Tbh. Even as a PC player I am scared. When big companies find themselves in a monopolistic position, they abuse it... like they very abuse it.... And this is without a doubt one of those moments when MS will be kinda in that position.

I mean my experience so far with MS games is... disappointing & less than ideal. I have this new MS Flight Sim and it is installed through MS app store... Worst way to install & play the game. No joke.

If the only way to play some MS / Bethesda / Zenimax games in the future will be to install them through that weird app store... You can not even see where the install directory is, nor set it yourself... and all game files are hidden from you...

But how are other bought-studio games being sold? Sea of Thieves is on Steam now, Obisidian's next game Grounded is coming out on Steam, MS Flight Sim is on Steam, Halo Infinite is listed as "coming soon" there, etc.

Doesn't seem like they're going to be limiting their PC games to just the Windows Store. (Now, if people want to get them on Game Pass, or do the whole "can play it on PC or XBox" thing, then I think it would be a Windows Store thing?)

You can even get some Microsoft games on other consoles. Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps are on Switch and The Outer Worlds is on Switch and PS4 (although that was released a year after Obsidian was bought by Microsoft, so maybe they already had contracts to release it on different platforms). I'm sure there's other examples too but I can't find a complete list anywhere and I'm not going to spend ages researching individual games.

Minecraft is on everything, and I almost mean that literally. Not just PC, Xbox, PS4, it's on the Switch and 3DS, iPhones, Android phones, Amazon's Fire TV, Apple TV...I'm mildly surprised there isn't an Alexa version like that text adventure version of Skyrim.

If I was in the OP's position I'd carry on playing ESO on PS4 and expect to get any future TES games on PC. I doubt they'll stop the PS version of ESO any time soon since that would lose them a lot of money (ZOS have claimed the player base is roughly equal between platforms, so they'd lose 1/3 of their players) and cause a huge publicity backlash, for no real benefit.

Probably nothing, I can't see them pulling the PS servers down, but if there is ever a sequel to eso, then it might well be xbox only. Time will tell but its definitely looking like xbox is the console to get if you like bethesda's games.

What they said: all current titles that are available on other consoles than the Xbox and PC will still get updates etc. But all of the upcoming new games (e.g. new Fallout, Elder Scrolls titles, Starfield etc.) will be exclusive to Xbox and PC (and everywhere where Gamepass is).

ESO won’t be affected as it’s a cross-console game already and will be supported as such.

I‘m pretty sure Microsoft will allow Zenimax to provide / port games on the Nintendo Switch as they’ve done in the past, but Sony / PlayStation won’t get any new Zenimax games in the futures - which makes sense after a $7.5 billion acquisition.

No, all they've said so far is that games currently being developed/contracted for PS5 will still come out there, and "exclusivity would be decided on a case-by-case basis" for future games.

It‘s most likely as definitive as it gets. During the roundtable some days ago Phil Spencer was quite clear about exclusivity. Or maybe better, he said it in a roundabout way, leaving a little door open for exceptions. But it’s definite that all Zenimax games are best on PC / Xbox (whatever that means).

PS5 consoles are currently selling at a rate nearly twice that of Xbox Series X. Nintendo Switch is outselling both of them. In what world would a company sell only to the smallest of install bases and not expect to answer to angry shareholders about missed opportunities and poor sales?

Ideas of exclusivity of major games on Xbox are ridiculous. They currently have 3 tent pole unique titles: Forza, Gears, and Halo.

If you want a litmus test wait till Halo comes out this year. If Halo can’t drive significant console sales then exclusivity is dead.

This isn’t possible as PS5 is hardly available worldwide, so don’t make up numbers just to prove your point.

And it’s Xbox and PC which is important. If you’re having a gaming PC, you’d most likely don’t buy the game for the Xbox at all. If you don’t have a gaming PC and just a Playstation, it’s more likely that you buy an Xbox for the exclusives instead of a gaming PC which would cost twice the amount of a Series S / X.

The numbers are already out there. Both consoles are selling around the world but Xbox as expected is anemic in Japan. And as for Xbox + PC if you're selling mainly to the PC crowd (now split because of Mac's ditching of Intel) you're taking major hits on console manufacturing which is already being sold at a loss (unless you're Nintendo).

And we are coming out of COVID and finances are tight for many many people. Owning both a gaming PC and a second console that isn't cheap is a real issue. People will make rational choices. The PC crowd will stay with PC. But many gamers are already switching over to PS5. Some early adopters may have gotten both but if trends repeat themselves you'll see those Xbox sales seriously lag behind again.

My advice would be to calm down. ESO on PS will continue to get all the same content and in 3 years when ES6 finally comes out just buy it on gaming PC. PC still has superior graphics/framerates compared to PS5 or XboxX if you've got a new GPU plus you can use all the mods you want.

Who is switching to the PS5 when it’s not available?

And again, that’s exactly why Microsoft bought Zenimax. Exclusives will drive their sales, one way or another. PS4 was so successful because of exclusives, not because it was the better console (the One had a horrible launch, I give you that). Horizon, Last of Us, Spider Man, God of War, all those 10 million sellers contributed to the success plus the ton of smaller exclusives like Days Gone, Bloodborne, Persona 5 etc. Gamepass is Microsoft‘s focus and with exclusives from Zenimax (Elder Scrolls is the bestselling RPG franchise in the world, Doom is highly successful in the shooter genre as well) they will exactly do what they did not during the One: deliver great exclusives which drive console or Gamepass sales.

I mean, I’m eventually getting a PS5, but just for the exclusives. I haven’t touched my PS4 Pro except for the exclusives, because the One X was just the better console - and the Series X is exactly that, an overall better console than the PS5, but unfortunately lacking exclusives to drive sales.

I'd say it depends on how far you are into ESO. Do you still have alot to do? How much do you enjoy the game?

If starting over isn't too bad and you want to start a new class etc then I'd go PC for the add-ons alone. Controller players perform just as well as keyboard so there's no disadvantages there too unlike FPS games.

The Series X isn’t available either (granted, it’s overall more available, but still sold out everywhere). I mean the difference in sales is still 50%, which is a lot, but as I said, Microsoft specifically bought Zenimax for the long term and not to boost initial sales. Due to the lack of exclusives it’s no wonder that the Series is lacking in sales whereas the PS5 has all the exclusives from the previous gen plus Demon‘s Souls and Miles Morales. As soon as Xbox has Fable, Halo, Starfield etc. available, I’m optimistic that they’ll catch up (in 2-3 years).

Right now I wouldn’t worry too much, the new console generation is barely active with the lack of games and I do not think 2021 will change in that regard at all, for neither of the two consoles.

Sure, "some". As in "Some people are experiencing login problems" when there is a complete server meltdown. By now we should be aware that in corporate speak words don't necessarily mean what we commonly assume as their meaning. I wouldn't bet on anything if I owned a PS.

    That was fast.

Of course if you are looking for a FPS update on an existing title on the ps5, I would just stop looking. The sales of ps5 is not really a factor, Xbox/Bethesda is going to do whatever they want to make xboxes look like the better gaming console.

I would be surprised if they ever optimize the ps5 versions. I am sure they worked on optimizing some of the titles, but my guess is that they will be permanently shelving any ps5 FPS increases for any of the PS4’s older titles such as F4 or Dishonored.

Isn’t the FPS increase due to special Xbox technology? That’s what I get from that article. So unless Sony isn’t having a similar technology, it makes sense that the Xbox versions get optimized.

That's just good PR. They've gotten their approval for the Bethesda purchase, and they're making a big deal about the games being available on Game Pass. Of course they'd shove those games to the head of the "optimize these NOW!" line.

I am not aware of any new tech that is unique to Xbox, ps5 games have been getting FPS increases too. I think it’s just something the clients developers need to do.

You have to be fair about this.

    - ESO should be played on the PC
    - If MS is acquiring ZOS then it's only natural they will favor the XBOX

Sony does their thing, so does MS. Just how it is.

Yes, start over on PC... it’s worth it in the long run.
I still am perplexed why after 7 years, ESO still does not offer account transfers to other platforms or better yet, just be able to login on any platform and play...just read the same databases. Right. It's probably not that simple, but if other games can and are doing it, then why can't a AAA game called ESO do it as well? Sales pitch: ZOS could charge for transfers or an additional fee to be able to cross-login or something.

I digress. It will probably never happen because we want it to.

I mean, it’s said in the first paragraph of your linked article from The Verge:

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass platform just got a huge boost with the addition of 20 new Bethesda Softworks titles starting today, and now a quarter of those games will be getting performance boosts on the next-gen Xbox consoles in an upcoming update. The performance gains are in frame rate thanks to an appropriately named new feature Microsoft revealed last month called FPS Boost, which can roughly double frame rates of older games using new Xbox hardware without requiring developers do any manual work.

Ah, fair enough. I somehow missed that bit.

I'll say this. In years past Zenimax and Bethesda operated within their own little netherealm. Zeni being a private company could do whatever it wanted really and it showed. I remember when they stopped granting press access to certain publications over perceived slights.

    Those days are over.

If I'm a Microsoft shareholder and I learn that a game the company has a hand in is going to be exclusive I want to know why. I want to know why you think exclusivity is better than Multiplatform for my bottom line. I want to know your research behind this logic. In the case of ES6 in a few years, if PS5 is really outselling Xbox (extremely likely as this has been the case for more than 20 years with Sony vs Xbox) why are you ignoring a potential market and increasing our revenue and profits?

Eight billion is a LOT of money. It implies value but it's also an investment and if the returns on that investment are mismanaged then heads will roll and lawsuits will be filed. Eight billion doesn't give you carte blanche to do whatever you want with a company when it's publicly traded.

The notion of console exclusivity only flies if it can increase growth, turns a serious profit, and doesn't shortchange anyone. Nintendo pulls it off because it's titles are extremely popular, so much that people will buy the same game system over and over again just for bundles. I mean Nintendo DS systems with Pokemon, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Mario, etc are sold out every time they're released in Japan. That's power no other gaming company has.

Sony has synergy with its holdings. Its intellectual properties are strong (Uncharted, God of War, Spider-man) and the exclusives it gets from 3rd-party publishers work because Sony not only puts in money but has the customer base to support it. Final Fantasy and Street Fighter are exclusives to Sony now because of their huge Japanese base. Sales of FFXV stomped the living daylights out of Xbox One sales by a factor of 5 to 1 or more. Street Fighter thrives in Japan where Xbox flounders so it gets exclusivity to PS4 and PC with cross play.

Microsoft either pull a rabbit out of its hat and make Xbox a global success this time or else multiplatforming is necessary.

(PS - And yes I know that Sony has even taken the steps into making some of their games Multiplatform like Horizon Zero Dawn to PC. Sony can do that, they have the consumer base and loyalty.)
