We need a way to manage this overwhelming amount of materials

So the past few days, I've been following my typical MMO loot habits. Which is basically "I see it, I loot it". Which wasn't a problem for most of Day 1. I'd just dump EVERYTHING in my materials slot into bank. It became a problem yesterday when I filled my bank, and uttered a loud "WTF". The shear amount of materials in this game, it's absurd.

I humbly suggest a limitless (or huge limit, eg. 100 upgradable to 200?), (sortable by profession?), "materials" tab in our banks. Let us keep our regular banks for important items, like the 30 treasure maps that don't condense, or for trading gear/consumables between characters. The notion that I need to have several mules to keep all of my loots makes me feel like I'm playing an outdated MMO from 2004.

Please, ZOS, there has been plenty of complaints about bank size in general, and the overwhelming amount of varying crafting ingredients. Please make it less of a headache to keep them.

I think this is where you, as the character (not a player) have to decide which crafting path to focus on, and possibly only keep materials for that, or those crafts.

Alternatively, if you have more than one character focussing on different crafts, use the in game mail system to send appropriate materials to those other characters for their specific crafts.

My nightblade is focussing on Woodcraft for Bows, Clothing (for Leather), and Enchanting.

At the moment i'm not keeping any Ore/Metal bars and selling them to improve my gold balance to buy more space in both bag, and bank.

Also don't forget you can 'feed' your mount once per day, and part of the bonuses is additional carrying capacity (1 space per day up to 100 extra spaces)

It all comes down to character specific focuses.

Ah, very good call. I forgot all about feedin' the steed. My guild hit 10 players last night, so I'm going to make the GBank wide open and throw stuff in there for my guildies to use. (Since most mats don't even sell for 1g, unless I'm doing it wrong B) )

I don't see a problem with the number of materials. This is an elder scrolls game. Focus on a few crafts or just purchase a ton of space for your bank/pack.

cook first materials sell better cooked and plenty of places to cook. Have other characters hold your other crafting materials. You will need one for each craft and run each mule to a bank and increase their inv bag size at a bag guy.

Yeah just because we have the ability to pick up everything that isn't nailed down doesn't mean its a wise choice to do so. So yeah just work on a few crafts at a time and vendor or sell to other players stuff you no longer need.

Indeed, I'm starting to learn this. A hard habit to break, I must say.

Hi, My name is Pang and I'm a MMO hoarder. :) Seriously though yeah the difference in ESO is space is limited at first, whereas in other games you could expand it faster or don't have as much available to loot.

If Bethseda/Zenimax made it so I can loot it, they WANT me to have it, dammit! D:

I agree that the rate at which you acquire crafting materials greatly exceeds the rate at which you can craft, but also agreeing with a previous commenter, it's an Elder Scrolls game. The option to do everything is there, but at this early juncture in the game it's probably best to focus until you have the resources to do everything you want.

Alternatively, you could create multiple "bank" characters to hold extra stuff.

Its the worst for cooking, you get so many more materials than any of the other craft.

Indeed, that's what I'm doing thus far. I have a character for woodworking, a character for clothier, one for BS, and another for alchemy. The rest of the stuff I'm going to give out to my guildies.

Thanks for the response so far guys, keep em' comin!

I would like to see a "material tab" similar to GW2's collectibles tab.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I just started cooking all my food and selling the potions back to merchants to free up space and make some gold. Also levels my provisioning, which I hadn't intended, but what the hell haha.

I was in the similar situation as the OP and since my current character is 100% crafter I refused to let any material go to waste. Here I am with 4 alt acting as bank and me spending 1-2hour a day simply shuffleing material around. :astonished:

You will quickly learn that this is a foolish decision. Having ALL the crafts on one toon doesn't leave much room for class, weapon, armor, and racial skills. When you reach level 15 or 20 and can't kill a squirrel, you will regret all the points you put into trade skills #3-7.
I wasn't an Elder Scrolls fan until ESO. I did like the Construction Set for Morrowind, though.

For Provisioning, choose the type of stat you want, since you can only have one active at a time. Then just pick up the relevant mats and leave/ignore the rest. Eg. if you're Stamina based, you'll want to pick up [meat] and drippings and ignore meal, broth, and whatever is used for drinks. You'll be able to tell when you're at a fire.

Similarly, you can narrow down alchemy and enchanting to a certain few you want to pick up if you're just leveling them up. Not grabbing everything might make your crafting leveling go slower, but you'll be a lot slower overall if you grab everything.

Truth is, you can't keep everything. Make choices and stick to 2-3 professions and your issues will magically disappear.
All that is needed is a little effort.

The best way to micro manage your crafting materials is to turn them all in to sub components. You get the XP for it and you consolidate space. After that you have the choice of either doing all the trades OR join a trade guild and selling the sub components.

Another option is to join a crafting guild. Dump your materials in the guild bank and they'll disappear pretty darn fast!

I'm just glad the items don't have a weight like in skyrim then you would be running back to the bank every 5 minutes :)

since it is mostly junk leveling anyways, all i do is use it when i come to town. i will take the mats, turn them into something, then break them down, rinse repeat till i have nothing left, except the experience i gained from doing so, leaving me plenty of room. on a single toon.

this is doable for ALL tradeskills.

hoarding seems to be the problem most people are having, i mean why hoard it? use it up, get levels out of it, heck i made like 40 robes today out of jute, 20 something iron hammers, etc... the experience doesn't seem to cap on crafted items, so use the mats up.

endgame, i can see it being an issue, as you'll want to save mats to make specific things etc.. but why hoard it till then?

Provisioning and Enchanting have "Tiers" of items. If you have moved on to the next tier, it is safe to dispose of the previous tiers. Likewise a Clothier really does not need Jute laying around when they are like level 35.

Just a few thoughts as I am a hoarder of all things not nailed down. If there was an AH then I would perhaps retain the lower tier items for selling reasons, but as it stands the guild stores will not function for that purpose very well if at all.

I tried this but the problem was I ran out of money for crafting molds pretty dang fast and at level 20 I have literally only found 5 of the round enchanting stones so my whole bank is full of the square and triangle ones I literally cant make anything and just deconstruct what I find. So I upgrade my bank slots and bags and that just makes the money for molds harder to come by .... And I have to save some money in case I need to repair for 500 gold as happens sometimes.

hmmm this may be my reason then, i am playing a caster, wearing only light armor, so my repairs have been at most 100 g (one quest reward at level 10ish) . so i would suggest junking or trading off half of those square and triangle runes to make room for round when you get them, granted i see you'll be losing mats, but what else can ya do. i agree it gets tight, like today i quested and gathered all day, and came in, with several loads, and DIDN'T craft early on, so i could do more quests, but i was under level 10 and had quested enough to earn over 5k in gold, which was plenty to turn all my mats into experience. only buying one inv expansion. don't get me wrong, i'm not bragging here, just stating my experience, and i haven't started provisioning, which might be a game changer, but for now i'm having no issues approaching it in the above mentioned manner.

tried the mailing to myself to hopefully give me a few more slots in my bank but when i hit "Send"a message comes up that says I can't send items to myself in the mail. Either I'm doing it wrong (doubtful but a chance) or don't try the mailing thing as it won't work.

@Inzainia well the problem is there are quite a few different runes so like each stack is only 3 or maybe 4 runes So it's not the total number of runes I have its the massive variety.. If I had say 3 stacks of one kind sure I would toss a stack or 2 on the market but its like I have a *** of little stacks lol :D

i think that everyone has a good point here. we all are hoarders. period. we all need to admit it. anyone that plays a TES game proper and loves the game is at heart a hoarder. and we all do need to manage it better. but on the other hand these materials are needed and they take up alot of space. i throw away what i can and my bank isnt filled up yet but im going to get there. a material specific bank slot would be nice. and cutting down the research time would be nice too. because i have started putting lots of armor and weapons in the bank now for later research. but it takes so long that in a week i will not make a major dent in research.
or they could up the upgrade slot amount. double it maybe.
