Why do people hate argonians?

If they can be mean towards a virtual race, they would also be mean toward RL race.

That's faulty logic, and a risky and unfair assumption. Most functional adults can understand the difference between fantasy and reality.

I mean this with nothing but respect: I don't think its cool to go on and on about stuff, or if its clear that for whatever reason its harrassy or upsetting, it needs to stop. But its not good form to conflate these two things.

Well, the argument was basically some people can not be racist towards real people in real world because they would have to suffer consequence of their actions in RL.
In a Fantasy world however, you do not have any consequences. That is why I think some people behave like this & spread hate, disguised as "only RP". If they would state that they are joking & RP-ing - that would be fine. But they don't.

Also, as I stated before, even if some one is racist towards virtual race, in a virtual world, that does not exist in RL - people who play that race and like that race exist in RL. So be being mean towards something like a fictional race - you are automatically mean toward people who for whatever reason have chosen said race and identify with their in-game avatar.

Well, you aren't actually your character. Its good to experience empathy with a character in a story, and try to imagine how they might feel. But I think its a liability to your own self to extend reasons to be offended so broadly that it encompasses imaginary characters. People aren't necessarily attacking your choices, but having a joke about a race that someone else created.

Zone chat can be a cesspit, I agree. There are people who like to cause drama and make people feel like crap. But the flipside is some people are just engaging the lore and having a joke. Personally, I'd tend to just assume that's the case, find the humour in it and have a laugh myself, and never care too much about what others are saying. If someone is being RL racist, they should be reported and hopefully tossed out of the game. The rest is just imaginary, and shouldn't hurt anyone. Just a different perspective, and I'll drop it here.

That's true of course, we are not our characters, but I believe there are some people who can really identify with their characters or feel somehow connected to them. I do it. Not only in a game like ESO, but also with characters from pen-and-paper rpg or characters in stories that I write. You deal with them so intensely in your imagination that at some point they are more than a collection of pixels or written words. Maybe that sounds a bit weird.

I don't identify with my characters as much as my characters identify with me. They represent me so they need to have certain characteristics to fulfill that role. Lizards and cats don't do it.

I'm so tired of seeing the oh so funny "Hippity hoppity argonians are property", so I always respond with other rhymes. Like: Hippity hoppity dunmers have delusions of grandiosity.
Or the less mean one: Hippity hoppity dunmers are crotchety.
Or the meaner: Hippity hoppity dunmers are an atrocity.

It usually makes people start to make rhymes about all manner of silly things instead. Which is always better.

I'm the same way. Although not all of my characters identify with me, my main ones do. Two are khajiit and one is argonian. The ways they identify with me though aren't physical (except gender, needs to match mine).

My characters identify with me through personality like demeanor, life goals, past failures and victories, and other stuff like that. Despite them being khajiit and argonian and not physically looking like me, I still feel deeply connected to them.

I'm saying their personalities come from mine. My characters don't have animal personalities that I connect with. They take parts of mine, so I can identify with them. I think you mean you can't put your personality/traits onto something that looks like what khajiit and argonians do. That's what I got out of your original comment.

I said in response to the original thing I quoted that I'm the same way (my traits go to my characters, not the other way around), just not in terms of physical traits other than gender expression.

Humans are mammals. They also have a much more advanced intelligence than either lizards or cats.

If you identify with Khajiit and Argonians, that is fine for you. I don't and I never will.

The show "V" during my adolescent years 😉

What a great call! 7 years old for me, and led directly to the only time in my life I've been afraid of the dark. I remember how long that lasted too (3 - 4 months).

I was pretty embarrassed when, 25 years later, I watched the guinea pig scene on youtube and saw how bad the sfx were.

That is not what I was saying at all. The way they look is only part of it. As I also said, I can't connect with their personalities and demeanors either.

This thread is asking why people hate Argonians. I don't hate them but I would never play one for the reasons I stated.

My favorite race is Dunmer, but I love argonians, the way the speak, their culture everything, my mains house is former redoran current hlaalu and abhors slavery and (at least in my mind) helps any slave she comes across. My favorite thing abiut them is how they say their emotion since their faces cant be read like men/mer. Like "I erect the spine of happiness" instead of smiling since they can't really smile in a way we could "read"

I don't see the hate. I love Argonians because they are the alien, bestial race and misunderstood. I've always been drawn to the "freak" races of fantasy, and rarely to the "normal" human and elvish races.

The Sun-In-Shadow quests in VVardenfell are great as you help an Argonian viewed with disdain by Dunmer work to break the barriers in Telvanni culture and achieve her dreams to become a respected wizard. It shows how cunning an Argonian can be, definitely not a race to be underestimated.

I learned that their biggest stigma was their resemblance to dragons but claiming to be a direct result of the Hist tree, so right there, they make the Nords quite queasy. I think that this makes all the rest of Tamriel (or maybe just me lol) suspect them of withholding actual information on the connection (if there is one).

I'd say not. I don't hate either Argonians or Orcs, but they're my least favorite races through all the games where they've been playable as characters.

I would guess the OP added the link to that thread because the least favorite race by percentage is definitely Argonians according to the poll numbers..

Well I would never make an human alt in ESO, I don't hate humans as it is but they are boring.

The boring part I agree with. No offense but mostly Khajiit and maybe argonian are the only races I play. Already played elves and especially humans in real life and other games since forever.

The beast races are just so unique, and being animals is bonus points. Claws anyone?

I don't like argonians because they are reptiles and i find reptiles repulsive in real life.

What if there was a race of Spider-people, with 8 legs and spider bodies? Do you really think they would be super popular among human players? No way.

Argonians are revolting, a xenomorph looks more inviting than they do. I think they are an unfortunate design for a humanoid race in my opinion when there are an endless number of creative non-human races that could have been conceived of far more attractive than lizard-people.

I'm not religious but it's been ingrained in culture for millennia about snakes, and lizards are in the same taxonomic class as snakes. Speaking personally, reptiles frequently live in habitats that I dislike strongly. Especially swamps. I vehemently hate typical swamps because I hate all the environmental variables that make up a typical swamp. Warm to hot, moist to an extreme where the colloquialism "sticky" applies, incredibly supportive of an overabundance of insect life, as well as a lot of gases that don't smell good, such as methane. Filthy because it's difficult not to be covered in mud when traversing, and just a general feeling of limited freedom: you're unable to move very fast, like those bad dreams where you're unable to get away from something.

It's definitely an irrational pet peeve, this thing about swamps and swampiness. I can tell because I even hate movies when there are swamps in them. A lot of scenes from the Waterboy are set in a swamp, and they do the polar opposite of putting me in a good, laughing mood. I didn't even like The Jerk, and the only thing swamp-related was his quick little joke of an origin story.

I regret this reaction, as swamps are some of the best hotbeds (pun is pretty much literal) for life and the increase of its variety, which normally I would be all for. But it is what it is, and I'll always see argonians as stiflingly moist scuzzy stinkpots walking around with white cloaca stains drying on their skin in streams down the insides of their legs.
