No maintenance 4 May 2020? Why not?

How is it that performance is at an all time low and there is no scheduled maintenance tomorrow?

Things like this convince me that Zenimax's performance issues have more to do with simply not buying enough or high enough quality server capacity. Are we looking at a situation where performance will never be fixed because the accounting department has decided to put the devs in a box that is impossible to work out of? Is this why performance is always better at off peak times, then goes to the toilet as soon as zone populations go up?

The longer this goes on the more things look like we just aren't getting the hardware to support the awesome software the devs create.

When there is maintenance, we get threads asking why they need to do maintenance every week.

When there is no maintenance, we get threads asking why there isn't any maintenance this week.

You want them to do maintenance just to make you happy or do you want them to do well thought out maintenance that might actually have an effect.

You do not just do things haphazardly which is essentially what you are clamoring for.

Because they are preparing for Greymoor’s launch this month. That’s where their focus is and so they have less time for small patches.

They aren’t going to do server maintenances when it’s meaningless.

I want them to do maintenance every day until the performance issues are resolved if that's what it takes. I'm not asking for special treatment as your [snip] post insinuates. I'm only asking why there is no maintenance when so many things need fixing.

They should be showing us they are working on the performance issues by implementing fixes. That requires down time for patching.

Not having maintenance when things are in this bad of shape makes it appear as though Zenimax isn't even trying.

They are doing some kind of animation caching and that is new to the performance things they are doing. They are releasing this to the pts tomarrow
So that means some of the biggest things is
Animation caching and the thing with reducing the effects of pets on the servers and a few other things too.
I do hope that this animation caching thing will help the servers enough to help performance. Along with the pet changes anything they can do to help it would be welcome.

The more one follows this topic, the worse it seems. Like PETS? ? They were already banned in trials... Are they just trying to fix the crown store by putting them back in trials? It's not fixing the worsening trials that already forbade pets for sure. It's not fixing Cyrodiil that already doesn't allow pets. It might help dueling in cities, dungeons, and overland content. But what's four extra NPCs in a dungeon really gonna do.
These changes might come out wack, who knows... But if they do fix something... When you loose all hope, It's like a spontaneous gift. When you have hope and they don't deliver, it's like your parents don't love you, didn't get you a gift, and now your disappointed.

But alas If animation caching is what I think it is, It just may fix stuff.

There was more, unscheduled maintenance after that, last week.

When are people going to wake up? Fixing it would involve huge amounts of investment. That money got spent on new crown shop junk and greymoor.

With more new players than ever they won't skip new dlcs and chapters to make fixes.

You're right. Sadly I've come to the conclusion they cant't fix it. It's why I canceled my eso+ today. Which is strange since we are approaching a big expansion which I paid for already. But I can't justify giving them money anymore. I'll check back with the game in a few months and see if they managed to get a grip. But I won't hold my breath.

It also requires coding be ready to apply to fix it. Taking the servers down for x amount of time a day isn't going to cure any issues, if there's no actual patch to resolve something. Despite what some seem to believe, there's no magical button to press to fix something, the issue has to be something they can replicate, and then analyze before they can fix if, and if they can't reproduce it, they can't fix it.

Contrary to your "baiting" claim, they do have it right. If the server came down, with no patch to address issues, the forums would explode. We only have to go back a couple of weeks to find at least one thread insisting that they shouldn't do maintenance during someone's prime time to play as well, despite time zones being a thing, and it's always going to be someone's prime time.

Though if the maintenance wouldn't solve anything due to ineffectiveness, there is no need for a maintenance this week.

Typically on the cusp of a Major Update, the patches slow down. Then 1 to 2 weeks before the new content drops, we get a big patch that prepares the game for the new content.

So, this is following that pattern.

Didn't they do extra maintenance last week? Maybe whatever they normally do on a Monday was included in that and running it again a few days later would be pointless?

Although the cynical part of me thinks it's because after years of asking them to postpone maintance which is scheduled for a European bank holiday they skipped the one where the holiday was moved (to Friday) to tie in with the anniversary of VE day.

It actually is in a lot of countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Day "May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on 1 May or the first Monday of May."

Traditionally it's the 1st of May that's the actual festival, but it's usually the first Monday in May which is a public holiday, because that's more consistent - pretty pointless having a public holiday on a weekend when the majority of people are off work anyway.

(The fact that it sometimes coincides with Star Wars day is a coincidence.)

That's highly unlikely to be the reason there's no maintance however as they've consistently ignored previous public holidays which fall on a Monday (as many of them do) unless it's an America public holiday. Which must suck for the people maintaining their EU servers who have to work through the majority of public holidays.
