Stop using Discord, its a Steam Game (Feedback)

Pino
First: Sorry for my bad English
I am not a headless Steam Fanboy but a Guy who was born on Vulcan. Let me tell you something.

Its about the logic
Every time you want to join a group of player, a guild or other community's its always the same: "Join our Discord Server". But what do you have from it? The annoying bots? The huge chats you don't want to read? Almost 95% consists of things we are not interested in but we have to read to get the 5% important information's. Why we should use a another Software if 80% running Steam in the background or even using the Overlay or the 20% (and every day more) who owns the Game on Steam? Above all, Discord is just a new store nothing else. This was the plan behind, this was the only one reason why you get a free chat. (not the good-human thing as they once did)

A good monopolizing
Everyone complained about Steam but in how many positive ways Steam changed the world of gamer? Without Steam we would life in the stone age. What ever you need as a Gamer OR as a Developer/Publisher you will get "free" on Steam.
  • The most neutral/fair Store (even as a little indie Developer your game can become AAA)
  • The end of Publisher, Management and Server costs (= no risk and Game Sites/Forums/Servers are always on even after 50 years)
  • Steamworks API (= Features for modern Gaming like auto join Friends, Mods, etc. etc.)
  • Community Hub (Forum, Guides, Artworks, Screenshots, Videos, Streams, News for every game on one place)
  • Activity Feed (The best Feed to track your Friends, Developers and Game Updates = save time)
  • Around 50GB and more for Screenshot, Artwork and Savegame (= no more image file host)
  • A profile to show your whole gamer life in a own way (show your screenshots etc.)
  • Steam Overlay (everything you need to avoid ALT+TAB + the best Game-pad Emulation and more coming even for non-Steam Games)
  • Steam Groups (All you need for your Guild: Add-Free Site, Calendar, Updates to the Members Feed, Forum, Chats with Voice
  • Steam Chats (Simpler but helpful as Discord, can be used with Groups)
Monopolizing is the only logical way in a modern digital world. Its not about fight again it its about how to use it right. Valve has the most most exemplary monopoly and we can be very happy that not Amazon or Apple have this mono-pol. The 30% is nothing against that what Publishers get or what you have to pay for your Community. We all benefit from the 30% we have to pay extra for games. Also Discord are not millions of local stores we have to save, only a few jobs who earn also too much money (for the the people who cry about the jobs).

Why you should use the Steam Overlay in ESO
As I say, many of use already use Steam. Buyed on Steam or as Non-Steam Game.
The simplest way to begin a Voice Chat (it is much easier to to convince Voice-shy people 😋 )
Also we get important (and not ALL like on Discord) information about in-Guild things even when we play other games.
Simple take and upload cute Screenshots!

Feedback to the Developers
Please Developers, be smart, give us all the features and benefit from the money you give to Steam! Please use the Steam APIs:
  • Friend List: use the new more detailed Status (Dungeon? Character? Zone?), let us join directly to a friends ingame Group.
  • Steam Chat: Add someone to Chat or Friends via ingame-option or link. One-click invite for In-game Groups. (= PC Voice, All possible and free with the Steamworks API)
  • Game Updates/Download: Remove the Launcher and do updates via Steam + Language set = actual 25GB less to download.
  • Steam Workshop for the Addon folder (would be epic and more then simple to script but Steam owners exclusive 😥 )
  • Hub: Post more important Updates to Steam and users newsfeed.
  • Steam Overlay: Allow Chat links from friends or groups to open them in the overlay. Allow Addons to call the Overlay and few Steam Chat API. (would be also epic 😍 )
PS: I also loved the intentions behind Discord but I also love the modern progress. This is not about "This is better". Its about what is logical helpfully for all. And Yes I know, the new Steam Voice are not real bug-free at the moment.

You left out the outrageously high commissions game developers must pay Steam on everything they sell.

You're right... Steam engages in the egregious behavior of a monopoly. There is a reason why large game publishers and other entities are creating their own distribution channels. It's to get away from the outright highway robbery of Steam's blood-sucking 'agreements'.

You should be ashamed of yourself for supporting Steam.

I installed Discord because it was required for a guild I joined. I ended up removing Discord from my Start Up programs, so it won't start up automatically whenever I reboot my computer and run in the background. It's annoying as hell. If I ever do want or need to use Discord, I'll start it up myself, and shut it down completely when I'm done. I want to play the game, not spend all of my play time in chats.

    No, thanks.

Steam is clumsy and unreliable, even for community discussions.

    I prefer Discord.

as much as i dislike guild discord servers, discord is a monopoly of its own; the only self proclaimed all functional chat room/server based communication system dedicated to "gaming".

    Nope.

    Why?

First, Steam has left its social aspects to largely wither on the vine. Compared to Discord, it's clunky in terms of UI. Tying emotes and profile features to Steam achievements and activities to force participation has elements of profiteering, lock-in, and attention-whoreing in various combinations. A large number of Steam users just don't care about it any more, and it's gone nowhere. To a large number of gamers, Steam is essentially a storefront, full-stop.

Second, Discord is designed from the ground-up as a social platform with guild/focused-group needs front-and-center. It's relatively simple and straightforward, and allows groups with a common interest to create forums, chatrooms and information feeds tailored to their users. If bots and chats in a Discord group is annoying you, A. the group's moderators need to step up their work and put some effort into their setup, and B. you may need to go into your own Discord settings for that group to tailor how you interact with it.

TL;DR version: Steam would have to largely burn down and re-build their whole social system to be as useful as Discord. Given how little effort they've put into it for years, it's probably not likely to happen. But then, they don't have to. They're very good at the marketing side, and they're doing what they're best at.

Bought ESO long before it was for sale on steam.
Login by steam has loads of issues, has you not seen all the problems for steam users logging in.

ZOS would loose lots of money forcing all over on steam.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Only use Discord when I have to.
    Still use TeamSpeak mostly.

My guild tried starting a Steam guild. It went exactly nowhere. The Discord exploded. :D

Perhaps I'm biased, but I belong to a pretty awesome guild, with a Discord that's really well-managed. Your mileage may very.

If you don't like discord, don't join a guild that requires it and if you can't find a steam guild, start one yourself.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to force everyone else onto steam just to satisfy yourself. Around here, Steam is not all that well liked due to Steam specific log in issues that seem to come up more often that you'd think. You won't catch me EVER playing this game on Steam if I have any other choice.

    1. Discord is widely used amongst gamers, especially for communication, so it's no wonder they ask people to join them there.
    2. While steam is a somewhat reliable platform for bundling your games in one place, it's slow and clunky for everything else. I do NOT recommend running their overlay in ESO, or any overlay for that matter because it impacts performance too much. Overlays are stupid and bloated, and you simply don't need them.
    3. Why you would use steam if you didn't have to is beyond me. Not only is it slow and throttles your network more than bittorrent, but ESO has serious issues logging people in via the steam client compared to natively.

If Steam is paying you to say these things then you should notify us.

you mean the steam that doesnt let people log into the game every few weeks? xD

I have more friends from various games (also some browser games), RL friends and ESO guild mates on discord than i have friends on steam. Steam groups arent rly working out too good andchat is kinda bad.

And even if discord is selling games too, good for them, but i wont buy them anyway. Only reason i have steam installed is cos some games are bound to it and some games i got from sales and never played xD

I prefer anyany standalone game without a steam/uplay/origin launcher with an additional discord for communication over steam

and if you wanna promote something, rather pick gog galaxy instead of steam xD

I am one of those that play's MMO's directly from my PC to the gaming company instead of using a third party program like Steam to play. Why would I want to add Steam overhead onto my PC?

And I'm sorry, but your laundry list of items, i just read it as "Big Brother is watching you" and your logic for selling it isnt working on me, or for me.

I hear a lot of players complaining in multiple MMO's over the years about payment issues with Steam and not getting stuff in game, or getting billed twice for something.
Correcting issues is further complicated when a third party is involved.
I can get issues resolved much faster and to my satisfaction when there is only my Credit card company and the end game company involved.

To summarize. Please god no! I think I would quit ESO if I was forced to play thru steam.

I've been playing ESO through Steam every day since 08/28/2017, and have never had a day when I couldn't log in. Yes, there were two or three times during the last 2 years when I couldn't log in for an hour or so, but ZOS got it fixed PDQ.
