So, where's the choice in this game?

So ignore them. You don't need to read or respond to everyone.

From my experience, if you complete everything in a zone, you pretty much out-level the content in the next zone.

So you definitely have the opportunity to pick, chose and vary your activities.

And how does any of that make it not fun to play? No, seriously, why doesn't being a special snowflake mean you don't like playing the game?
Because it is an MMORPG...if you look like everyone else, what is the point of the RPG part? Might as well be Mechwarrior online with dwarfs.

Thats actually not fair to MWO...since MWO actually has a lot more customization.

The reason is this: if you have a major water main that has blown and is flooding the streets, the first thing you do is shut off the water to stop the flood. Then, after the flood has been stopped, you figure out what repairs need to be done to the water system to fix it so that it works properly and doesn't sprout a flood again.

I disagree with your analogy. Having a few players level fast is not the same as having mass damage. It's just a few players leveling fast.

It's like the devs built a Ferrari and were appalled at how fast some people were driving it and so tore out its engine and replaced it with a lawnmower engine saying "well, that will fix the speed problem!"

Yes, it did, but it's overkill.

We need balance, not overkill. I want XP from dungeons. I'm not trying to outlevel everyone. I want to see progress and I don't want to waste my time - dungeons below level 50 might produce good loot, but who cares? All that loot is soon to become obsolete as you level. Loot only matters once you get to max level - dungeons below max level need to supply a fair, balanced amount of XP.
War, give me war, give me war.

I agree. With my main character I will do all the quests I come over and listen to the dialogue and have fun and all that. But I have an alt for enchanting and I don't want to do all the quests again because that is just boring. I wish there was another way to level.

I am outraged that I can't ride my horse up every possible mountain peak then jump from there. That was the main feature in Skyrim wasn't it?

After almost 9 years, i am still totally obsessed with leveling a character in World of Warcraft, why? Because its easy accessible, sometimes i do pvp, most of the time dungeons and also some questing, everything offers me a decent amount of experience, i have the choice, its uncomplicated and doesn't feel like work (e.g. quest windows vs. clicking through dialogues endlessly)

Please Zenimax, offer some more choice! :)

Thanks for taking the time to read this, i am looking forward to some interesting replies.

On my first character in wow I completed every single quest. For the second, third, forth and so on character I found it rather refreshing not to worry about completing everything and just moving on through areas in random ways doing those quests that are on the way.
In the end I most enjoyed leveling a character only in instances from level 15 up because that group play was so fun.

Still my experience with Elder Scrolls Online was like the first time I played wow.
I found it so refreshing to do every quest because the storys are actually fun and interesting. In wow I stopped reading trough all those walls of text in ESO I took the time to read through it all and because of that the whole experience became more meaningful.

It turned out I now had an unexpected problem when I entered the level 35-40 zones most quests now were actually grey to me because I seemed to be mostly 6 to 7 levels ahead of all the quests in the area.
This yielded quite another problem though:

Grey enemies do not drop much loot which made it difficult to level crafting, especially enchanting. And some boss encounters became more difficult than expected because there was no way to build up ultimate on grey mobs...

So where is the choice? Well either you enjoy an online role playing game that tells stories in quests or you do not. As others wrote maybe after some patches expansions leveling up will also become quicker meaning you will have more choice how you do it.

Speaking of that the one huge disappointment is the dungeon search tool. I would have enjoyed doing repeated dungeon runs. But how can you do that if the dungeons are not anymore available in search just one or two levels above the suggested one?
This became most uncomfortable at level 50. I wanted to wait until I hit V1 before I do the level 48-49 dungeon and guess what? As soon as I hit V1 the dungeon was not available in search. o.O

On your alt you can level with crafting, exploration, skyshards (that give you SP)
Don't play it like a chain of quests

The mistake in this game was having levels at all. They should have just made it all skill levels instead of total levels. Most players are too shallow though and have to have that little carrot of total levels like it means something.

Unfortunately you are right on both accounts, for me anyways. But people would have freaked

This is a big deal for me too.

I like to have a lot of control over how I create my character so I can be unique to my own tastes. On games like WoW I feel like I'm just some cog doing the game's bidding. Where as on this game I have a lot more freedom to design my character as I want. Makes the game more fun.

Not really I played Ultima Online. they didn't have levels in that game and people were fine with it.

I just wish in this game after you get one character to v10 you could at least skip the Vet ranks of lvling on your alts. Cause honestly its so slow in the vet ranks. I know some like the thought of doing quests for the other factions on your main characters without having to switch factions. I'm fine with it for the first character (don't enjoy it really but im fine with having to do it the first time. cause you get no decent xp from actually killing mobs its all quest grind to get the xp)

I chose my faction for a reason. I don't want to have to lvl up through enemy quests. playing the role of them.
Basically I hit 50 through my own faction an you tell me no to get to max you now have to lvl up 2 more times by doing everything you did in your faction in the other two factions but you don't get the same rewards (stat pts per lvl/rank) and its 5x at least (mobs give horrible xp. you go from 450+ xp for some mobs in your 40s to hitting vet ranks and getting 42 xp(vet points) per mob? wtf?

I like playing my alts. however I don't know if I really want to go through the vet grind with anymore. im only v4 and I have to take breaks to play other chars cause of the grind or I just log an try to come back the next day.

I like pvp but you don't get decent xp for it. I want max lvl so I can play and contend with people in pvp. but the quest grind to get there is horrible. 1-50 I liked, im perfectly fine with it. I wish pvp gave more xp so I could do that more often but im fine with the 1-50 leveling. Vet ranks are another matter. the're boring, I don't care about the other factions or I would have went with one of them in the first place.

But like the original poster said where is my choice in this game? I choose to play by doing some quests, doing some pvp, working my professions, but I only get decent xp from questing (vet ranks) which means I have 1 way to play the game after you reach level 50.(in order to level half way decently)

I was at launch day in WOW and I feel this game is much better than WOW was at launch. For me anyway.

Its getting close to 9 years. How we feeling now?

I have gotten to this point several times over the years with this game. I was grinding and running vet this or that and then thought there was nothing else to do so quit for a while. Came back, started a new DK tank and gave him absolutely no help from my main not even extra CP points and exclusively ran him in group dungeons to level him for the most part with the exception of having to grind some of the quests I'd already ran previously on my original toon for certain skills. Got bored and quit again. Came back a while later and started a new templar with the goal of exploring every nook and cranny of each zone, doing every quest in each zone and taking my time in each zone to make sure I'd sucked the life out of said zone and then move to a new one. Did that and then got bored and quit again lol and then came back and started PVPing with a new night blade I levelled up to fifty during a festival by completing gold enchanting writs within a few hours and that's where I'm at now but feel the boredom coming on again. Trials take too long for my allowed playtime so those are out, not sure what comes next if anything at all.

FYI this topic is from 2014.

If anyone is confused by the discussion that's why, all 4 pages are about the game as it was at launch, it's very different now.

Considering the person you're asking hasn't been on the forum since 2017 and hasn't posted since 2014 I think it's safe to assume you're not going to get an answer, and probably also safe to assume they didn't like the game enough to stick around.

    Greetings,

We have closed this topic as it was originally created in April 2014. In many cases, it's better to create a new thread on a topic that you want to discuss as opposed to bumping one that is rather old.

    Thank you for your understanding.
