Two reasons why Zenimax dropped the required subscription.
1. The required subscription and traditional MMO financial format was not popular upon release.
2. Consoles already require a subscription in order to play online, they did not want to discourage console players from getting into their game.

Since the change to an optional subscription their game has been more alive than ever.

I was a loyal subscriber even before the plus option but it seems that this current format of using the money store to fund the project has become the most optimal way to keep the game running.

This was about eso+ requirement to post on the forum, not about the game. I thought it is not a bad idea, because the forum from warhorse studio has something like this in place - just the backers of the fund raiser for kingdom come deliverance are able to post there.

i'll go with the performance fix, but i'm sure something like "every item in the crown store is now available through in-game activities" would have an even bigger effect.

Bolded that right there. That's it. That's the ONLY thing they need to do. They can nerf or change gear. Screw up builds ppl have worked months on. We can and always have adjusted. But if you made Cyrodiil run under 100 ping(and i mean no matter WHAT was happening on screen!?!?) THAT RIGHT THERE....would not only blow ppls minds. But hundreds, if not thousands of players would buy this game.

Replace every ingame npc by giant pink alfiqs.

Replace every ingame language by Ayleid.

Replace every ingame enemy by rainbow-farting unicorns.

Replace all weapons and attacks by "gentle kiss" and "free hug" moves.

The good answer was "I ain't loosin' my mind, I'd sell it to uncle Sheogorath".

I think people would lose their minds if racial passives were balanced again and a stealthy advantage was given to, say... Nords.

For something more positive, I think people would go bananas if something really unexpected was released, like a new base game system with no monetization or a surprise extra dungeon or trial.

Actually... I would kinda like that? IF... it was its own server. For example: NA Mehrunes Dagon (PvP) & NA Meridia (Standard)... and might as well throw in NA Sheogorath (Roleplay).

Anyone else play Runescape? Well... I used to, but now just occasionally log in. I wonder if they still have the PvP server (among the other dedicated servers).

The gist of it is.... log into the regular server first! Make sure you are in a safe area (Runescape used banks as non-pvp areas). Then log into the PvP server. Now.... you can be attacked by anyone, anywhere, except for dedicated non-PvP areas (in ESO, I can see that being player homes, and all interiors.... except for taverns! Bar fight!).

Bring on the chaos!
