When do you stop? How high is high enough?

Well, I used to have 30 characters in Wildstar. Every single one had an unique look and fresh backstory, but I only really got to play about 25 of them. So I guess 24 would be just about right for me, unless they introduce a new race or class. ;)

Let me check where I am at right now:

    Breton / F / Nightblade / mag / DC / vamp
    Bosmer / F / Nightblade / stam / AD / ww
    Khajiit / M / Nightblade / stam / EP
    Argonian / F / Nightblade / mag / EP / vamp

    Redguard / F / Templar / stam / DC / ww
    Dunmer / F / Templar / mag / EP
    Altmer / F / Templar / mag / AD

    Orc / F / Warden / stam / DC
    Argonian / F / Warden / mag / EP
    Nord / F / Warden / stam / EP / ww

    Dunmer / F / Dragonknight / mag / DC
    Nord / F / Dragonknight / stam / EP
    Bosmer / F / Dragonknight / stam / AD

    Imperial / F / Sorcerer / stam / AD
    Altmer / F / Sorcerer / mag / AD / vamp
    Orc / M / Sorcerer / stam / DC

    Argonian / M / Necromancer / mag / EP
    Khajiit / F / Necromancer / stam / AD

As you can see, I'm still missing a bunch. I'm at max nightblades (it's so damn versatile class, they can "be" anything from a street brawler to a sniper to a vampire cultist), but I'd definitely need a male Imperial necromancer (a thin and swarthy guy like Jafar from Aladdin), a stamina Khajiit female (not sure about the class yet, but totally an army sergeant, Sharpe's Rifles style), an Altmer male (probably a templar; definitely heavy armor and shield), and a short, plump Orc merchant guy to go with the backpack hog pet. ;) The rest I'll figure out eventually.

Oh, and a Nord dude. For no particular reason, but I like what I see when I switch my Nord warden to male in the character editor... so she's gonna get a dumb twin brother. Maybe a warden healer, because I need someone to wear the Priest of the Green robe. I originally bought it for her, but she looks so damn well in that blue-and-white tavern maid dress. ;)

This is endgame, ladies and gentlemen. :p

Those are not mutually exclusive by any means.

For example I have a Khajiit Stamina Nightblade that has a:
1 PvE Tank setup (or more, he can borrow the gear from the DK)
3 PvE DD setups with variations (various combos of VO or WM with TFS or Leviathan and either Velidreth, Stormfist, Kra'gh)
1 PvP DD setup (Eternal Hunt + Spriggan or Sheer Venom + Selene or Velidreth or Bloodspawn)
1 Thief setup - class & race passives and skills are advantageous, the gear does the rest: Night Terror + Night Mother's Embrace reduce sneak radius to such an extent I can basically sit on top NPCs with the eye fully closed. If I get caught and they attack I can just sit and heal while they punch me and kill themselves from Night Terror procs - I get no extra bounty and I can loot the corpse afterwards.
I also had a PvE WW DD setup planned, but Sorcerer and Templar are better suited for it. But I have the gear so I can transfer it and implement that if I want.

He is also fully trained as crafter, and has all reagent & runes properties discovered and 9 traits researched on everything - this buffs the master writ drop rate significantly.

You can do as many as you like with 375 skill points and a few hundred pieces of gear.

I don't bother with farming materials specifically since I do writs on every character and what I get from surveys monthly is more than enough. For surveys character speed makes little difference since I reset them by mounting and riding a short lap. On average about I get around ~1.8m worth of materials for about 4 hours of grabbing surveys, post refinement (or more if it's Craglorn, because of Nirncrux). The refined materials I use for the next month of writs (sometimes I have to buy the difference for some, but they're cheap), I stack the upgrade materials and sell them when the prices spike, usually when a new chapter or DLC is launched and people want to upgrade new gear.

Now, I already have maxed out character slots (so 18 of them), which allows me to have 3 characters of each class. However, I could really use 6 more slots, so 4 per class, so I could have a tank, a healer, a stamina dps, and a magicka dps of each class. At the moment I have to share the role of a healer and a magicka dps on the same character, but this requires too many compromises with builds for any harder content to be optimal. So please, could we please have 6 more maximum character slots?

Given that the game is now 5+ years old and folk have been playing and creating multiple characters in ever increasing numbers, it would seem only fair and practical for ZOS to increase this number.

People may wish to take note of (and participate) in my poll here, linked below, which somewhat shows the scale of the problem. Significant numbers of players, experienced, paying players, like to have a LOT of characters.

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/493216/how-many-characters-do-you-have/p1

Over 50% of the forum responses, indicate folk have more than 10 characters. ZOS need to give more free characters, and expand the total number of characters available.

People on the forum are not that representative for the game population in general. Usually people who are interested in the game more than casually come here: want to report errors, find builds, ask for guidance etc. It's hard to say anything about the "silent majority" that says nothing or is not that concerned about the game. For example people who play 2-3 hours a week will probably not have that much time to level alts.

My main concern about constantly increasing the number of characters is database cluttering. This has been somewhat hinted by ZOS - as part of the improvement plan they want to place inactive accounts in "cold storage" to streamline access for the active users, which is common sense IMO. They also said that the EU-PC login issues a few weeks ago were caused by database issues. If I were to chose between more character slots and faster login, I would chose the latter without blinking.

Obviously the forum population is not generally representative of the ESO player base and I have made this exact point in a number of contexts over the years. But the forum population do more than likely represent a reasonable snap shot of the long time, PAYING customers that ZOS needs to keep.

By all means, deactive inactive accounts. This is a separate issue from the number of characters an account has though.

Its also a minefield unless managed appropriately. One of my friends for instance, has sunk a lot of money and time into ESO, has multiple characters and used to spend hours a day playing, along with myself. He has not however played ESO for probably approaching a year now and is focused on other games. Will he return in future, almost certainly... if his account is deleted, that would seem utterly unacceptable. I guess if there is an account recovery process this could work.
