Would a bad guild name keep you from joining?

Both guild and player names (@name included) speak volumes about the person. And yes, I would not join a guild with a messed up name (IMHO) because I probably would not fit in. We also don't invite players with messed up names into our guild, as we don't feel they would fit in with what we represent either.

This reminds me of the first guild I joined in WoW right after it launched. Our guild leader would only take players with real sounding names. When he turned down a guy with a name that was something like "illstabyou" this player was so angry he put in a ticket to try to force our gm to let him join, claiming discrimination. Of course that didn't happen.

We weren't a overly serious guild by any means, but we didn't want to stoop to that level of silliness.

It’s bad enough we have a cancel culture in real life, pretty sad to see it carry over into video games just because someone doesn’t like your name.

What does "I'd rather not join a group with name X" have to do with this silly "cancel culture" conspiracy theory?

The group & name still exists, it just isn't attractive to some potential members.

It's what the name represents that's the issue. Your guild's name is the first thing players see. People will either be drawn to it or turned off by it. You may think [Pink Bunny Foo Foos] is a great guild name, but many would not want to join because of what that name represents.

There is no conspiracy theory, just read through the thread. If people don’t like a guild name then fine don’t join, but not allowing people into a guild because of a silly name or reporting them for it is cancel culture.

If a player can choose to join a guild or not based on what the guild name represents to them, then why can't the guild accept or deny a player based on what their name represents?

There is no "cancel culture". It's all about preference and finding the right guild for the player, and the right members for the guild.

Everyone should go with what they like. But with some guild names as well as with player names which you see in the chat or running around, it is just that they disturb the immersion.

Being able to associate or not with people of your choice, is not cancel culture.

Correct. Asking others to not associate with people who you do not want to associate with is.

The only thing I don't really like if a guild name has references to real life like some television show or to other games.

I had a guild in WoW called <Pulp Faction>. Yes it referenced a great movie, but also fit into the fact that there were different factions in the game. The members we got seemed to fit into our serious but not too serious atmosphere, so the name did influence who joined.

Yeah if I hated the name I wouldn't join. I think in this game it's probably less important than others as you have multiple guilds and it's not visible to others but I do prefer a good guild name nonetheless.

Depends, trading guild wouldn't matter at all if it's had spot I'm interested in. Casual surely, especially if it's name covers mocking of something like race or a nation as a recent example I've seen.

Generally, no, the guild name isn't especially relevant. But it's not hard to imagine a guild name that would be a deal breaker either.

What's bad? My bad? Your bad?

Since it's obviously a personal choice thing I'd say that the name of a guild may effect my looking to join. However, the people in the guild and how it's run would make up my mind.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you. These days, I care less about how pretty the wrapping on the outside looks, and more about the quality of the contents wrapped inside. It could be wrapped in a pink bow with rainbow sparkles on it for all I care...if whatever it is that's wrapped inside is of high quality, and functions as it's supposed to, then we're all good.

It's interesting that you pick "pink bow & rainbow sparkles" as the metaphor for "bad", whereas my first thought is "wrapped in garbage and dripping stale beer". Your version sounds like the 'good' one? :D

In the end, it probably matters what you're looking for in the guild - if you're just looking for a trade guild, and won't be interacting with anyone, then yeah. It probably doesn't make much difference. If you're looking for a group to socialize with, a guild name that suggests they have personalities/views that wouldn't match yours would matter. /shrug

The fact that this game lets you have five guilds and pick which to display (if at all) on your character also makes a difference. As opposed to a game where you just have one guild, and it's prominently hanging on your nameplate.

If I found it offensive or otherwise a name that I would not want to associate with, then yes, that would decide me against joining. I have only seen a few of these (although I don’t have guild names on display on everyone as that is just too much clutter on my screen!) and most are, if not exactly lore appropriate, clever or amusing or attempts there at. I haven’t yet had a guild that I wanted to join but the name deterred me, but then too the name is one of the first things one learns of a guild.

I personally find "a pink bow with rainbow sparkles" way more off putting than "wrapped in garbage and dripping stale beer". The reason being that the pink bow and sparkles makes me think the GM and members are all the type who post pictures of themselves with cat ears and noses on social media, and like playing furries, and are basically turning the guild, and game, into a hello kitty cartoon. Whereas garbage and stale beer makes me think of party guys.

I didn't, you used the word "bad". I never described a pink bow with rainbow sparkles as being neither bad nor good.

I've seen some guilds advertising in zone chat that I would have been interested in joining, but they had really bad cringe worthy names. Would this stop you from joining, or does the name not really matter to you?

    100% yes.

It’s not a deal breaker 99% of the time but some names clearly tell a story of a guild being something between a clown show to being full of complete bigots.

    Naming something Walmart is fine.

As they say in pro wrestling, a good name won’t make you but a bad one surely can break you.

Haven't really wanted to join guild at first (prefer playing solo), but eventually budged under weight of bank full of stuff too good to throw away and joined a trading guild. My whole process of finding one was to open guild finder and look for a name I liked. If ever looking for any other guild(s) to join, will do 100% the same.
