Can something done about Beggars in zone chat?

This player has been going zone to zone for several days now asking for others to give them 1 million gold because they are in such dire need of getting a crate pack.

In my opinion this is a form of exploiting other players. If this isn't against the ToS I feel that it should be.

Can anything be done about this?

    owaosij147yo.png

It’s not exploiting. It is annoying, but apparently works and so they keep at it. So much so that I know who it is, as do a bunch of people in one of my guilds. When they are not asking for 1M gold, they are asking to buy crates for 5M. I don’t know why anyone does anything but ignore this person. Thankfully, I haven’t seen a lot of people doing this — hopefully it doesn’t start a trend. :unamused:

I had this one too. And he is not the only one: it's more and more often. I don't like it. In my main game, it's very rare because begging for gold is against policy and will be reported. But it seems it's not the case in ESO?

I talked to a beggar some days ago. He told me that he makes a fortune that way. He says that no matter the lie he is using, there are always a few players (more than one!) sending him gold. It's not always the full million but usually quite big amounts. He told me that he always play this way, doesn't feel any sort of guilt and since it works, he doesn't see any valid reason to stop enjoying.

Sad... It's like those selling gold for real money: as long as it works, why should they stop?

I think it is doing harm because it is spam, for one, which IS against the ToS. And it creates conflict in zone chat with players that are fed up with this kind of thing going on for days at a time.

We should not have to block all zone chat because of these players. I like to keep zone open so if others are asking for help with a World Boss, for example, I am able to hear this and lend a hand.

be careful with insisting everything you dont like is spam. Someone might hold you up to that same standard.

I don’t understand why people fall for and thereby encourage that type of behavior. :( It’s entirely a different thing than asking for help — I am happy to help newer players and those who genuinely could use assistance.

How does this other game effectively make it against policy? You can be reported for asking for currency? Or would the leeches just ask for dreugh wax? The lowball WTB are almost that… But I wouldn’t want a policy that inhibited new players from being able to ask for materials and other help they may need.

I agree that blocking zone chat is a poor solution (although sometimes I do when it is in general becoming too much). I think it’s obnoxious and despicable behavior, but unfortunately I don’t think it falls under spam, as that I think means messages in rapid succession, not simply posting in one zone chat after another, which people may do to form groups for things, advertise their group finder group, etc. Although that’s not a day after day thing… 🤔 Alas, the most effective option would be not rewarding and encouraging such behavior. Why anyone rewards it is beyond me.

And that's the trick. They beg for something "small" in multiple chats with large audiences, like zone and guild chats. And because thing is "small", many people will quietly send, and in fact some will send 10x or 100x requested amount even. And next day, they need another 1 chitin for writ...

As an aside, I wonder if anyone (or multiple people!) has gifted them the mil

Bunch of people have. Saw several in Craglorn bemoaning the fact that they'd been gullible enough to send gold only to see the messages continue. It's certainly a shame that people are getting scammed due to their kindness. When he was being confronted about it, the scammer in question openly admitted to having made 10mil+ that night alone, and to having been gifted the 8,000 crown pack the night before.

Personally, I'm enjoying watching the scammer cycle through his various characters and alternate his messaging. Which crown store item will he choose today to create a sense of sympathy and urgency?! And will he be on his level 9 scantily-clad bosmer thirst trap dancing by the wayshrine, or will he whip out the altmer today? :joy:

he's selling you the opportunity to be kind and generous. You get positivity for donating and he sells you those feelings for your donation. seems like a legit transaction to me.

Someone just gave me 10 mil, though it's technically a loan and they have given me that amount before o loan so they know i'm good for it. Once someone gave me 2mil. I have certainly given a person a mil without flinching.

why not just give them tthe cash if you have it and want some good feelz?

If you want to actually help, why not find a newer player and help them get set up with what they want or need? At this time of year, why not check out the gifting thread? These people who routinely beg in zone chat are just users and while many who send gold may very well have the best intentions, they are not helping anyone.

Yeah, it's a bit odd and it's quite unlikely that someone will gift a million gold. On the other side they are just asking and doing no harm, so it's definitely not against ToS.

Just put them on your ignore list, if you feel bothered or deactivate zone chat completely. The latter also helps with the countless guild advertisements and crown buying inquiries. (I did so, because both is annoying me although it's not against ToS either.)

Sadly this persons bit does work, they shouted this same advert in Craglorn the other night to which I repled "Weren't you asking for 1 mil away for the frost polymorph last week?"

Someone quickly replied to me saying they were laughing because they felt sorry for this person and gave them 1 mil for that last time, and they were floored to see it in the zone chat again for a whole new crown crate bundle.

There are a lot more toxic conversations going on in Zone Chat than gold beggers.

And honestly I will take the beggers and players asking for help and the guild adverts over the types of conversations that some people feel they need to have in said zones.

One thing I'd like to point out though, as there have been people like that over the years. Sure, some go, new come, but I'd ask ZOS to increase the limit on blocking people. You are more likely to have more people on the "Blocked" list rather than on the "Friends" list.

If someone is asking for a million gold, you can assume it is a scam.

Even if the guy isnt lying what he is going to use the mil for. Which, btw sounds like crown crate gifting in exchange for gold.

Saw this in chat, thought it was a scam, reported it as such. Only saw it the once, or I would have probably reported it as spamming instead, which the report function has a category for.

Report it and let ZOS sort it out. Whatever ZOS decides, you don’t have to see the scammer in chat anymore.

Difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 9 years. 6 paid expansions. 25 DLCs. 41 game changing updates including A Realm Reborn-tier overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver&Gold as a "you think you do but you don't"-tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game.

    Several things can be done:

    1. Ignore them.

    2. Block them.

    3. Ridicule them for being lazy scum, or

    4. Spam zone with messages so you drown out their message.

#3 is my preferred method for dealing with people like this. If they need crowns, they can always get a job and buy them themselves.

    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

So he asked for gold and said what he wanted and why. He is called a scammer.
In gift exchange thread there are players asking for a lot more than this "scammer". How do we call them?
Not going to lie, 1kk gold wont hurt as much as gifting an entire Item from crown store.
Im not going to talk if he is a scammer or not. It just wierd to me that there is so many worse "scams" close by and nobody talks about them. But someone asked the same thing on the zone chat and he is big bad guy.

Whilst it can be annoying (if it gets spammy), it's really not a big deal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't even have a million to my name. But if someone gets on zone chat and asks for help with fishing (for example) I'll often send some Artaeum pickled fish bowls their way.

They imply, in some of their long whiny posts, that they’ve been working so long and hard for such-and-such item and this is just the last bit they need, when really they’ve been doing this for a long time now. Multiple zones, every day. Perhaps “scam” is not exactly right but it’s generally deplorable behavior.

How can you compare the gifting thread??? People are invited to post their wishes there. Now if someone were to constantly make new posts, asking for the “one” thing they so desperately need, that would be approaching the same thing. I haven’t seen that and indeed, it would not be so easy to do as old posts don’t just disappear, etc.

Just thought I'd add - some on here have (perhaps jokingly, perhaps more seriously) recommended confronting the beggar in various ways.

While merely calling out their behavior in chat and warning others is not a bad idea at all, I would advise caution in going any farther. Some of the people who exhibit undesirable behavior in zone chat are *looking* to bait others into breaking the ToS themselves. Best to ignore or report. Don't take it too far and risk your own account over someone else's poor behavior!
