Changing numerous sets from affecting 'nearby allies' to affecting 'group members' (Earthgore, Winter's Respite, etc).

That said, I would feel remiss if I did not mention some of what I consider to be major improvements that I greatly appreciate such as the entire outfitting system (what good is adventuring if you can't look good doing it?), introducing the companion system, account wide achievements. :)

Not a super popular opinion from what I can tell, but: I loathe forced hybridization, and the incessant whittling away at the Support roles has essentially killed any desire I have to play group content like Dungeons and Trials. I've been a dedicated Healer/Tank for nearly 20 years of MMOs. I don't enjoy being strong-armed into the DPS competition. So I've essentially stopped engaging with that content entirely, which is sad because it used to be among my favorite activities. I don't think I'm alone feeling that way, but Support was always a minority player base so the mob tends to shout us down in these discussions.

Instead of making Support roles more rewarding/engaging/cool/etc, they just... decided everyone should be a DD, because DPS is more popular. Like... okay, I guess. Enjoy that development ouroboros of "infinite diversity" enforced hybridization that eventually turns everything into the same grey slop.

This one wasn't the absolute debacle that some others might have been in terms of scale, but that animation change just felt so unrequested and then SO poorly received that the fact it's never been reverted or even truly acknowledged has been a major pain point in my faith and trust in game decisions ever since.

It's so bad and out of sync with all the other spear animations, yet it feels like the Devs dug in even harder out of stubborn pride or outright animosity at the criticism.

Kind of surprised that so far AwA and OT are on many lists ITT. I played on and off since beta, loved Elsweyr, then left and returned sometime after High Isle and stayed since. So I wasn't around for U35, no idea what happened. For me, AwA and One Tamriel were good changes: I have no desire to re-do things I've already done – some only for a dye/furnishing/etc. to begin with. (Like why do I still have to re-log in on my old main to buy Elsweyr achievement furnishings? Oversight? I'd be happy if furniture plan learning could be account-wide also; some are expensive and it's irritating to accidentally eat one on an alt.)

No interest in harder overland. I always play stealthy with Shadow Rider so I only engage in combat (or harder content, vet) when I choose to. Hate contending with nuisance mobs that to me are just hurdles in the way of the actual goals. Harder story/delve bosses would be fine the first time around, but if questing on alts to get some # of quests for an achievement; I just want it to be fast. So if they're talking about implementing higher difficulty, that needs to be optional.

For me, the bad stuff was always related to aggressive monetization and sensory irritations:
    • The crown crate system,
    • When Alfiqs were introduced as the very first reskin of banker & merch, with no discount for long-time players who had the old ones, setting a precedent,
    • Exploding and noisy mounts, recalls, etc. and the fact that nothing has been done about the flapping Twilight except to make it even worse: BRIGHT RED – a color used for attention-getting IRL, associated with alerting, anger, etc. (Related: Please let flying pets sit; neon pathing mess in Housing edit mode)

For me, AwA was a good idea in theory. It was the implementation that went wrong. If they'd stuck to making grindy/difficult achievements account-wide, like the undaunted 100/100 ones, all the 30/30 ones, and difficult ones (vet, trifecta, arenas, trials), I would have been cool with that. But they took a sledgehammer to it and made just about everything account-wide, including quest achievements and other ones that should have been per character. And they destroyed the map for alts by completing most of it for them, making it difficult to keep track of what each character has completed.

    Limited to three?

    1. Acct wide achievements - not that I am against them, and I do find them gratifying at times. AwA significantly impacts alt characters for role-playing or otherwise, in my opinion. And a simple toggle would have fixed that.

    2. Everyone is a damage-dealer now. I generally play solo DPS but enjoy being party healer at times (not very good at melee, honestly, so no main tanking for me). With hybridization, the roles are reduced, ridiculed, and virtually eliminated for most content. All you need to do for dungeons is toggle the trinity, and after you're in switch back to DPS (hence some of the anger at "fake" tanks and healers).

    3. Increasing catering to the flashy, nonsensical additions - like the Mardi Gras parade float outfits and Las Vegas 'fan' dances recently, Coldharbour recall animations and noise, very bright mounts and their animations, etc. I know some enjoy these as is evidenced by the number who race to buy the latest. And I suppose that's the whole point - money. It's almost as if more effort is be put into these cosmetic pixels rather than high quality content, but that may also be completely unfair to the talented people who work behind the scenes to provide both. I really like pretty, but I also prefer things which fit within the game world in a logical way. :: shrugs ::

Companions should be on the list, but we're limited to 3 ;) . Going through their entire recruitment and life-story questline on every character every time (where's the cursed AwA when you need it?!?!?) is boring, obnoxious, and silly. The peculiarities of a few of them are weird, too. I've begun running without a companion again since overland isn't nearly as challenging as it was, as long as you're careful in spots, obviously. Come to think of it, I don't have all the current companions unlocked on either account on either server. And NO interest in the latest pair at all.

One of the things I've been wondering since subclasses were announced is why I'm still bothering to reconstruct healer gear. "You don't a healer/tank" is already a common sentiment in normal content, and a 40-50% jump in damage is only going to make it worse.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).
