Protip: It's very easy to go into the settings for both Steam and Discord to turn off starting with Windows. Then you can start them up whenever you want.

Both can also be shut down by right-clicking the tray icon (down by the clock in the taskbar) and choosing the Quit or Exit option. Presto, no intrusions! B)

Steam is always first an online gaming store and launching platform. Its utility as a social platform for gaming is limited. I also dont need or want a thousands long steam friends list. It lacks any sense of Guild related functionality. Discord while not perfect has better flexibility and has web and mobile functionality. It's relatively simple to use its core functions and easy to invite people.

I only ever turn Steam on when I absolutely can't avoid it because a game I want to play will only run with that jumped up DRM running at the same time. I turn it off again as soon as I can without getting kicked out of a game. (In some cases this is as soon as the game has started, sometimes I have to keep Steam running until I'm done.)

I appreciate piracy is an issue, and I'm in favour of companies trying to protect their right to sell their products, but trying to convince gamers that DRM is a super-fun bonus feature gets on my nerves, especially when I'm reminded that some people fell for it to the point where they're now praising Valve for taking advantage of the same developers who are just trying to get started in a tough market the only way they can now one company has a monopoly on PC gaming.

I don't particular like voice chat programs either, but at least I only have to turn Discord on when I actually want to use it, or I can run it through my phone and not have to worry about it interfering with the game.

But like other people said if you don't want to use Discord just don't join a guild which requires it, and if you can't find one which requires Steam instead you can start one. According to your own numbers you should have no trouble finding members - with 80% of people always running Steam and so many features you're confident everyone will love I'm sure people will be rushing to join.

I hate Steam, but I also hate Discord.

One of the few benefits of actually being on the console. No need for Steam, and a lot of the guilds use Band app instead (we already have voice chat which is basically the only reason to use Discord).

OP is incorrect about this being a Steam game. The game was not originally released on Steam and most players do not have their ESO game tied to Steam so the overlay is pointless.

So the logic OP attempts to put forward fails right there. It is also irrelevant to the topic what Steam did for gaming.

OP is trying to force all players to link their ESO game to Steam and I think most of us are not going to bow down and give Steam control of every aspect of our gaming lives.

Steam is about 10% of the PC Base.

And, I dont know what discord servers your on, but I have yet to see a bit or bunch of SPAM on the 5 or 6 I regularly use.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    1. Individual players choose what they want to use. You don't want to use Discord? Don't. You want to use Steam? Go for it. Nothing stopping you. No reason to be angry at other people for doing what they want when it doesn't affect you.
    2. ESO isn't a Steam game. It's also on Xbox, Playstation, and by itself on PC. It was a non-Steam game before it was released on Steam, remember. Using Steam is fine, but saying that ESO is a Steam game is not a reason to use Steam functions with it.
    3. Steam and Discord aren't the only options. My guild has had a Discord, Teamspeak, Xbox club, Band, and even a facebook group at some time or another. They're all different, and are good for different things, so why limit people's options?

Well, I'm not sure what classifies as SPAM, but I think the OP is suggesting that a lot of his ESO-related Discord channels do not talk about ESO...instead it's non-related topics. So with that context, I have had the same experience which is something that drew me away as well. If I'm on an ESO channel, I want to talk about ESO. If I want to bs with other people about unrelated topics or just shoot the bird poop, I have real life friends for that.

I am all for discord as it just provides more.

But buying the game though steam a few years ago was a great decision as back then they gave you an activation key. Then they started linking existing or new accounts to steam. This provided an opportunity for a lot of players to use their existing game key to play without steam and link a new account to steam with no extra cost. So at least we got that.

Valve, who owns Steam, is just a money-hungry company who doesn’t give 2 craps about the things it does. I wouldn’t support it. Discord isn’t perfect, but it works pretty well and is free as well. And is way easier to use.

Pretty much this. As I stated earlier this is not really a Steam game as the game was not originally available on Steam. Even the purchases after it hit Steam have mostly avoided that distributer. It just does not make sense to go Steam when you do not have to.

To those complaining about Discord, no one makes you use it. It is a choice. Of course that choice means you will not raid with teams that require it but that is still a choice.

ESO is not a steam game. It's a game that is also on steam. Most people I know play through the regular launcher and those that I know who play through steam only complain about it because of the frequent issues that keep happening.

I've played ESO since B14 and never, ever, used Steam .. what am I doing wrong?

I hate Steam, always have since Bethesda forced me to use it to play Skyrim, simply as a DRM mechanic as far as I can see, I'm perfectly happy playing ESO via its Launcher and using Discord if/when I need voice.

You left out the outrageously high commissions game developers must pay Steam on everything they sell
    This!

There's mega-hate for Epic and to some extent I agree with it, but one thing Epic did was to show Steam for the greedy company they are .. and one which has wasted vast sums of money skimmed off developers with their failed software and hardware projects.

@Pino - "The most neutral/fair Store (even as a little indie Developer your game can become AAA)" - LMAO, Steam gut them for 30% which is outrageous for the service the dev. gets, I applaud Epic's far fairer 12% and wish them all the best at attracting Indie developers away from Steam.

Never understood why anyone ever bought ESO on steam. Basically all you got was another layer to cause problems from extra lag to outright connection issues. If I had to guess I would imagine the steam numbers for ESO compared to PC without steam are pretty low overall.
