From Fun to Frustration: How Toxicity is Killing Content in ESO

I have to share this with all of you.

So, I love the HA build, for so many reasons. But right now, I won’t go into detail. I just want to say: I really love HA!

However, as you all know, playing with this build isn’t easy. I mean, of course, the build itself is simple, but being accepted in groups? That’s a whole different story. It’s insanely hard to get into HM content and endgame trials. And since I’ve already completed all my quests, and almost owning all items, there’s not much left for me to do in-game to keep myself entertained.

So, I did something crazy, I bought another account! Yeah, why not? Time to start all over again.
After leveling up my new character, going through the story, and finally reaching CP160, I started running normal trials. And you won’t believe what I discovered…
Players in normal trials are AMAZING. Seriously. it’s like stepping into a completely different world. Players are friendly, helpful, and just there to have fun. No one cares if you have one bar, two bars, or even if you go in naked. They just want to play the game. And it’s incredible!

As a veteran player, all I’ve ever seen in vet trials is toxicity. Players get kicked for having low CP. Others are bullied for their low DPS. And honestly? We, the veteran players, are the ones killing the game. Yep, I finally understand why so many players quit. Veteran content is just way too toxic.

On my main account, I have a long list of ignored players, either because I was toxic, they were toxic, or we just ended up ignoring each other. But guess what? In normal trials, some of those same players and I are friends! Why? Because we’re just playing the game for fun. It’s a completely different experience.

Now, here’s where things get even more frustrating.

On my main account, I have 8k+ Crowns. My wife has 4k+. And yet, we can’t gift them. As you might understand, I can’t play without my merchant, banker, and other essential NPCs. So, I reached out to support and asked them to remove Crowns from my account and use them to gift a Merchant, just a Merchant, to my other account. Support said no. -.-

So now, I have to return to my main account because I literally can’t play the game without NPCs and ESO Plus, I understand that many players can handle this, traveling to a city, selling, returning, and repeating the process. But, I can't (Consequence of years of bad habits in ESO). That means going back to the toxic environment, back to dealing with ignored players, and back to the same frustrating experience.

And you know what? This is 100% ZoS’s fault. Why? Because certain addons have made players more obsessed with DPS than actually playing the damn game. Only normal players and newer players truly enjoy the game for what it is. And for a brief moment, I got to experience that joy too.

But not anymore. Not after this;

Sadly heavy attack builds don't put out enough damage for some of the hard mode trials. I've never had any of my guild mates be toxic other than joking around during the hundreds of vet trials I've done. It may be who you choose to do content with. <shrug>

I do enjoy HA builds as well, very versatile. I do feel they need some love for higher end content though, better buffing sets or rework old sets that underperform.

You're completely wrong about that. But anyway, this isn’t about HA. It’s about spending my own Crowns to gift my own accounts.

Last comment I’ll make about the HA build in this topic. ^^ this isn’t about HA

If you're talking about Trifectas, I can agree with you... (Maybe not...well... i can.... but...) But if you're talking about any HM—yes, any HM (Cloudrest +3 included)—invite me and show me one I can’t complete because of the HA build.

Interesting read. I for one would of just made a new character instead of creating a new account. I can only really justify new account shenanigans for transferring from console to PC and vice versa.

Have you tried joining a guild? You'll probably have a better time getting accepted into endgame trial content by building rapport with guild members.

I have like 4 characters that focus on heavy attack rotations. It is my ideal way to play, but regardles of one's playstyle one should strive to reach certain milestones to not be a burden in content.

My hot take is this for a solo parse on a 3 million HP dummy.
35k - All content including hard mode vet trials
30k - Vet DLC dungeons (with hard mode) and Vet trials (no hard mode)
    25k - Vet Normal Dungeons
    20k - Normal content

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

That is what I do, pugging trials isn't much fun to me. Some discords like Aedra's etc have real solid groups but usually have higher requirements and I feel I barely make the cut. I am doing the heavy sorc thing in a guild vRG HM prog currently and have fun. Bahsei is a pain but we have her down to 37% last week. Slowly making progress, I much prefer group synergy with players you know and are comfortable with.

As far as the OP's crown trading fiasco, I feel ya, I had to jump through hoops and contest my first denial. My account was created in 2016 I think. :D Eventually it was cleared, I don't know all the parameters they look at but it was frustrating. Foreign bad actors ruin all the things for the average gamers.

I didn't realize it was about not being able to gift yourself Crown Store items; I thought it was about the difference in toxicity between normal players/content and veteran players/content, as brought about by the existence and reliance on add-ons for inspecting other players' DPS outputs during group content, especially with regard to Heavy Attack builds?

It's like 99.5% of your post is about that, but then 0.5% is about not being able to gift Crowns, and you're saying that the 0.5% is what you're actually wanting to say.

I'm not criticizing, just saying that that's where and why the confusion arose. /shrug

For the perspective, all it takes for a normal trial to become same as the experience you're describing in vet HM's is just to eventually find out you were the only person who knew what he was doing on a last boss where some mechanic exists that you simply can't carry the group by yourself alone (or couple of you). It's not about veteran or hm, it's about people stumbling upon an issue and not being able to process it in a healthy way.

I know you said this is about crowns, but given the title and direction of the post I feel I should say this in case someone stumbles across here later. Vet trial PuGs usually expect you know what you’re doing because they’re not training runs, and the way I look at it is that a non-zero amount of players in PuGs do so because they’re too toxic to be in guilds. Some guilds are toxic, but not all of them. The thing with HA builds is there’s not a whole lot of experienced leads and some of them have been burned too many times by HA players being unable or unwilling to adapt to content and mechanics. DPS also does matter, while I think people are too competitive about their damage output, the lower the DPS the exponentially harder it gets on the supports (less resources, more brainpower usage, tanks may start to struggle with keeping the fight organized, etc.), let alone failure of DPS checks. That said, the problem with HA in Cloudrest isn’t damage, it’s Relequen’s mechanic. If you have oakensoul on, you’re cursing someone else (who may be a support) with not being able to barswap. If too many people with oakensoul join Cloudrest, iirc people with the ring will get the mechanic and, unable to barswap, will kill everyone.

Well... vCR+3 is hard for new groups, but vRG, vDSR, vSE and vLC hardmodes are leagues above vCR in terms of difficulty.
I think you could probably do older hms and trifectas with a HA build, but new hms would really be painful to prog without optimizing group dps. And it's not just single-target dps, you also really need cleave and utility. In older trials there were slow strats for most encounters, but I just don't see beating something like Bahsei hm or vDSR twins with a slow tactic. If it's possible, it would be significantly harder.
If you are having troubles finding groups for older hms, you could try making a prog group yourself. There are many HA players, I'm sure you can find enough people. :) At the end of the day no one can actually gatekeep you from the content.

Is your older account in any guilds? Also, if you're able and willing to buy ESO+ for the newer account, why not just use the crowns from plus to get the merchant?

That said, the problem with HA in Cloudrest isn’t damage, it’s Relequen’s mechanic. If you have oakensoul on, you’re cursing someone else (who may be a support) with not being able to barswap. If too many people with oakensoul join Cloudrest, iirc people with the ring will get the mechanic and, unable to barswap, will kill everyone.

At one point oakensouls were viable and even good in +3 but now it is putting more strain on already strained supports. Eventually an oakensoul user can be cursed if enough people die or there isn't enough viable targets. I opted to just do the arcanist thing in vCR now. I would much rather do heavy attack builds, but it isn't fair to the rest of the group/supports.

It would be nice if the gifting privilege at least had its criteria outlined at some point to take the guess work out of the whole process. It's just another thing that feels foisted upon the players because of a few bad actors.

    I wish you good luck.

I want to see, how you finish vCr+3 with a HA one bar build. In best case all dds with that build:D

It's doable, but it means anyone not in oakensoul has to deal with bar swap. Also, if someone with bar swap mechanic does, it can go on the 1 bar player anyway, which means they will just die and potentially take out other players.

Additionally, players are allowed to decide the manner in which they complete content. 1 bar builds can theoretically complete all HM content and any trifecta thru probably Planesbreaker. But they cannot complete it with the strats I personally wish to use in that content - for example, 0 portal cloudrest or 2 portal Bahsei, both of which have DPS checks in order to complete them tbe way I want to complete them.

Yeah, I feel for you. But I didn’t even ask them to "enable gifting." I just asked support for help to "remove Crowns from my account and add a Merchant in the other." just sad :(

I think the complicated request is more the reason for the denial than the situation of your account.

Just switch to the perspective of the service agent. You are requesting a non standard service action needing the offical consent of both account owners (regardless is its the same person, needs to be checked) instead of just asking for a Flag on your account in a process thats maybe even automated.

I recommend filing another Ticket just asking for the account to be enabled to gift instead of asking them to transfer crowns to other accounts, which most likely is not done at all.

This thread is like 3 things in one. What's your main point? That vet content is toxic? That ZOS should enable gifting on your acccounts? HA builds are cool? And how are the latter two "killing content"?
    • That vet content is toxic?
In my opinion, yes, with 100% certainty.
    • That ZOS should enable gifting on your acccounts?
Why should they? I’m no different from any other player. There are rules for enabling gifting, and that’s fine. But we can still ask for support, right?
    • HA builds are cool?
They are definitely cool, mate. You might like 2 bars, others might prefer just one. Nothing wrong with that. But they’re cool for sure.
    • "killing content"
Maybe you’ll find that out for yourself in-game. Maybe not...

I really don’t think so. I understand there are rules, and that’s fine.
But I also understand that support is there to help customers, or at least should be, in a reasonable way.
It can’t always be about money. That’s just wrong! Support can easily remove the Crowns from my account, I’m sure of it. And then gift an item of equal value to another account? Come on... do you really think that’s hard? It can’t be, and it won’t be.

Players on the forum can't unlock crown gifting or fulfill a support request.

Getting testy with them for making suggestions isn't going to resolve anything. Sorry about the trouble with crown gifting and good luck.

You're completely wrong about that. But anyway, this isn’t about HA. It’s about spending my own Crowns to gift my own accounts.

No offense, but if you’re here to discuss Crown gifting, then the HA paragraphs are a bit of a red herring.

The reason I ask if you're in a guild is because I have heard that's one factor in being able to gift crowns, although players are guessing since they haven't released a list.

there is a clear statement in the FAQ that it is aginst the rules to transfer crowns between accounts. It´s an unconditional "NO".

    https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/#en/answer/26360

so the Service Agent can´t help you, even if you assume its easy (which direct interventions in customer accounts never are for customer protection and fraud reasons).

I am afraid you have to play this by the rules and gift the merchant or let it be. Expecting others to break rules and risk their job for you is kind of entitled.

That’s exactly what I’m asking. "Expecting others to break rules and risk their job for you." You’re right.
I thought I could ask for support, but I was wrong. And for this, I want to thank you all for opening my eyes and helping me realize how wrong it is. Even though I understand the rules, I expected some support. I’m not asking to enable gifting, but asking for support is like asking to break the rules... yeah!
