Out of all roles, I love to tank. I built a NecroNordTank and it’s so much fun! When I DPS, I fall asleep at my controller, but when I tank...there’s so much going on that I stay vigilant! I love it!
Anybody else out there prefer tanking to any other role?
Plus...it’s fun when the group wipes bc of an error on their part...and BOOM! Multi res :)

I came late to tonking, really only completing tonk characters capable of completing vet content in the last year or so.

Prior to this I very much mained healing, with some respectable dpsing as well. When healing got nerfed and changes made healing less required or important, I went heavily into tonking and have more or less completed 3 different tonks this year. Warden Nord, DK Imperial, and my personal favourite, a Necromancer Orc - tonk/dps hybrid.

Is tonking my favourite role? Nah, I like all the roles. That said at present healing feels deeply unrewarding right now because most decent players can self sustain through most content, even in vet. So I am playing lots of dps and lots of tonking, with tonking probably my preference at the moment.

Have to agree on the ulti group res. There are few more enjoyable feelings than resing my whole team to prevent a wipe and the necro does it best :)

I started tanking because I was the DK in my group of IRL friends and also grew to love it. I can DPS and heal, but I love being in control of the fight. I like being the one to pick the placement of the fight, to gather all the mobs, and see how efficitent I can make it for my team members. No one controls the battlefield better than a tank.

And yeah, I love the moments where its like "This is why you want a real tank!" Whether its tanking Fungal Grotto 2 slowly so my lowbie DDs could actually experience how the mechanics work or reviving the whole group after they fail the Darkshade Caverns 2 heal check on the Engine Guardian's poison phase, those moments make tanking very fun.

I loved tanking before ZOS introduced that nice kind of lag in Elsweyr when pots don't work despite sound of pot and ranged taunt doesn't work despite there was sound of taunt. Yeah, there is rather small percent that will happen, like 5% maybe but that is often enough to wipe whole raid and kill the mood, so I stopped tanking until ZOS will do something with server performance.

Oh and -20% of ST dps and -50% aoe dps next patch look tempting too, your group will suck to deal with dps checks and you will be the one to blame, good luck ^^

P.S> just joking, tanking is fun despite what many think

Tanking was the last role i tried. Its harder to build and get accustomed to, but its REALLY simple when you know the process. The only downside is you just cannot quest as a Tank build.

    I absolutely love tanking.
As somebody already said, for solo questing it's easy to simply have some spare gear and swap to DD spec with Dressing Room if you're on PC.

What really bums me out is, I can't (efficiently) PvP with all my attributes spent into Health.
And it's a real pain to constantly change mundus, attributes and/or CPs to go into PvP or do my daily BG.

I had some great times tanking, and some bad ones. I want to turn my main character (Imperial DK) into a full time tank, but because he is my main I play all new content with him, and try to get most achievements, so I also want to leave him as a stamina DD to make questing go by faster.

I have a Necromancer I plan on turning into a tank but the thought of leveling Undaunted again is so off putting. I am waiting for the group finder changes next patch, hoping I can level Undaunted as a DD.

I've been tanking a lot for the past year. When I started out, I spent a lot of gold to make it "complete" before I tanked the harder stuff. I have fun with it. The build is exactly the way I like it and never fails me.

I'll post my build later if anyone is interested. I have exceded my data because my trash phone company has no unlimited plan. You can look them up on UESP build editor and search "Swamp Haven Builds". I switched Magma Armor to Barrier for most contest for the recovery and for when a newbie decideds to stand in the bad areas.

I have a tank of every class and I used to love to tank.
It was my favorite thing. I even started a theorycraft around saptanking and was dipping into the deep end... then I took several updates to the knee.

Still, I’d rather tank or heal than ever dps.

I've loved tanking ever since I first started playing MMOs. Haven't really gotten into end game tanking in ESO quite yet, though, as I'm still a bit new and haven't decided 100% on my build and class. Seems like every time I think I've found a class to main, I find something I like better. At this rate, I'll need to level a tank of every class before I can decide who to gear up first.

You can quest, its just over land so not particularly demanding or dangerous. Content can take a little longer but its not too onerous to swap out a couple of tonk skills for dps skills, and/or swap out a tonk set for, for instance, a proc damage set, these relatively simple changes enable you to quest with your tonk :)

But to be fair, I dont really bother, lol.

Also 'fell into' tank role amongst my group; usually ending up MH as well.. honestly though, it's because I'm shite at dps xD

It is A LOT of fun piling things up (when they let me!) for friends to burn down, and sometimes being last khajiit standing to finish the fight.

    I loved tanking in WoW.

    I hate tanking in ESO.

Taunting a boss and bringing gear/skill that support the group is not my idea of tanking. In WoW I had a lot of duties, but I was also part of the DPS race and at times I could even beat the DPS classes (Protection Paladin). I used to main tank, but it's so boring in ESO.

Tanking is fun as long you have decent DDs. Since I'm forced to PUG, I have decided to run only DD.

Endgame tanking gear is basically universal. By all means have as many as you can stand to level and share the gear. Its also quite a flexible role in terms of build - a lot of little tweaks between each different raid.

To each their own at the end of the day. Other MMOs where the tank is just a meaty dps I find to be far more tedious.

Fact is - if you’re bored tanking in ESO - you’re not being imaginative enough. There’s always an extra step you can take to help your team. I will take that level of control in an encounter than the pseudo-dps tanks of WoW or FF14 any day of the week.

I enjoy tanking quite a bit. With very few exceptions I've made it a point to tank on every character that I have.

If you're falling asleep as a DD, I'd suggest harder content. If you're falling asleep in vSCP as a DD then this game is a little too easy for you.

I think they were talking about just leveling and doing quests to switch roles but build a tank. When I am leveling tank skills quickly, I have one or two DPS skills with the rest tanking skills and work a grind zone. Skills are maxed quickly and easily. The game quests are simple with this setup too. World bosses and group content are another story, but this is about basic quests and leveling skills. It is very true that you’d swap CP, attributes, etc to fully set up for DPS. Heck, I change CP and gear around for specific group content at times, especially if going Vet HM.

Until I’m sitting in Banished Cells 2 kiting a dozen Deadroth around cause the DPS is pitiful.

Or getting overrun by a dozen shadow copies of king Narlimier in depths of Malatar because again, the DPS isn’t stellar.

Or any number of other dungeons that wouldn’t be so bad if the DPS was even just ok.

I do love tanking, I have been doing it recently with groups offriends and guilies ONLY. I gave up tanking back when I only played solo because nothing is worse than pugging as a tank. at least as a DPS you can carry a group.

damn people really get salty, it blows my mind.. were all adults here, I hope.

and on topic, I love tanking but I hate pug tanking. I can carry the group as a DPS but as a tank I dont want to stand there and watch my teammates light attack spamming a boss for 20 min. so I only tank with friends. or ( i hate to be that guy) If i have to pug for a quick run if the first boss goes poorly, I'm out. you can tell how good the dps is on the first boss even if there is no deaths/ wipes.

EDIT: you can teach mechanics in a pug, but you cant teach good dps in a pug run

That fun, I play tank when I don't want to run after everyone as healer, feel so peaceful to play tank.. Love this part.
But I still prefer heal, need dynamic gameplay (in the few content we are needed).
DPS is boring in this game, learn rotation => apply, 0 dynamic, 0 reflex needed.
Tank is in the middle, I find it good for relax and it's not boring as hell like DPS.

    Not I.

I loved tanking. I loved the feeling of “Get behind me! I’ll handle this!” And “You call that a punch?? Against my impenetrable shield?!” And “Your puny hits barely scratch at my life force!” I loved tanking big bosses on my tiny character the most. Grothdarr, the Abomination, Lord Warden and Saint Olms the Just were my favorite. SO satisfying see them wind up, and I block, and KLANG they’re disoriented and more determined to try to squash me! Oh when we had passive dodge and I built a dodge tank - whoosh can’t touch this! Like Odysseus between the fingers of a clumsy cyclops. Neener neener pumpkin eater!

    I loved that feeling.

    Zos ruined it though.
