Cheer up! It's actually a secret metagame. Try to figure out a character name that doesn't go against the secret naming conventions.

Art Vandelay, from Vandelay enterprises? I am wondering what other names you had though! :)

Art Vandalay from Sienfeld. Still seems a fine name that should be allowed.

But I'm more than happy for ZMO to block stupid, juvenile names en-masse though.
    I think it's clever.

However, anybody with a name lifted from popular fiction, pop culture, or any published work shouldn't be too surprised when they get nabbed. It IS in the Code of Conduct.

I imagine that Art Vandelay (again, really good name; makes me giggle) falls under one of these two rules:

4.No name that contains or refers to copyrighted characters. E.g. "Harry Potter", "Drizzt Do'Urden", "Mario", "Link" etc.

5.No name that contains or refers to popular characters/names. I believe this mostly refers to any previously copyrighted work now in the public domain. E.g. "Dracula", "United States".

Strange that some names were not blocked at the start.
For example, in first few minutes of early start i took the name which I wanted.
And after thet I decided to check out of curiosity some names.

And I was amazed when i can create character named "Mephala"!!!
So in the end they will make me change it? It will not be a surprise. But I would like to know more precisely.

I guess it depends on game.

I have a character in World of Warcraft named Vaermina. She's never gotten reported and I've gotten compliments on it.

Now had I done that here it'd probably have been nailed. Naming your character after a specific lore character here I'm unsure is even allowed.
I'm so glad they are actually cracking down on stupid and offensive names or names from fiction and popular culture. However, some of these seem beyond silly to ban.

I do like seeing that they're cracking down on some of them, but I agree, there are others that are kinda stupid.

Like that guy I saw running around two days ago named Captain Cocaine.

I to was a victim of this but on the forums. My middle name is Walter I know this is a mediocre at best middle name. But I am also white "very white" so my name of walter whiteboi shouldn't harm anyone. yet I had to change it from that as I received a warning to change it due to hoe it may harm to community.

I really hope you are trolling....whiteboi can be seen are racist...especially the spelling of boi mixed with a skin color.

He could have named himself *** McWhiterson.

I'm actually called that by one of my sister's black friends because I'm so damn pale it looks like I was dipped in a bucket of whitewash.

But any "name lifted from popular fiction, pop culture, or any published work" is literally every name that's not just some random letters strung together. That's a terrible policy.

Prohibiting names that Zenimax wants to reserve and names that are offensive is enough. Anything more is completely arbitrary and impossibly restrictive. No matter what Nintendo believes, they do not own all uses of the name "Mario" and they can't possibly sue Zenimax for a player using it.

And thus starts the threads for the inept that don't wish to follow the terms of service, and more likely never read one (which believe me lazy lawyers plagiarize mostly).

It's all about liability - trademark copyright etc etc etc.

Maybe I should start putting this statement in my signature since its starting to be a theme of poor gaming dev ethic and what has been taught to players due to it.

Has there ever actually been a copyright/trademark suit filed over a player's character name in any game?

Someone should be legally able to use Mario/Ezio/etc as a character name, as it should fall under fair use. There should be no infringement, as there is no attempt to confuse your character with the 'real' Mario, and you (or ZOS) are not making any profit from the use of the name.

He didn't even ask me to have some cheese...

Ive seen worse in my time in MMoRPG's... A duo named Capt Kirk & Mista Spack come to mind...

It is afterall still a fantasy game, so keep your name in the spirit of the game.

"Standing On the Roof With a Rocketlauncher" ... big /facepalm

That whole Art Vadewhatever should have been allowed imho

But Mister Ragnar... you do realise the second you log in your Obama character you "are" gonna get hit again right... A little thought into naming goes a long way to avoid getting a name change forced on you
The statement "if you put enough monkeys behind enough typewriters... sooner or later one will produce the works of Shakespeare" has sadly been proven utterly wrong by the internet...

Can you appeal that? Art Vandelay is perfectly acceptable and a good name grab.

If Art Vandelay is a forced change then over half the characters I've seen should be changed.

They could have done the same thing we'd do back in the CoH days. Players that were reported for inappropriate name were given the name 'GenericHeroxxxx' with the x's being a number.

I don't know about 'shocking' you, but it would definitely have qualified as 'mocking' you. :D

Art Vandelay. i was using him as a temporary mule. How on earth is this name unacceptable? ZOS please respond. I was really fond of that name.

Google the name and you will know why it is not acceptable.

That's the reason why my OC's names are registered and protected trademarks. If someone would have picked or reserved their names I would have enforced a rename on them myself.

    Good job ZO

What exactly are you saying? Are you saying you have trade marked character names or did I misunderstand this.

Marvel Comics tried to sue the devs behind City of Heroes for player generated clones of licensed characters. It later came out that some of the characters had actually been made by investigators working for Marvel's lawyers.

Thing is, it's not just this one guy. Groups like RIAA, MPAA and their ilk are very, very, very trigger happy when it comes to copyright claims. There's even firms that file tons of lawsuits, but don't actually represent the people they say they do.

Then there's also cases like Marvel suing NCsoft over the ability to create characters similar to Marvel trademark characters.

That said, there is a tendency among many players to be a little "unimaginative" when it comes to creating a character. Like they're trying to figure out how many different ways they can spell Gandalf.
