Until they provide Brynjolf from Skyrim I'm not interested in romance in the game ;). I don't have a single companion yet either.

I can see the game having that scope for many though.

I don't see it working. The ESO world is just too uptight about even the most basic hints of anything not Disney children's grade within the game. The Skyrim modding community has been free to work on and develop that angle of the game free from obsessions about never offending anyone so have been able to take their stories in more meaningful directions, and one or two "not for me" ones.

Skyrim is also different in that all the game characters are far more intelligent and have their own lives. Their 2014 era "AI" is actually quite competent today and remarkable for the time.

The ESO companions are basically mobs with dialogue. The dialogue isn't structured and most of it doesn't evolve over time but is randomly tied to events with no state or recalls. It's not a criticism but an MMO issue in many ways - the state needed to make a character evolve isn't huge but you'd have to store it for several million characters and you have to run the "AI" for it for all the in-game players. Scaling is fun.

Why do some people read romance novels? Or watch romantic movies? Also, I had the impression that NPC romances in rpgs were quite popular for many years now. I, personally, have no interest in media that only focusses on romance (much too cheesy for me), but it is a reasonable addition to roleplay. People have relationships after all. And if you don't want or need it - no one is forcing you to, either.

Yeah, I'd love some sort of choice of friendship or romance with the companions, if only for the dialogue. Ember and my toon, Jennifur Clawrence, are in a relationship in my head canon.

Romance dialogue and quests would make our companions a lot more interesting, and it would enrich the ESO world we currently play in. I vote yes.

Well, we don't particularly need or expect "adult" romance, and I think ESO has shown itself quite capable of portraying touching romantic relationships in some of the minor quests that you encounter in Tamriel. I don't see a problem whatsoever.

Even if we resurrect thereafter, we die - sometimes a lot. And I'd rather die with my lover by my side than alone (it's romantic, you know :p ).

I don't know if I'd call the efforts of the Skyrim modding community 'more meaningful' as Skyrim modders tend to excel mostly in the art of creating bimbos to wear chainmail thongs. The few mods that have tackled romance have either been poorly written or mainly made to facilitate less savory mods.

There is romance with npcs in one other microsoft's MMO already, btw. In Fallout 76 you can build relationships with two characters, pre-war astronaut Daguerre and what's his name, some wastelander con man. Can't say it's perfect, definitely not Shepard-Garrus level. But it works, brings some coziness to the post-apocalypse. Romance doesn't add any extra gameplay or cutscenes or some such. Just extra dialogue as you progress through their stories, just you know, learning more about the NPC you like, and more about *your* character, too.
Do you think Mirri's jealous? I bet she is. Gotta go, promised her we'd fry some scrib tonight. So romantic!

I have a feeling there will never be romanceable companions because of how much time they'd have to spend coding it. I don't care about having romanceable companions, personally, but I know some people would like them.

Its normal in many rpgs and has been for years. No one is replacing real life with romantic stories, it's just something some people like in their game.

I can't imagine it would be convincing/immersive enough without some kind of AI, which could never happen in an MMO.

Why not? Romance in Baldur's Gate has been done without some complex server park feeding it behavioural data and it really feels (if you don't look up the answers), like you're navigating the likes and dislikes of the character. Of course it helps it's implemented like a quest, with seemlingly random triggers.

Even so, AI should never be a point against implementation in the gaming world. NPC's are ALL AI. It's the bread and butter of a game.

Sotha forever alone. Liar, traitor. But so wise... Contrasts.

Of course we all have our own theories about what exactly happened at Red Mountain and why, but Sil doesn't seem like a powerhungry type to me (in contrast to Almalexia - and Vivec seems ambiguous at least). Quite the opposite, actually; he is no one who cares for adoration or worldly power, he spends his time alone and focuses on scientific issues. So I can imagine that he just went along with Vivec and Almalexia because he saw it as neccessary. As a sacrifice that has to be made. He is feeling regret, he mourns Nerevar, he suffers. And he knows very well how it all will end. It's obvious from his lines in CWC and especially from the dialogue at the end. One of the most tragic stories, I feel, and to me, also the best characterization in whole ESO. But it's no surprise when basically the whole DLC is about him, with hints on his story and his emotions everywhere. The Mnemonic Planisphere echoing memories from his past, the female Factotums sometimes malfunctioning and ejecting strange short descriptions that seem to be memories from Sil's dead sister (as he fused her mind with the system). It's a tragic fate, really. But probably some people consider him whiny too because he has emotions ;)

I think it's okay to be "emo" if you lose your whole family in your youth because your home town is eradicated by Daedra (Sil was the only survivor) and later have to kill one of your closest friends for the greater good.

Of course we know what's happened. Just Google "ESO Foul Merder". Plus you can explore CC for more clues. Yes. Only Sil regrets. But regret can't change the past. Not to mention his foresight and knowledge about everything. He can see when he'll die and all future possibilities. So, his loneliness understandable. I love and despise this character since TES3. But this thread not about him or traitorous Tribunal members. I was joking about Sotha and Verandis as love interest for my hero. Dramatic characters simp here.

I’m for romanceable companions. Bastian has always been extremely popular with male and female games of several sexualities.

I don’t empathise with people who find gaming romances anathema to them lol; there’s nothing morally objectionable about a few lines of dialogue and maybe a quest. Otome games alone are popular with female games breaching out from mobile to the Nintendo switch. Take BioWare romances or even Skyrim marriages and people do actually play them.

It’s up to your discretion anyways. People can ignore a flirty Bastian.
