wow. Are you seriously forcing people to start in expansions of Zeni's choice for the tutorial?

Just let us choose where to start damn it.
    Exactly.

I mean, it cannot be that hard, can it? Just a simple choice to make between chargen and jumping into the game... "where do you want to start - Coldharbour Prison / Firemoth Island / Summerset Mind Trap / Elsweyr Temple / -upcoming Skyrim whatever-"

I'm still pissed that characters created before Morrowind are unable to do ANY chapter tutorial and will always be 1 skillpoint less than characters created after Morrowind. For a game that's about collections and achievements, this is pure bulls***. That right there was the start of me not giving a f*** about the game.

For a game that's so quest-focused they certainly don't care a lot about story and continuity. It's like, whatever, just put new players in the prettiest zone so far.

I wish we still started in cold harbor or at least give us a choice. The story is just all over the place for new players unless they follow a list of MSQ story order.

"more introductory things for new people to familiarise themselves with ESO!"

ESO can be daunting - at first I had little idea as to what traits are, how I am to research things, smithings, clothing, woodworking, master writs - now I got it, BUT I had been reading a lot and finally managed to grasp the mechanics of crafting - and this is a huge part of any game for me.

You know what I like ESO for? Complexity. People from WoW come here and are lost - hurt even. "ME MUST THINKS!" (alas, the forefather isn't demanding).

Yes, if you want to be successful, you have to use your mind, plan, predict, etc. - to be successful. ESO is ***-hostile.

Expect failures - failed characters, wasted materials, BUT the experience is invaluable. And in the process of doing so, remember what others may ask about when they are new.

Perhaps too much philosophy, OR I simply enjoy the opportunity to use one's mind instead of mindlessly pressing two, three buttons.

Let new people have opportunities to learn and take the initiative, responsibility for their learning. Skills will come - in time.

Yeah I thought this was really strange and a dumb idea. I had been away for awhile but came back recently to get caught up and play through elsweyr. Decided to make a necro after I got two characters caught up and was like what? No choice, no direction to go to the harborage or anything. This is implemented in a terrible way. New players have no clue what they are missing out on by not started in the vanilla zones. But the worse part of it is Zos doesn't show players what to do.

I started a new character the other day, there was absolutely no indication to go to your starter town and talk to the hooded figure. I figure it’s because ZOS is embarrassed about bringing back dead characters to sell chapters, and they want new people to avoid learning the truth about the planemeld sacrifices being for nothing.

It could be that as they have developed 'tutorials' they decide that they needed to be a bit more thorough. Hence, the Elswyr tutorial. Which I actually enjoy.

However, since they have created multiples, it would seem logical to let the player decide which - if any - they choose to use.

    IMHO

I can see your point - I also found it odd to encounter chars which COULD potentially not be there. However, ZOS being ashamed? Not really, and let's face it - everyone at some point was new. Some players may have chosen different endings, and my blind guess is the following:
Varen would have been the one to be sacrificed to Molag Bal. Sai and Lyris are too... oh, I don't know young, corageous, promising, whatever. They have a future. Varen? The ragged emperor? Hardly. Maybe as a Moth Priest...

There could be something like "You have a choice: the beginning 'planemeld' is for new people who want to play game lorewise chronogically, from the 1st chapter; '(name of the chapter)' for people who wish to begin their adventure t this particular chapter". If we have the possibility of creating new chars, why not let every char to begin someplace else?

    Simple as that.

I have a friend who picked up the game when Summerset came out. To this day his home city and where he does all of his writs and everything is in Summerset.

I sometimes wonder if this is common, and if part of this strategy is not just to take new folks to the new content, but also as a way to try and have all of the zones a little bit populated because humans are creatures of habit.

Either way there is no good solution for everyone, when you consider both sides, but it sure does bug me when characters that haven't gone through the main story see Abner Tharn as an option to jump to Elsweyr. Idk why but I find that particular one very annoying.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.
