Would a bad guild name keep you from joining?

I tend to prefer serious names but I have been in one or two that were what I would call whimsical.

Not in the slightest. I personally have a good laugh every time I go to a guild trader with a bad (funny) name

Would you refuse to marry Jennifer Lopez if she suddenly decided to change her name to Snuffleupagus?

Yes, that is a sure sign of mental baggage I just don't want to carry.

If you aren't bothered by a guild's name then that's fine. Not everyone cares.

But we aren't too serious because we want a guild's name to reflect the type of group we want to be associated with.

Not really? I'm more concerned about whether they can get along with me, that's not an easy thing. I ran a Legion in Aion named "We Ate Tutty". It was a direct troll to the Elyos, who have a starting zone quest called "Where's Tutty". You find Tutty, turning on a spit, getting ready to be eaten. Some of the players were seriously traumatized over that...

Yes, if the name is too idiotic I avoid them.

Outside references don't bother me or slight play on words.

The only thing it would change is the name I have to write on bouquet of flowers I send her for a fantastic night.

It's interesting that you pick "pink bow & rainbow sparkles" as the metaphor for "bad", whereas my first thought is "wrapped in garbage and dripping stale beer".

Maybe you could find a compromise? Garbage reeking of stale beer, adorned with a pink bow?
Honestly, it both sounds awful :p

The only thing I don't really like if a guild name has references to real life like some television show or to other games.

I had a guild in WoW called <Pulp Faction>. Yes it referenced a great movie, but also fit into the fact that there were different factions in the game. The members we got seemed to fit into our serious but not too serious atmosphere, so the name did influence who joined.

Hmm that is just a good reference also because it is a pun, I think people who come up with such a joke must be fun as well so why not join. The barrier for me is more when people adore something too much and reference it too much. Like some time ago, a friend didn't stop talking about a Netflix show I didn't really like (I don't like the genre) and in the end made a guild with the name of the show. That's just too much for me, same with guilds named after brands or something without making a joke.

It’s bad enough we have a cancel culture in real life, pretty sad to see it carry over into video games just because someone doesn’t like your name.

What does "I'd rather not join a group with name X" have to do with this silly "cancel culture" conspiracy theory?

The group & name still exists, it just isn't attractive to some potential members.

There is no conspiracy theory, just read through the thread. If people don’t like a guild name then fine don’t join, but not allowing people into a guild because of a silly name or reporting them for it is cancel culture.

I actually never said that, I said players with messed up names are not welcome in my guild. @StabbyBladeBlade is fine, @CldMol3stor isn't, that is the level of messed up name we turn down and I have we have seen some pretty messed up names apply.

well, yes. I had in a pug not so long ago a player called Metastase du Cancer. No need to translate, right ? I might be to sensitive, but both of my parents died of cancer. I was avoiding to look at the player, made me feel uneasy and a little sick to the stomach. makes you wonder why people use some names, player or guild. could be a nice psychology study :)

Definitely yes. I also make a point to chat with the GM. You would be surprised on the amount of cool guild names, but the GM in my opinion is the reason I leave. The GM is the guild, and the attitude /make up of the guild is set by him.

Even a really good lore friendly name may put me of if it clearly indicates that the guild aim is in a different direction to my interests

I would have immediately reported that name. That goes way beyond common decency and I'm pretty sure ZoS wouldn't be ok with it. The same goes for offensive guild names.

Names can have a huge impact on other players, which is one reason I don't want to be associated with a guild with a bad name, be it offensive or just plain silly.

In the days when I was interested in guilds I considered the name to be a good indication of the maturity level of the leadership and therefore the overall quality of the guild. It would either have attracted me, or repelled me. These days I simply have no interest in that aspect of the game.

I've seen some guilds advertising in zone chat that I would have been interested in joining, but they had really bad cringe worthy names. Would this stop you from joining, or does the name not really matter to you?

Stupid names would definitely lower my interests in them initially. But if the people in the guild were nice and helpful I could care less about the name. Unfortunately though, I may never get the chance to meet them due to the said stupid name.

So how you market your guild is important. Pick a decent name if possible, or even better one that reflects the goals and personality of your guild.

I don't know if this is the case on PC, but there's an option to prefer different names on console. You can prefer online ID or character name in your settings. I have used this option before when someone had a wildly offensive username like the one you described.

Yeah, but I'm mostly a spelling and grammar snob. Guild names can say a lot about the theme of the guild and that's great, I wouldn't be rejecting them over a name so much as just being incompatible. Some dumb guild names are dumb on purpose and as the founder of the Rouge Angles of Satin, I can only applaud that.

That's actually the only condition that could make me want to marry Jennifer Lopez.
