I thought that was pretty self-explanatory, to be honest. Story-driven chapter zones have always been... erm.... about the zone. If they released a new chapter/DLC with just new zone/story, good enough for me. That's what Orsinium was, and it was great.

huh. That's a new one for me.
Im pretty sure the new zone isn't thought of as a feature, it's just the chapter location. It's a new 'thing' but it isn't a major selling point for the entire chapter, I don't think. Especially with how formulaic the new zones have been recently.
When saying a major selling point, people often refer to what that chapter adds aside from the new zone.

That's because marketing. Back when they tried to... ahem... convince the players that chapters were not DLCs, and it was therefore OK for subscriptions to not include chapters (which were clearly DLCs) they pointed to these extra "features" that put them above and beyond what was then zone-based DLCs. Before that, the focus was always on the actual new zone. To my mind, it still is, though if you started playing more recently I could understand having a different view on it.

If you've done any of the game's existing questlines that give you a companion, you'd have noted their attacks barely tickle. When Lyris Titanborn's mighty Axe only does 500 dmg on a mob with a 60k health pool, you'll be standing there for a while if you feel like you don't need to attack them anymore.

And honestly, companions seem like much more work than simply adding a new combat skill line. You could throw that together using unused existing combat animations and shaders and it wouldn't even require voice acting. I have no idea why ZOS is so obstinate in keeping our combat toolkit so comically small.

What matters is where people get value. And people value different things. We know that when there is a zone+new class in a chapter, the new class sells for less in the crown store than the zone. But even that doesn't mean much because where people get value isn't based on that.
Some of us would be fine with nothing more than narrative drops every year. Last year was about vampires. The year before was about dragons? Necromancer and antiquities? Whatever. Nice to have them, but didn't really add value for me. I would be just as happy with antiquities never being introduced into the game and with no Psijic line. I am not looking for filler that makes me go zone to zone to burn hours horseriding. But some people love having new skills or finding new furnishings.
Ideally chapters have something to appeal to everyone.
Chapters have been used to add game systems behind a paywall. Clearly those add value to many players. But arguing over whether that is the 'main' whatever is misguided. Saying you aren't interested in just narrative content without a new game system or class is completely reasonable as that is your feeling and people who feel that way might skip buying the chapter. That is an important consideration for ZOS.

Yeah, that's actually a very fair take on it tbh.
I suppose here it just feels like the new people that prefer new systems/skills kinda got shafted in favor of more narrative/zone driven stuff like companions.
And in the past these things have been used as big selling points for players that weren't interested in just the zone.
It's also completely understandable that players have different things that sell them on the chapter.

Where? I haven't seen anyone request for traveling companions. Ive seen a few people mention it here and there, but it isn't by any means something that the community has been clambering for.

since it's requested quite often I guess you could link some threads that show overwhelming support and desire for this feature?

Funny, a general census from those threads suggest that not everyone is in agreeance with this being a needed feature. While it's a thing people want, those threads aren't exactly bubbling with support.
There is no overwhelming support on any of the threads you linked.
