Maintenance for the week of November 25:
• [COMPLETE] Xbox: NA and EU megaservers for maintenance – November 27, 6:00AM EST (11:00 UTC) - 9:00AM EST (14:00 UTC)
• [COMPLETE] PlayStation®: NA and EU megaservers for maintenance – November 27, 6:00AM EST (11:00 UTC) - 9:00AM EST (14:00 UTC)

We need a way to manage this overwhelming amount of materials

I mentioned this in another thread, but I can't resist repeating. :)

I think a great solution for this would be to provide a separate storage for crafting materials, but make it cost like 20,000 or more. This way only the dedicated crafters will buy it and it will play into the immersive qualities of the game.

So players have to suffer the pain to get those 20k to fix the inventory?.

Your idea is good but If there were no inventory problem at all.

I can't pretend I know the GW2 system, but it basically sounds like exactly what I'm asking for. I'd even be willing to give up the lions share of my bank space if it means getting a larger, dedicated crafting bank. I only need 20 or less slots for my non-crafting storage. Enough room for some trophies, rare fish, and an alternate set of gear would be more than enough.

I understand the concept of having pack mules to carry extra gear and crafting mats, but I think it goes against the best new game design I've seen in an mmo recently, and that is the ability to craft with mats being in the bank. Why allow us to do that if all of our mats are going to end up on alts? I like what gw2 did with storage of crating mats. I like every other aspect of the game so far, other than storage management.

One of the devs stated in a recent Reddit AMA that the inventory space limit was a deliberate mechanic designed to make it hard to specialize in too many crafts. In other words, choices have consequences.

I started out doing wood, cloth, and all three consumable crafts on one char. Around level 12 I dropped provisioning and enchanting, keeping just wood, cloth and alchemy. I no longer have to loot every barrel and crate, which actually makes gameplay quite a lot more fun, and while I still have a lot of mats to manage, it is in fact manageable.

I'll make other chars specializing in enchanting, provisioning, and blacksmithing later... no more than one craft each. Want to get my main to where bank space is maxed before I do that though ;)

Interesting. I thought the incentive to keep you from specializing in too many crafts, was gimping your character. Sure, you can spend points and max out every crafting profession. You're not going to have the combat proficiency to kill a squirrel, but that's your choice.

I'd even be for a madly expensive crafters bank. Like 50k gold for a 200 slot materials bank. Something would be better than anything.

At this juncture it's becoming a moot point. We've all learned to just keep the mats we plan on using, have mule characters, and dump in our guild banks. Hopefully something changes, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, the crafting inventory mini game is annoying sometimes. I was picking up everything I saw on all my of characters, and then sending them to the bank and then funneling them onto another character, which then dispensed those mats back to the correct character with the skill for it. Now, this wouldn't be a problem usually, but the sheer amount of mats and tedious inventory arrangement makes it frustrating.

I have stopped doing that, however, as it was too time consuming. I now just pick up mats appropriate to the character I'm on, unless it's a rare or scarce mat. I never feel like I can have enough of those.

This "collect everything I can get my hands on" habit I really need to drop. But currently I got like two characters I am leveling (one for solo play, one for group play) and my bagspace and bank is just filling up SO FAST. This is also due to all these 'research' items I need for the different crafts I am leveling them in.

So I got one extra 'mule' character that holds on to the cooking mats, enchants etc. Otherwise I can't set a foot outside the citywalls or I have to go find a merchant already to sell stuff or a crafting stations to deconstruct them.

So I do agree that the inventory management capabilities in the early game is slightly hard and annoying at times. But I think ones you got that cargo horse and feed it them carrying oats. it will become easier in the mid game/end game stage. At least I hope, because Teamspeak is mostly filled at this moment with comments like "*random curse* I need another merchant..." or "Inventory Malfunction" or "This inventory could not compute" etc. My orc has 80 bagspace and 70 bankspace and it still happens every 1 hour at least 3 times. :p

I think this is where you, as the character (not a player) have to decide which crafting path to focus on, and possibly only keep materials for that, or those crafts.

Alternatively, if you have more than one character focussing on different crafts, use the in game mail system to send appropriate materials to those other characters for their specific crafts.

My nightblade is focussing on Woodcraft for Bows, Clothing (for Leather), and Enchanting.

At the moment i'm not keeping any Ore/Metal bars and selling them to improve my gold balance to buy more space in both bag, and bank.

Also don't forget you can 'feed' your mount once per day, and part of the bonuses is additional carrying capacity (1 space per day up to 100 extra spaces)

It all comes down to character specific focuses.
Sorry, kinda late coming to this thread, however what you say about focusing on the character is one approach but it only makes sense where each character has their own bank. With the bank restricted to the account - and up to 8 characters, all of which could be wildly differing levels, the limitations on the bank are far too restrictive.
I agree with OP, a better way to manage crafting mats needs to be found.

Imo it is perfectly justified to make it so that players cant be jacks of all crafting trades. If im a blacksmith and you are an enchanter, how would you feel if i could dump every rune i find in my inventory and will thus generate competition for you without having a single consequence, while still leveling my smithing at the same speed?

I think the biggest problem currently is that if you mark something as Junk, it's junk until you sell all items from that filter. Then you go out and those gathered items are no longer junk. This doesn't sound logical and I wonder if it is working as intended. Think I'll start a thread on this topic alone if no one else has.

Yeah just because we have the ability to pick up everything that isn't nailed down doesn't mean its a wise choice to do so. So yeah just work on a few crafts at a time and vendor or sell to other players stuff you no longer need.
Indeed, I'm starting to learn this. A hard habit to break, I must say.
That's because in Skyrim we had mods that gave us unlimited bag space.

Deposit the items in the bank. Log out. Log-in on them, go to the bank, it's an account-wide bank, withdraw from the bank.

Absolutely, I think we mostly agree that no single person should be a master of every craft. I just wish the bank was a bit larger or had mats tab. Typically in MMOs, I save as much crafting stuff as possible, since I know eventually, I'll have an alt in the profession.

Provisioning could use a serious overhaul to reduce that absurd amount of different materials, but otherwise I don't see a problem.

I am a hoarder as well and feel like there is just not enough space. Either the amount per upgrade needs to go up or make them easier to get. I had to make alts just to have space. What put me in this mess to begin with is the CE maps that don't condense. If anything these items should not count against your storage space. I am at a point where I am just not going to worry about leveling provisioning because there are just not enough space for it.

I was able to find a smaller guild that had only crafting mats in the guild bank. Somehow with an unspoken code people seem to be only taking what they need and putting things in all the time. For the purple provisioning recipes the mats can be hard to come by, but having 15 or so people just dumping in there when they find them makes it so much easier. If I take the mats out and make something out of them i'm sure to throw something in there in return. Whether it be a rare rune, 50 leather, w/e. This way the bank only seems to be growing in mats and everyone seems to be quite happy about it. Of course this isn't going to work for everyone but making a guild and recruiting 9 members isn't too difficult. With the ability to be in 5 guilds at once most people can do this.

Also I wanted to speak about being gimped for being a jack of all trades. This is not quite true. You will of course have less points to spend in your class/weapon skill trees but you can only have 5 skills and an ultimate on your bar anyways. In my case i'm a sorcerer. 2 skill slots are for my summoned minions. 1 skill slot is for my crystal shard. Which is the only skill i've learned from that skill line. 1 skill slot for my Mages fury. 1 skill slot for my Lightning elemental ultimate. And 1 skill slot for elemental blockade from my Destruction Staff skill line. Anyways with morphing each of those that is only 12 skill points and I have my ability bar full. I'm level 31 with at least 60-70 skill points total. I easily could invest in all the crafting professions and have skill points for passive skills.

I have 6 alts/mules, 1 craft alt, and 1 main. I just finished provisioning this weekend and will focus on the next one this week. I spent 6 hours on Sun just moving items and crafting, I want a house so bad I would settle even for a small room at an inn.... I just wish the banks were linked this would make the swapping of resources so easy to manage.

    I have to agree.
i gladly pay for "tabs" in my bank. i know we have those but what i mean is say 30 slot expandable tab just like the regular ones we have now but for crafting items for a single profession only.
a bit different but GW2 has a wonderful system it would be amazing it we got a system like that.

also that tech can be modified to allow us to have a modestly sized tab for a character not shared by the others to store items specific to that character.
