Im pretty sure the new zone isn't thought of as a feature, it's just the chapter location. It's a new 'thing' but it isn't a major selling point for the entire chapter, I don't think. Especially with how formulaic the new zones have been recently.

Back when they tried to... ahem... convince the players that chapters were not DLCs, and it was therefore OK for subscriptions to not include chapters (which were clearly DLCs) they pointed to these extra "features" that put them above and beyond what was then zone-based DLCs. Before that, the focus was always on the actual new zone. To my mind, it still is, though if you started playing more recently I could understand having a different view on it.4 -

Yeah, I started back in Elsweyr admittedly because the addition of a necromancer finally sold this game to me.
That's also around the time I started to lurk on the forums.
And everything since then have always been more hype/excitement for these marketable 'features' over the actual location, so that's where I got my logic from.3 -

And honestly, companions seem like much more work than simply adding a new combat skill line. You could throw that together using unused existing combat animations and shaders and it wouldn't even require voice acting. I have no idea why ZOS is so obstinate in keeping our combat toolkit so comically small.4 -

They could literally throw some NPC skills they designed for this chapter into a small skill line.
And call it a day. That's the sad part.2 -

They likely plan these things ahead more than a year. There might have been a skill line or class that was supposed to be in this expansion and they held it back so WFH is easier on the devs. Companions may have just been further along in development as compared to class/skill line, etc.0 -

Totally right...I mean the zone is definitely NOT a selling point. I forgot the new DLCs were called "New Skill Line" or "The Warden" and not silly names like "Greymoor" or Elysweyr" or "Summerset".

What matters is where people get value. And people value different things. We know that when there is a zone+new class in a chapter, the new class sells for less in the crown store than the zone. But even that doesn't mean much because where people get value isn't based on that.
Some of us would be fine with nothing more than narrative drops every year. Last year was about vampires. The year before was about dragons? Necromancer and antiquities? Whatever. Nice to have them, but didn't really add value for me. I would be just as happy with antiquities never being introduced into the game and with no Psijic line. I am not looking for filler that makes me go zone to zone to burn hours horseriding. But some people love having new skills or finding new furnishings.
Ideally chapters have something to appeal to everyone.

Personally I have seen this idea floating around the forums for a long while - since beta.

I agree with this. The threads that have the most support are dated back in 2016 and are barely posted on. Where as the more current ones, including polls, have more dissenting opinions and stances against it. While, yes, this isn't the majority of 'players', you can glean how patterns will follow and judging by the pool of data that was linked I'm inclined to believe that this isn't something that's overwhelmingly requested or desired. It's just simply 'requested' and promptly forgot about.
I can also understand that this could be much of a 'filler' year to fix some pretty bad performance issues, given last year's downward spiral - however unless they really put that foot forward, they're not going to convince me to spend any more of my money on them.Edited by Sephyr on January 26, 2021 9:30PM3 -
