1-I am very mindful when creating my characters and their backstories

2-you and I have very different ideas of "better" in terms of how we appreciate this game.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

"Better" is relative to what you want to achieve. I think in an MMO it's important to enable as many people as possible to enjoy the game in a myriad of different ways. If your goal is to complete difficult content or rise to the top of the PvP ranks or get all the achievements on one character, mastering one will be better for you. If your goal is to roleplay 57 combinations of race/class/gender/backstory, or just have a thousand screenshots of your stable of models in various outfits, having one character is not better for this purpose, it's the opposite of what you want.

Those 9000 hours I spent creating, leveling, and playing many, many characters were the total opposite of mindless. Having more slots available for me to fulfil my enjoyment doesn't take away from you having your enjoyment.

I can only talk from experience, mastering one character feels way more satisfying to me than having an excessive amount of characters but each to their own.

If you need more than 18 characters you have serious problems

    This ^^

I think if people realised that it’s better to master a single or a couple of characters instead of mindlessly creating loads of characters they would enjoy the game more.

Why move to insults? You can't think of reasons people might get value from many characters? You can't imagine that people like having different builds ready to go?

Do you have to insult people to make a point? Do you always think that people who do thing differently than you just haven't "realized" that your way is "better"?

That being said, I think having many character slots can be a distraction for some that does make the game less enjoyable. I greatly enjoyed running dungeons with different classes and builds while leveling alts. Learning to tank, dps, and heal with all 6 classes isn't mindless. Now that I have 18 max level characters, they really don't add value for me an I generally stick with my main and then my fast runner when I need to collect things.

Imho, we should be able to have more than 18 characters. Some players enjoy the leveling experience and like diversity. Why limit their fun? If they want a platoon of characters, it's fine with me. Let them enjoy it.

Those who don't want it don't have to unlock the character slots, and those who do want it can enjoy playing extra characters. win win :)

If Zos says no more character slots are coming, it must mean that the great majority of the player base is just fine with the current limit.

So, from that we can deduce that the people who want “moar Moar MOAR” are so few in number that their desire for “MOAR SLOTS” can be safely ignored.

    Safely ignored.

    The logic isn’t hard.

    @Cryptical

I strongly disagree and this is supported by fairly substantial proof here.

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/493216/how-many-characters-do-you-have/p1

And even without pretty substantive proof, the claims made by ZOS regarding why no further characters slots are currently available, have nothing to do with the player bases wishes, instead they claim it would affect performance. IT/networking wise, that claim is highly questionable and/or easily resolvable.

Players have already set the precedent for secondary accounts. You can find people here who have 3 or 4 with plans to get another. Dont ask me why. But the fact that some are willing to open additional accounts makes it highly un-likely that you will get additional slots. (Slightly more likely than world peace spontaneously erupting, only slightly)

Furthermore, what about those weirdos who have multiple accounts? Are they hosed, or some kinda account merger? You think zos will accommodate your wants over the customers have paid for a work around?

And yes it is a want not a need.

Its a "want" that multiple other MMOs seem to accommodate with consummate ease. Funny that.

Irrelevant. People have shown a willingness to buy more accounts, do you really think Zos of all companies is going to cut off revenue?
the provision of this "want", it is not possible to experience the game that Zos have produced, in terms of the division of magica and stamina characters, and the roles, healer, tank, dps, and pvp. I am unsure why some people think it is acceptable to literally only be able to fully and efficiently enjoy 50% of what is on offer (and even then only after paying).

So I would say it isnt a want, its a need, in order to fully experience the game that Zos has produced.

It is possible to experience the whole game with a single character. Now if you want to explore every little faucet, every possible permutation, then yes you are going to need a few more. Of course now we get fully into the semantics of the argument.

Setting that aside, how will people get compensated? Paid cash for that second account, have to give em something. Crowns, free ESO+, what have you.
And, for the sake of argument, someone with full banks on those account. Bank expansion? Zos has already shut that one down. And that is one singular issue.

Players found a work around. Is it good? Hell no. Is it likely to change? *Looks at recent decisions* Actions kinda speak for themselves.

    @Thechuckage

Personally, I think that highlighting where other MMO genre games provide more character slot availability than ESO (in some cases significantly more), is relevant in the face of claims that ZOS cannot provide additional character slots for ESO. I do not feel the excuses provided are acceptable (based on information currently available) for one of the largest, most successful and profitable MMOs on the market. Obviously we are all entitled to our own opinions on the matter.

Surely the question is not IF ZOS will make such an improvement, the question as I understand it from the thread, its more about the fact players need additional character slots and why etc and discussing this.

This is a similar sphere of discussion that often arises when people post ideas or suggestions for improvements or new features - but I just dont see it as particularly relevant or constructive to say "nah Zos will never do that, so no to this idea".

Id also question the claim that it is possible to experience, more or less, every facet of ESO with a single character. Particularly given the time and effort required for farming and the wide variety of different gear needed for each role, and particularly given the astronomical differences between stamina/magica builds and even more than this, between pvp/pve builds/requirements. CAN it be done? Technically yes I agree it CAN be done... but on any realistic level, no, its simply not practical.

Quite apart from these glaring realities... do you know how many skill points are required to unlock EVERYTHING? I seem to recall that there are almost 500 skill points available in game (although a preposterous amount of gameplay would be required to achieve this) and I believe there are significantly more than 500 things to spend skill points on.

Beyond this, I would argue that claims made about having to provide compensation, are actually incorrect. People have always been able to purchase additional accounts, but the character slots available rose steadily with each new class release, until Necromancer. Was compensation provided to multiple account users? No. This just isnt a thing in this context.

I don't understand why you need so many characters. What you do with all of those?

Personally I only use three characters but have maxed all slots (9) with future other classes that I never use.

They should increase a lot more before character slots but wouldn't mind if they did it - doesn't bother me.

you would think 18 is more than enough, but if you've already used up those slots, and are not keen on deleting a previous one which you worked hard to flesh out, then you can never experience the fun of creating a new character again, unless you buy a new account, which is kind of lame...not keen on that either. so i'd appreciate 2 more character slots, especially with blackwood coming up. hopefully they'll increase it, but i have a feeling that they won't

I would previously thought that 18 was more than enough; I played my main only for about 2 years, then made 3 more. Then another, then a couple of wardens, then another, then a couple of necros, then a few more chars then I’m full. (All max level)

I enjoy creating characters and levelling them up. Would love to create more but would mean deleting one of them and they all have a backstory & I take great care when creating & naming them, so could not bear to do that.

And I also do end game stuff with a lot of them quite successfully!

So more slots would be appreciated.

I love how this particular conversation always ends up. Its truly amazing.

I mean, Team A wants something that has very little affect on Team B and might need a bit more resources from the game but it will add profit to the game as well. Thus this profit can go to building up the game more...

BUT>>>Team B will always be like "why do you want it Team A, like OMG!!"

Its like, I want a red car and and someone goes "OMG, I'm like so happy with a blue one, and you should too" or "Do you know much money they have to spend to make a red car..I mean really?? It just paint i know and they don't have to build a new building or spend a ton of money on it, but I'd rather them spend that money on something "I" want".

A great look into human nature.

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

Yea, If I were in this situation I wouldn't want to buy a new account or create new toons on the "other" server since none of my purchases "houses, mounts, crafting toons, etc" will not be applied to these new toons.

I guess it would be kinda interesting to start at 0 again and see how it goes, but naw I ain't got time for that.

Very good points! I have not used all character slots, but because there are relatively few, I am slow to make a character permanent but think a lot before creating and then after, see if I like the way the feel, whether I’m happy with how their created, etc. I play different characters in different types of content, different roles, etc. plus it just makes the game a lot more fun for me to play with different abilities and styles. I don’t understand why someone would want to class change the one main that they play and they don’t see why I’d want to play more than a dozen different characters. People enjoy the game in different ways. :)

More slots would be great. 18 is better than lower limits we had before, but it's still quite low for certain playstyles.

I think if people realised that it’s better to master a single or a couple of characters instead of mindlessly creating loads of characters they would enjoy the game more.

    Agree.

in world of tanks most people have 100+ tanks.

I am one of the few that for 10 years has only had 4 tanks, 2 Premium Tier 8 and 2 Tier 10, I have managed to specialize in those tanks as very few could, i'm a beast in those tanks, i play so well that most tell me I'm cheating lol.

In ESO the same thing happens, I only play with the sorcerer for normal dungeons, templar healer for veteran dungeons and trials, I have become an expert healer.

    More satisfying.

But if someone wants to have more than 18 characters, why not? I don't see how it can affect me.

I did that to use the NA slots as well. Once you know how to play it's really fast, especially if you pick a double xp event, level your first toon as a crafter/healer or crafter/tank so you can crash dungeons in a tight loop getting the gear sets and up to CP 160.
Too many toons not enough time

I have 12, but I can totally see there being more slots needed once/if a new class is released. I think it's fair to have 3 slots per class - which is 18 now.
