Mine is... no thank you. It was.... not all that great in WoW (I played WoW from early 2006 to mid 2013, left because of the direction - wasn't going to be fun for me - haven't ever touched that game again).

And this game would need to be moved to a new engine (which would probably be +7 - 10 years from now) so... nah.

It'd be cool to reach places I'm normally not supposed to get to, but other than that, I find it hard to see the advantages of flying to any other part of the game.

Imagine a year where the main feature is just flying mounts. What does flying let you accomplish? It probably can't be used in Cyrodiil because you could skip over keep walls, and there aren't any PvE scenarios (overworld or otherwise) where flying would give you an advantage. Flying doesn't really tie into combat as you can't mount in combat, nor does it tie into housing as you can't mount inside houses.

That being said, I do think when done right, a flying mechanic can be fun. WoW reworked their flying mount mechanics and added speedrun challenges utilizing it — so I think some minigame involving flying mounts would keep me busy with the feature, especially if the rewards for participating with it tied back into the other systems in the game, sort of like how Tales of Tribute is designed.

I haven't seen it implemented well enough in any game to be tempted by it.

Would I want it if it would work amazingly perfectly and I could soar above all locales and land anywhere and have it add a whole other layer of strategy to the game? Yes, I would love that.

Do I want it in a fairly old game that doesn't even allow me to swim through shallow water while mounted? Nah. I'd rather they spend time on things that would feasibly improve current issues.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

I do think adding in more flying(mounts, player abilities, gliding, floating, etc) to the game is possible because there's already plenty of creatures that already fly such as dragons, harpies, birds, butterflies, and more in the game.

So yes I would like the ability to fly.

those enemies fly because they are scripted to fly, it wouldnt work the same for players

like dragons for example fly only very specific routes, there is no variation

We have almost every big rock formation blocked by invisible walls from all possible directions since like what, Elsweyr? They're cutting corners with every possibility they can get, no traversal at all compared to base game and first dlc's so it's definitely not planned in a slightest.

It also would add literally nothing until they're basically redo whole zones from scratch for it to work and would add mechanics for flying to make sense, making zones borderless, filling all the gaps etc. so more like remaking the whole game. Is that possible, yes? It is likely? You know the answer to that most probably.

You do know that the games are running on completely different engines. You could fly in Morrowind as well, why the hell not in TESO?

It just doesn't work like that. For one, TESO has been designed as more flat game overall. Heck, you are hard coded not to jump over a fence. A lot of areas have physical obstacles that don't allow you to progress - canyons, walls, cliffs. Also, nearly all dungeons / delves have shortcuts that can be exploited with flying.

While flying is cool, i don't think TESO is ready for such a fundamental change. And all yay-sayers are pipe-dreaming.

Loved it in WoW, even quit WoW when they removed it. But it does not fit in ESO.

So ESO should not have flying, in my opinion.

PS: Would have gone back to WoW if they actually had flying still, as they used to have it. (duo playing it with ESO at the same time)

We don't have to worry about what the dragon sees from up there. That seems to be issue. The difficulty of flying is rarely about actually letting players leave ground. It is about rendering the game world properly from such heights and weird angles. The ESO engine is not designed to do that.
  • Treeshka

I do not think engine can handle anything flying. Correct me if i am wrong here.

Your character somehow needs to touch the ground. You can not even open your mail box in mid jump. Best we can get is a mount like Gryphon, but that even needs invisible legs, if flying is not an option, always touching the ground. So more like we can get gliding mounts.

To be honest, I thought it ruined Morrowind by allowing you to skip essentially everything. And I can't see it happening in ESO as they'd have to redesign a staggering number of environments (think of the many, many, many locations where the shortcut out once you've finished is a drop specifically designed to be high enough you can't reach it on the way in).

But I haven't been back to SWTOR since I started playing this game in 2018.

There's no sense in pining for it in this game since the engine isn't designed for it.

That Ship has sailed. None of the Zones we have are made with flying in mind so they would have to introduce invisible walls or rework the borders of those maps. Also some Cities on those Maps are instanced so they would also put invisible walls over those so you don't attempt to land in the placeholder image you see from far away when looking at a city.

I also don't think they would ever spare the needed work force to get all that done. They are already cutting back on everything, even the Story for the latest Chapter will be spoon fed to us. So no, i do not thin Flying will ever happen in ESO.

      • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
      • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

I think with the game’s limitations, the best we can get is a hovering mount that is only a meter or so off the ground at this moment.

This being said, it can open the door for gryphon mounts.

I think they'd be kinda cool for a little while as a new thing to try, but the stuff that interests me in ESO is located down on the ground so I'm not sure how much I'd really use a flying mount once the novelty wore off. Regardless, it would likely require a new engine... keep in mind that things you see "flying" in the game, like dragons, are just following a scripted path.

Also a core part of the map design is that height is frequently used as a means of limiting access, and currently inaccessible areas of the maps were likely left empty, so it would also require a lot of development work. Rather than flying over lovely mountains, one might be flying over an ugly mess of textures that was never meant to be seen. Some zones have instanced areas (such as the main cities in newer zones) so one could not actually even seamlessly fly around one single zone in many cases. And instanced quest areas might be accessed in unintended ways, breaking quests. Etc.

Reaching the edge of an existing map and flying "over" the mountains, or walls, or ocean full of slaughterfish that currently defines the map edge would NOT take you to the adjoining map... at best you would hit an invisible wall and at worst it might take you into an undeveloped void area with unpredictable results, such as your character getting stuck or the game crashing. (people have sometimes discovered such voids through gaps accidentally left in rocks / walls).

Imo such technical challenges coupled with apparently limited resources being put into further development of eso make highly unlikely that flying mounts can or will ever be added. And there are much better ways they could spend their development resources, instead of putting in a ton of work to add a novelty feature that imo wouldn't really bring anything to the game.
