Why are the average players in this game so bad?

Game doesn't adequately prepare you for the required tasks
Most of them just run around spamming light attacks with a bow, or heavy attacking with 30 pets.

My suspicion is online guides combined with power levelling.
They tell you to get X, Y, Z and people blindly run out and get it and power level.
What they don't remember is that for new players the levelling process is meant to introduce you to skills and aspects of the game slowly so you don't get overwhelmed while you LEARN everything.
So people get the builds they are told to get, power level to access them, and then don't really know either how to use them or adapt to the game in general.
Thing is, many people are here primarily for the "Elder Scrolls" part, not so much for the "Online" part. They are not interested in the "Online" content as such, they're only doing it because devs are trying to force them into it with "incentives" (read: by locking stuff they do want, behind the content they don't want).

Some people are here for the intellectual property. Those are PvE players here for the story and ZOS is pretty careful to make solo story content accessible.
It's when they force casuals to do group stuff to access the story that the problem starts. Craglorn group quests, DLC dungeons, etcetera. And then when they try to get help for group stuff they encounter non-story-players who just want to zoom and they don't even get to experience the story.
Dungeons really need a proper Story mode for solo-ing to go at your own pace to explore and experience the story. But that's not directly related to being good or not.

I dunno I'm pretty bad myself. I think it's more like they don't take it so serious cause you know, vidyja game
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

Bad in what way? Role playing? Tanking? Healing? DPS? Crafting? Etc.

Most people are in the game to relax and have fun. That is the average player. Nothing bad about that.

    What they said.
    Favourite NPC: Wine-For-All
Mostly PC-EU , with a lonely little guy on NA.

Its the community. No one is really teaching anyone anything. I join a dungeon run and most times its a fast dash to keep up to the guy with CP 810. Low level chars are dying. They dont care keep running forward pulling 30 mobs at a time. The guides that are out there are put together in a way that does not explain anything. They talk to you like you have 5 years of background knowledge. Ask the community for answers and they call you a newb and go look it up. Most new players have to figure it out on their own. This community is great if you know what you are doing. This community stinks at helping new one learn the game.

In EQ1, new gamers were giving time to learn the mechanics. People would explain what pitfalls they were about to face. Takes no more then 1-3 lines of text to do that. Most people take more time to type out how bad the newb they teamed with in guild chat then over the few lines it would take to give them a fair fight. This community is very unforgiving.

The question presupposes that average players are bad. The definition of bad in this case is based on a view of the game that may not be shared by the average player. For many, it's more rpg than anything else.

    Not enough incentive to improve

I noticed in PVP the average player is REALLY bad in 1v1, 1v2 but really good in xv1. This is because the game is catered to zerg/group. Even in PVE

Check out Xynode's All About Mechanics dungeon guides. He explains them very well.

Everyone I meet, or at least 75% are nice. Stay out of normal dungeons, that's where are the mean people are.

If you are having fun playing the game you are good.

If it is a grind or causes frustration you are bad.

Bad players have simply forgot how to have fun in the game.

theres is not one person in the game nor forum that is "bad"
what is wrong is that people think that if others dont play the same way as they do, and if they dont think the same way as they do about eso and how eso should be played and what armor and weapon type and skill points or anything in eso is different then the way THEY do it, then according to them that equals a "bad or average or stupid player"
its a horrible reality, but thats the truth.
there is no wrong way to play eso.

This line of thinking is basically why there are so many bad players on ESO

    Skill cap is high
Other - this is not an esport or highly competitive game.
    It is an MMORPG.

That is pretty much irrelevant as the question is in the context of this game. What OP notes is very relevant, that even the average player is very far from the top players in the game vs games like WoW, FF, and SWTOR ( and I am not talking about WoW esports either)

As far as within the game there is competitive aspects as there are BGs and even PvE has leaderboards.
