this game needs name police, names are not sentences or phrases ....

Players can name their characters what ever they want unless if the name is against the rules. I'm ok with what ever names players give their characters even if the name is a sentence, phrase, or even a funny pun.

I've seen lots of silly, cool, unusual, names in this game and as well in other games. I have some characters that have goofy names too. It's totally fine 👍.

This seems totally reasonable. Tbh, every name should need to be approved by every active player before it can be used.

This game needs no name police, please just leave us alone to play how we want. As long as we're not using offensive names, it's not hurting anyone, so get over it.

Even though lore-friendly or thematic names for characters are great, I do enjoy seeing players with puns in their names and funny phrases. As long as they are not offensive, it's good to have creative freedom or indeed the choice to name a character 'abcd' if a player simply couldn't come up with something else

Whenever the topic of acceptable or desirable names comes up it reminds me of someone years ago who was standing in Daggerfall (at the time that was one of the starting locations) asking everyone how they got "invisible letters" in their names, until someone said "Do you mean a space?".

Apparently it had never occured to him that a game would let you do that, he thought everyone had found some special character which glitched and didn't show. He was so happy when he found out all you had to do was hit the space bar.

I once made the shortest and fattest possible bosmer sorcerer with a name Pharthy (she looked like a female dwarf) and game allowed it, which is fun. I think naming rules should remain as they are.

Game might allow a name but that doesn't mean it's in accordance with the rules. There is no time limit on getting pulled up for trying to slip past the name police - it might be years and you can still get caught out.

Zenimax does police the names. They work off reports from players and eliminate names that are offensive or essentially taking someone's IP.

Of course, it is Zenimax who makes these decisions and I expect Slayer and Iamgodaroundhere are not going to be considered offensive even if they may be a little hopeful.

I think that there is a pretty high bar when it comes to names, although, when you get into multiple languages, phonetic spellings, and the like, it may not seem that way.

i remember in everquest character names had to be somewhat fantasy characterish. It's very stupid to see people in this game running around with names like zzzzxxxslayerzzzxxxx or iamthegodaroundhere or whatever. i am not a role player but i do think names need some policing.

I saw one the other day called xballc*usherx or something like that I couldn’t believe it. (I hope I don’t get in trouble for posting this [snip]). Regardless I think it’s terrible when people make stupid and offensive names like that.

Not only is it lore breaking and immersion breaking it’s just tasteless.

I have always hated phrases as "names" and prefer that only "real" names were allowed but I don't know how they would determine what makes a name real. (Argonian names are the exception.)

When I see someone with a name like IBeatYouUp I just can't take them serious and don't want to get to know them.

I don't particularly enjoy these names but I don't think they should be released and I don't judge the players who use them unless it's something actually reportable. We may have different tastes in entertainment but one of the nicest dudes in a game I ever met had character named PunchKicker.

The name we present to others says a lot about who we are. I'm sure there are some very nice players behind some of these phrase names but I'll never know because I am just not compelled to get to know players that I feel I would have nothing in common with.

Thank you! This MADE my day. I got a really good genuine laugh out of it.

Although I don't think we should have "name police" more than we do, my FEELINGS agree with @SilverBride
Silly names (Argonians not included) mildly annoy me in general and since that is my first impression of them, it's a general turn off.

Some names are fiendishly clever in their deception. I remember a couple of years ago someone who I met in a dungeon sent me a friend request. I accepted and it wasn't until later that I spoke the name out loud to myself that I realised it was offensive - wouldn't offend everyone, but did me. I unfriended him immediately.

Bear in mind the same person can do both serious, lore-friendly names and silly names, it's not necessarily a judgement on them as a person.

All my permanent characters have meaningful names which at least look lore-friendly. But if I'm making a temporary character anything goes. Sometimes they're also lore friendly names (2 I ended up using permanently), sometimes it's a joke, sometimes it's the first thing to come into my head.

Or it could be both at the same time. In another game I have a character called Barwn Y Mers, a (reasonably) lore-friendly Welsh name. It also literally means Edge Lord and is a meme reference. Admittedly I'm not sure anyone but me ever got the joke, but still.

If it was the other way around I'd think it was a Baldur's Gate reference. One of the companions in the Enhanced Edition is a monk and when you first meet him he's being confronted by a guy who says "Oi, what are you? Some sorta kickpuncher?" Ever since then my husband and I jokingly refer to any sort of martial artist as 'kickpunchers'.

I'm not bothered by seeing non-English names (or chat) on ESO. Especially not the French ones, I *love* the French language (J'adore le français). :) The mix of languages just makes the game more interesting.
