Any time that I've ever pugged a dungeon on any support role, the dps are usually just terrible.

You've got one guy spamming light attacks with a bow and occasionally cloaking/ambushing in on the boss. Another time, one was running a 2h and an ice staff that kept pulling aggro, so we just left him dead. Not to mention the time where I had to tank around 13 (literally) daedroths on banished 2, and eventually just left the group after dying from zero resources.

I stick with running with guildies. I haven't pugged in a year at least. There's just so many people who don't know how to play the game/fulfill their role, and I low-key don't have the patience anymore.
13 :o , think my record is 10, the problem here was that the DD thought they could not kill any daedroths so if I dropped or lost some the DD would run around in circles until I grabbed them again, had we wiped I would explained that if i released daedroths they should run to the boss so they died in AoE, now that was an interesting fight. Was bubbled 4--5 times and did not see any other gotten bubbled.

And that is another benefit of guild groups, you can use discord. I would have shouted out mechanics or agree on stuff like pulling large groups of trash.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Ouch, a lot of healer's are not gonna enjoy that lol.

Every time I grind undaunted on a new char, I always prefer tanking because of super fast queue times and i can easily grind to level 9 in 1 day.

I go in with proper tank builds ready to tank even trials and I can tell you, tanking is the least appreciated role in pugs. right next to healing. 9 out of 10 times in a vet dungeon, you get paired with 2 DDs who do 15k dps combined and as a tank with hardly any weapon damage, i pull 5-10k dps.

When the group wipes due to failing dps check mechanics etc, guess who's getting the blame. No wonder there are no tanks willing to do pugs.

Yeah. When I can tank vet DLCs in trash gear like Rattlecage + Frozen Watcher and watch my dps go higher than 50% of the total group dps....

I mostly use the PUG finder on my man Templar hybrid tank. Maybe 30-40% of the time I do the same dps as the "dps" though. Maybe it's because I've been playing since beta but running the same dungeons over and over gets reeeealllyy boring If they take too long due tog low dps

Currently this is a big problem in the game, all the roles in the dlc vent dungeons are missing and not just the one as a tank.
If ZOS doesn't improve loots or create special loots for the required classes in the vet dlc dungeons the only way to play these new continuous dlcs is to have friends (very good friends) who always play with you, and considering the fact that it is an mmo and that many players already have many alts (most DDs) this is not that easy and normal.
ZOS think about this instead of churning out dlc vet dungeons!

All the above yes. I'm crap tank cause: i die because i'm pinned down and someone should interrupt, because people stay in red cirles, because we can't kill the first mob on vet, cause there is no dps, because "i have no self heals" when i slot only taunt and and almost all other skills are healing skills, and i have not died or taken much damage at all, but still no self heals, because no one knows mechs and die from 1-shots, because lord knows what. I once took the pinion as a tank on wgt and the healer said i should unistall the game. All kinds if stuff yesh.

    I don't find an option I like.

    1) I only take a pledge if it's a dungeon I planned to run in the first place, or I've been asked to help.

    2) I don't need the group finder because I have plenty of people to ask to run with.

    3) If I queue in the finder anyway I'd rather be a DD, it's easier to carry that way. I can solo DD most fights, and it will still go faster than most pugs.

The other day I pugged as a DD, it's a weird recruitment method, but I found some of my current guild members like that. (So, if you're in the same run as me, you don't know it but it's a job interview :3). vMGF, we reach the penultimate fight (I took care of all the mechanics at this point, and ~80% of the dps), the tank has to leave. I quickly switch to tank and the healer finds a DD.

I don't know how, but somehow they got the clear. Dps was super low, I as a tank was handling every single mechanic, and providing 40% of the group healing. They just (barely) outhealed the tether mechanic, without ever moving to the pillar.

As a tank you're much more vulnerable to a bad group, and at the same time people ask you to run with them if you're good, so you don't really need the finder in the first place.

I use group finder almost always, but I mostly play dd :) I stopped tanking at all 2 years ago. For all reasons listed, plus I didn't like changes to tanking and dungeon mechanics - this role simply became not enjoyable.

Few weeks ago, when new motif was released from Icereach dungeon, I decided to run it couple times as tank (for instant queue, and to sell motif pages while they were hot)... I spent 40 minutes in queue as tank, and in the end I got into group with very low damage. It took them few minutes to kill first pack of adds :o I left the group on the first boss (giant), when after 5 minutes of fight boss had 90% health left.

After that, I spent in queue few hours - yes, as tank... Nobody wanted to run DLC dungeon, with fresh shiny motifs to sell :o It's hilarious, but also very sad. My wish to sell those motifs was not strong enough to waste more of my time, so I retired my tank again :)

I'm always grateful for decent tanks who use group finder though <3 I just don't have any patience myself anymore, after all nerfs and bad changes to the game.

All of the above, maybe less so fake healer - I can keep myself up quite happily in base game dungeons and most classes have pretty good self heals. Pugged on my Dk tank a while back; swore I'd never do it again and converted him to dps / pvp. Levelled a warden tank recently and yes, I'm an idiot and figured I'd pug a few to finish his undaunted off. Oh dear god. I think I managed 3 dungeons before I said never again. Dps running ahead and pulling stuff - and then dying and complaining that I wasn't tanking the adds. Incredibly slow ttk on trash packs and inadequate dps on bosses, to the point the final group couldn't even finish BC2. Zero knowledge of mechanics - do people really not get they need to hit the pillars in WS2? -and zero communication for the most part. It's just not fun. In the end, just grabbed some guildies and we knocked out a couple of no death speed runs on last night's pledges for the achievements. Gave me enough to finish undaunted and never have to tank a pug again.

Normals are a different matter. All my toons are set up to tank and I used to run the daily RND on each for the xp. I don't expect that much from lowbie groups - maybe 15k between the 2 dps and healer, and a healer with a class heal - and build accordingly. They're sometimes a little slow but it's all manageable and usually fun.

I used to queue solo to help the GF but after a while I got tired of such poorly skilled players, mostly low DPS but also not able to notice mechanics even when told and more issues. It just gets old after awhile.

Because the dungeon finder has no way to consider what kind of game play. So you get a rock star trying to practice speedrunning it, someone who can probably solo it and just wants the undaunted quickly or to practice for vet, someone who wants to do the quest this time and a newb. All this ends in disaster because nobody gets what they want.

When I'm tanking I do it on normals with guild people for fun and laughs. We do it at whatever rate we feel like, we usually kill all the trash, we stop and do the storylines, sometimes we even open all the barrels and stock up on provisioning stuff and whatever.

If I queue in the dungeon finder the odds are rather against getting a group like that.

Because there's no point in dealing with inconsiderate players with no dps when you can just whisper someone from your friends list or ask in guilds and actually have fun.
Not saying that everyone in group finder is terrible, but there's enough terrible players to make it not worth it.

Group doesn't do mechanics (freeing allies from pins etc)
I don't like being grouped up with people who have no idea about the mechanics in Vet dungeons.
How hard is it to first try the normal dungeon to get an understanding and how hard is it to take some time to read a Wiki?

Well I have to vote like this but major problem I see is in not knowing the mechanics and unability to learn them even I explain. Thats first, second is existence of lvl 80 players in Craddle of Shadows type dungeons. Without knowledge of mech, gear os skill they want to survive there on veteran.

This is why I try to just DPS when farming Vet DLCs for motifs. I can deal with an average tank or healer, but average DPS can make it hard to complete dungeons. Don't get me wrong, we may wipe a few times because the tank isn't so good, but I feel better about that then wiping and getting frustrated because the DPS is bad.

The last time I pugged with my tank it was helping someone with depths of malatar DLC. It was the worst two hours of my life as I repeatedly got dawnbreakered around by 12+ adds on the orb boss while trying to res my allies who died across the room. We never finished.

That's basically why I no longer pug tank. As DPS I can carry, as healer I can ensure DPS stay alive, but as neither all I can do is sit and watch the chaos unfold.

I typically tank pledges for one of three (or all) reasons:
    1. To get the Daily Transmute Crystals
    2. To get specific Monster Helm's
    3. To get 6 undaunted keys (usually for shoulders)
Typically in PUG's, the experience is anything but optimal, involving many or all of the above listed categories.

But if I had a choice, I'd choose to run with my guildies.
    Why?
Because I don't see or expect: "LFM - 6key pledges + Challenger/Trifecta" in zone chat.
Simply put, the majority of PUG'rs from my anecdotal experience lack either the skill, motivation, or both, to regularly meet those preferred expectations.

As someone who has started to tank regularly DPS is king in ESO you can be the best tank that ever lived in ESO but if you have non existent "dps" your not getting through anything and as many have said above your at the mercy of the group.

pugged a Vet Banished Cell 2 the other day had a fake healer and non existent dps we made it to Rilis XII and it was horrible i ended up tanking 6 or 7 Deadroths be4 we wiped we kicked out the 440 CP dps and got another dps an 810 who was just as bad or worse than the 440 again I stacked the Deadroths on boss since even with great dps you'll need to kill 2 or 3 deadroths just so you don't get overwhelmed and ended up the same way me and fake healer left. Me and my friend got on our DPS characters and blazed through the dungeon with some bad randos in zone chat.
