So many people want 1h and rune...I'm curious what the vision is for the skill line. Do the skills change function based on the rune equipped? What does the rune add?

just because a sword is involved doesnt mean physical damage...i think ppl just want a more melee focused magicka weapon with lower distance spells such as flame thrower, magicka buffs (buff your sword with elemental damage etc) and self buffs/shields etc.... basically the way a lot of people played Skyrim...which would fit a skyrim chapter

    ....staff boooty
At least magica builds get four different flavors of staff.
Melee stamina builds have a wide range of choices, but... ranged stamina builds? Only bows, which is even sadder then magica builds...
Also, double rune would be nice.
It would be a logical progression. If we have a magical rune as offhand, it would only make sense to have them as two-fisted magic-slinger skill line as well!

People have also been complaining that melee magicka (DK and Templar) sucks ever since release.

Don't get me wrong, spellsword playstyles sound like fun, but they don't work with ESO's current system, at all. We'd need much more substantial changes to get something like that going, just another skill line won't do.

While it's true we could use some more substantial changes for magicka-melee, it's not really accurate to suggest it doesn't work currently. Some players have definitely gotten it to work - myself included - and it makes for a distinctive, fun play style that can be quite a challenge sometimes. In a way, being able to recover magicka through heavy attacks would take away some of that challenge, but I'd rather have the option to be able to do that than not.

I remember months ago I was pick pocketing a dark elf in Vivic city member for the thieves guild and the guy caught me. Dude summoned a blue glowing sword and started attacking me. I was very much surprised because I had never seen that in ESO. I knew right then that we'd get that as a weapon skill line eventually. I'm willing to bet the new big thing in the upcoming Skyrim chapter will be conjured swords or 1-Handed + Runes learned at Winterhold College.

well with Skyrim being the next chapter if they chose to add a new class it'll prob be drunk naked barbarian bare handed bear wrestler with milk drinker morphs. But I would love a non-magical stave weapon, spear or 1h and rune class or skill line please.

so far they have alternated a new class and a new skill / crafting line which means its time for a skill and/or crafting line...everyone and their mother is expecting to see winterhold in skyrim and i doubt they can leave it out... And that means that a winterhold themed skill line seems likely which means 1h+spell or spell crafting could be a thing...

I don´t think that´s correct, there have been at least some patch versions when magDKs were pretty great (anything that kills me is per definition great and OP ;)). And regen spamming templars have not been seen as weak afaik.

I guess some people just don´t like it since in melee you spend more of the stamina resource when blocking and rolling?

Anyway, 'melee magicka' is the archetype that is missing from ESO (well, that, and spears, and flails, and, and...). It is a bit boring to rely so heavily on the staff which is of course also fundamentally a ranged weapon.

I would love to see a magicka melee fighter, with a ward for blocking and a magical weapon. They were fun to play in Skyrim. Wouldn´t be too hard to implement anyway since the animations are already there, they just have to create magical objects to go with them.

Oh man a magicka melee skill line would be awesome. And you dont even need to conjure weapons, all it needs is to let the rune change the main hand melee weapon to return magicka as while light or heavy attack and we're good to go.

The weapon line has been datamined. And why wouldnt the engine be able to handle it? Its just a weapon line.

Spellcrafting has been datamined years ago, yet it’s only existing in the game files. So I’d say sometimes between now and never... unfortunately.

The game needs more Magicka weapons and Spear clearly wouldn’t be one.

hybrid builds are dead. I doubt ZOS care to ever bring it back, this image is likely from a scrapped mechanic planned for original launch.

It's the sad reality of the current combat mechanics, numerically speaking, to bring back stat hybrids propperly you need another tamriel-unlimited level reshuffle of the equations.

This game really doesn’t need more melee stuff either. Magicka / healing / tanking weapon with ranged combat is what we need. More than enough melee stuff in game already. :)

I know 1h + Rune might be Melee as well but... Magicka melee weapon wouldn’t be the worst honestly. So yes a Spear could work in that regard, if it’s indeed Magicka Melee.

Based on that datamined pictures both restoration staff and 1h+shield does not exist in the game. It was not skill line that was datamined it's just 1 icon in old file. I think people created way too much fuss around one random datamined picture without any context. It may be also old design for the game where 1h+rune was initial idea connecting designs of resto staff and s&b but later ZoS scratched those plans and turned 1h+rune into 1h+shield and resto staff. There is many possible reasons why that icon is in the game files but people choose only one reason that it definietly has to be skill line which was and still is planned.

true...at the same time, devs usually have tried to implement things in the game that were requested often...they already said that a new weapon line would be difficult for a variety of reasons (one being that you would have to recreate new weapons for all the existing styles and it would change the loot tables) - but this is not the case for 1h+spell...as it could basically use existing 1h weapon models and simply work with passive bonuses / changes in the skill line if you dont equip another weapon in the second hand... so thats why i think IF we see a new weapon line, this one is most likely...

Also so far they always have alternated a new class with new crafting / skill lines for chapters...if they keep this up (and they seem to be falling into a certain rythm and keep doing the same type of content, etc.) than we would get a new skill line and or crating / weapon etc. this next chapter

Problem is You would still need to put something in Your second hand. Because without it You would have just one one-handed item in Your weapon slots and that would cripple that skill line the same way 2 handed weapons were crippled for long time and counted as 1 item which caused inability to for example wear 5-5-2 gear combos. ZoS would have to implement whole new mechanic that would recognize wheter You have one or two one handed weapons and would count it towards 1 or 2 item slots based on that or 1 handed weapons would have to be redesigned completly and always count as 2 items but then dual wield off-hand and shield slots wouldn't count as item slots. Both solutions sounds wierd.

To avoid them ZoS would have to add new items called runes that would fill second slot in 1h+rune combo. And that would also cause additional implementations , changes of drop rates , redesign of unique weapons in specific parts of content (like DSA , BRP etc.) and lot more. Sounds like a lot of mess. Also that would be wierd if we would have 1 handed weapons in 3 separate skill lines.
