The only thing that holds the combat system back in ESO is performance and zos moving more checks to the server side. If ESO had good performance, no other MMO has better combat system in my opinion.

take away the weaving/cancelling for dps, restore performance and you are correct imo.

That's just my peace, I hope I didnt offend anyone. I just want this game to be great for EVERYONE.

The Problem with that is that the Things you want are really Not great in everyones mind
I know a Lot of people, myself included, who really hated when ZOS nearly entirely removed the Block cancelling of abilities bcuz now you can only really cancel with Dodge, weapon Swap or If you really want to by sheathing you wep (even tho im Not Sure If thats faster than Just letting the ani Go through).
The Game Just feels way slower than it used to be before.

On top of that, as many Others have already Said, No one is forcing you to Ani cancel.
You can easily do every normal Dungeon, Most vet Dungeons and also can quite properly PvP without cancelling stuff.

With all these threads about "fixing the bugs" and "combat system sucks" and what have you... i never seem to understand WHY you guys want that to be "fixed" (even though its implemented in the game at this point)

I mean what is your reasoning behind that?
    - its immersion breaking? well, you dont HAVE to do itI
    - is it because you cant do vet Dungeons? well, you cetrainly can!
    - is it because you dont have an equal playingfield in PVP? Well, the quicker and more agile combatant has the opper hand, talking about immersion...
    - is it because you want to be involved in Vet Trials or even Leaderboards? Well, even IF the so called "exploits" are going to be fixed, you wont be happy about gear restrictions, class restrictions etc, so you wont be participating in this category anyways...

i just dont get the point, and it honestly drives me nuts beeing called an "exploiter" and a "white knight shill" and what not, without one single reason i can at least understand! you say you want the game to be great for EVERYONE, well it would not be great for me if they changed the combat system....

The combat system is what keeps me playing. It's by far the games strongest feature. As someone else said, it's only held back by performance.

Myself and everyone I play eso with would quit the game if the combat system were changed to something more like wow. ESO has the best combat system in the genre. While you say other games are "immersive" and "smooth", I say slow, cumbersome, and boring.

It's a good thing the eso combat devs don't care about roleplayers and questers ;)

Can't satisfy everyone, some want engaging combat others want see every pretty animation.

I'm still playing despite all the zos actions just because of the combat system and lore part still, combat being primary focus for most evenings and it's the only actually strong feature left about the game as for now for me personally.
Wouldn't expect more before all their audits are done, it's a long road from their old vision i liked to the one i have no idea about yet.

League of legends has animation cancel, cs go has animation cancel, street fighter has animation cancel.

It’s a proper mechanic exist in many games.

The only games should definitely not have AC are real life sport game like F1 and nba2k.

Animation cancel or even weaving is not even required to complete harder content. Just play a tank and not worry about it.

I agree as well but ZoS made it part of the game it is going no where. I learned it and adapted to it. At this point i'm like meh about it. If system worked the way they dreamed we wouldn't need to do it. Since this game engine issue. Well it is here to stay unless they force animations to finish before next spell is que'd which would make game horrid and clunky.

Combat would feel awful without block, dodge, and weapon swap animation canceling.

Think of how frustrating it would to be stuck in an animation and not be able to perform those actions until it ended. People need to actually think about what an outright removal of animation canceling would do to the game before calling for it to be taken away.

It separates complete casuals from the hardcore and rewards the people who take time to learn it. It doesnt feel bad imo, and you dont have to do it to be successful.

Is there a better combat system out there? 100%, but lets not just remake the whole combat system like 6 years into a games lifespan just because you dont like it.

this is the classic misdirection. Nobody and i mean nobody wants or has asked for defensive animation cancelling to be removed. People have only ever asked for animation cancelling for the purpose to exaggerate dps to be removed for many reasons including:

    1) poor overall performance especially when alot of people are doing it
    2) ugly and glitchy
    3) empowers automators
    4) makes the game too easy for some and too hard for others.
    5) goes directly against the very core spirit of the "resources determine everything" combat system since resources do not determine everything. Light attacking is free and very significant.
    6) not standardized for internet connection so if you have 70 ping and i have 150 you have a massive advantage.

no way zos cant know all this.

With 18 agrees as I post this. If people are only concerned about light/heavy attack weaving, they should say so.

Look at your own list, several of those items apply to animation canceling generally, not just light/heavy weaves.

Other popular MMOs have LA weaving, they just do it in the form of auto-attacks. And yes if you activate an ability mid auto-attack it will cancel the aa animation. Only difference here is you are performing the auto-attack manually, which to me is more emersive not less, and definitely more engaging and makes the auto-attack feel more worthwhile instead of just feeling tacked on. And unlike other games, this allows you to time it yourself, making it possible to never see the animation at all if timed right, as opposed to those other games where it'll often happen at awkward moments making it look overly mechanical and unrealistic. So if it really is just the visual of it that bothers someone, the solution is to just get better at timing it.

They are all different games you are naming. Play them if that is what you want. The amount of effort ZOS make to appeal to RPr’s and housing enthusiasts is staggering, along with the amount of different tiers of difficulty in combat in the game.

Im not trying to be insulting here. I’m serious, I like fast, reactive gameplay. As do many of the other players in this game.

I honestly find this [snip] to be insulting to players like myself and even to ZOS with the amount of options you have here. [snip]

Or here’s a thought. Don’t do it then.

You’re not forced to ani cancel, light attack cancel, barswap cancel. Whatever. You’ve just said you enjoy role play, it’s not going to make that much of a difference... This game can be played however YOU choose. But don’t push your opinions onto the way other people want to play. I for one find light attack cancel extremely fluid, and it would feel insanely clunky just skill > skill > skill.

There is no greater (read: more complex; potentially-varied; nearly-infinitely customizable) combat mechanics / gear / math / enchant SYSTEM... buuuuut the decrepit engine simply can’t DO all the things.

The POTENTIAL is limitless... the reality is like, “why isn’t this supported and skyrocketing!?!”

They are balancing to keep game mechanics within the “physical” parameters of what it can actually process, anymore... instead of balancing for the most intensive; fast-paced; progressive; umm... functioning? lol system, going forward.

Doesn’t anything attract & retain the most people when it’s constantly getting better, and not meh?

No content in this game requires a player to cancel animations to be able to clear the content. Granted, many groups have DPS requirements to join their guild or join their raid group, but none require a player to cancel animations to raid with them. Most have DPS requirements that are not even close to requiring canceling animations.

So the notion that a player must cancel animations to be effective is incorrect.

Edit: I will note though that OP is correct that our combat is different than WoW. For a great many players that is a big reason, we play this game instead of WoW because we enjoy this better and more reactive combat.

Actually I'm just to the point where I don't care anymore. Every time I think the combat team is done messing with our builds, they turn around and pull the rug out from under us again. It gets to the point where it just becomes tiring and not fun to do end game content anymore. So I'm pursuing other things like playing Flight Simulator 2020. Hey, it's almost as exiting as playing ESO anymore, so why not?

Not sure why people bring up WoW and GW2 combat as if they are the best.

I liked the queue system if SWG combat, myself, because I am ultimately a strategist.

But when it comes to fluid combat Tera is the best I have seen.

I too agree that LA animation canceling is stupid and makes combat a mess. I wish they'd just give skills a proper cooldown.

i like gw2's combat system better because of the canceling thing BUT, I like ESO better for its storytelling. gw2 is terrible at it, its suffering heavily from Joss Whedon syndrome. (For those that don't know what that is, its where story tellers routinely kill off fan favorites for cheap emotional response. Which if done to often in a story, makes the fan stop putting emotional investment in to characters BECAUSE its likely that will mean the characters death.)
I like gw2's mount system better because each mount moves diff and has diff skills.
I like eso's unlimited craft bag better because it doesn't limit how much of a certain thing i can gather before my bag is full.
I like gw2's method of selling to players better because its not limited by being in a guild or 5.
I like eso's mail system better because you can have more than 10 mails in it at a time.
I like gw2's cash shop system better because is has a secure way to exchange gold for cash-shop currency.
I like eso's housing system better because its effing awesome in its unlimited creativity.
I like gw2's system of various currencies better because there isn't a cap on any of them.
    I like...

I could compare the 2 games all day, each has things it does well and the other doesn't. (gw2 doesn't have down time when updating the game for example)

If i could mash em together and get only the best features out of it. i'd love it. but alas that is not possible. so i play both games in turn.
What are Natch Potes? Can you eat those?
    I believe in Genie-Gina.
