Pros & cons of a nb tank? And how is compared to other classes in terms of self healing/resources management?

I built a nb tank and I'm very happy with it. No unique group benefits, but does what it does fairly reliably. Also quite fulfilling on those occasions when you can tell your pug immediately presumes you're a faketank DPS because you're a NB and then you boss the whole thing with very little healing required outside of self-heals.

Most of the NB qualities for tanking come from damage mitigation rather than resistance or healing-through.

Be aware that mitigation is being heavily nerfed in U34 and it's unclear whether mitigation tank builds will actually be viable at all in just a few week's time.

Obviously, the surplus of NB tanks running around needed to be addressed....

I missed this nerf in the patch notes, what will they change?

I've done every single dungeon trifecta, Unchained, and five trial trifectas (TTT/IR/GH/GS/DB) on my main character, which happens to be a Breton NB tank. For example, here's the Coral Aerie trifecta.

Is it a "meta" tank class? No (it was briefly during Elsweyr), but that doesn't mean it can't do what other tank classes can do.

It has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, after tanking Coral on multiple classes, I found NB to be the easiest because NB's biggest strength is its self-HoT, and that happens to match up pretty well with the incoming damage patterns in that dungeon, which tend to be more sustained damage than burst damage. After tanking Kyne's HM on multiple classes, I'd say that NB is on the harder side, as it lacks the special block mitigation of DK or Sorc and lacks the easy-mode stam sustain for execute of a DK. But it's still doable, as I have two Dawnbringers on NBs. NB is probably the easiest main tank class for Sunspire (due to Major Evasion and the incoming damage there tending more towards sustained than burst). In Cloudrest, NB was harder than other classes during the upstairs phases, but felt easier during the downstairs phases, compared to other classes (except Warden, since Warden hands-down beats every other class for Cloudrest).

The short of it is that some things will be harder on NB, and some things will be easier. But it's totally viable, even if not optimal.

obviously, between normal FG1 and normal trial located vet dungeons. It's sad that I have to specify such things )

NB tank is absolutely okish for:
normal dungeons
vet dungeons (including DLC) + any hm, no death, whatever
normal trials, including PUG trials
base game vet trials
DLC vet trials (base difficulty) preferably with premade team

Also, shame that this is one of a myriad of posts, where OP didn't state for what content his qustion is, so we have to guess. Maybe it's even PVP lol kekw.

What is PVP?

The content I want to do with a NB tank is Dungeons HM (incl. DLC) and vet trials, the things i normally do with my sorc tank.

You can do all roles with all classes in all content. Some classes just have better tools.

NB tank can make for a good tank-healer hybrid with good mitigation

Pros

-On demand minor resolve with major evasion on mirage

-On demand major resolve when casting refreshing path or dark cloak from passive (both are healing skills)

-Burst heal with mallevolent offering and minor reparation if using healthy offering

-Powerfull healing ult with soul syphon able to burst heal you back to full without even building for it thanks to a big initial heal and a follow up massive yet short HoT coupled with major vitality during the entire duration

-Can reach absurd level max hp if build for it (some record where around 80k-90k HP) though its more of a meme build

-On demand AOE minor vulnerability through Lotus fan gap closer

Cons

-Sustain skill require you to wait 20s to regain 4k stam

-Tank ult (Consummign darkness) is objectively dead useless in any possible scenario and should be replaced by slotting revealing flare instead which give the same bonus permanently and passively

-Malevolent offering negate some healing by draining health

-No acces to ANY kind of group utility outside of sets

It's the damage mitigation CP stars. Mitigation from all damage sources will be reduced. I think it's down to 6% total mitigation from 10% or something.

I know nothing about NB tanks or the NB class really. I mainly play templars. But I do recall a time where NB tank was considered a must for vet trials (I think VSS in particular). But not sure that is still the case.

I remember far more ancient times, when their Consuming Darkness ult and Templar's Nova had to be hugged like a religion to survive certain mechanics in Aetherium Archive and Hel Ra. Both granted 30% damage reduction back then, I think. Stone Atronach stomps without one of these ults up? Group Wipe.

That was when class skills and identity truly meant something.

Finally, a topic that seems custom-built for me!

NB tanks are okay. Highly underrated, not even close to top tier, but they have their niches, and are significantly better than most expect.

-NBs have some of the best if not the best raw power to stuff into a recovery build (which still isn't competitive at the highest levels, topping out at harder vet dungeons). But they make for super laid-back play on any non-vet content (and some entertaining PVP).

-Dark cloak is still a super solid skill, and while it's effectively required for a NB tank (meaning no invisibility, sadly), that single ability and just a few others is easily enough to get all the main buffs tanks want, which means you have a lot of options for what to do with the rest of your build.

-But also there aren't many great NB abilities for tanking, at least not that are even close to the same level as what the other classes have. So all those open slots you can do whatever with? There's not as much to do with them. So keep in mind skills that are available to all classes when tanking on a NB, namely the psijic and fighter's guild skill lines, for utility.

-There are some unique options with hybrid builds that a NB has some good tools for, like healer off-tanks, but those options are currently (and have usually been, over ESO's history) both difficult to make effective, and limited time, as every balance change seems to disrupt these.

-Strong defensive options are significantly lacking for NBs. They don't have a lot of support for damage shields, for example, compared to other classes. There used to be a good path for sap tanks, or tanks that deal good damage as well as tanking, but those have either been nerfed to be ineffective or are lackluster compared to what other classes have.

-I've heard good things about werewolf NB tanks, though I cannot vouch for that myself. I can imagine there might be some difficulty with taunt management as a werewolf, but again, I've heard good things.

-It's always fun to watch people stick their foot in their mouths when they make fun of you being a NB tank just to see that you're carrying them later in the dungeon, if just on virtue of tanks being solid as a whole right now.

Anyway, that's what I've got for NB tank pros and cons right now, that I think cover the main stuff.
