That said I'd rather other players be trying to romance NPCs than me.

Concerning the RPG part of MMORPG, what if the Writers provided a selection of Romanceable NPCs with new lines of Dialogue and even questlines that progress the relationship. A new game mechanic that allows the vestige to bond with an NPC, complete a personal story questline, and unlock special options such as making them a version of the Brotherhood Bequeather, or a special "Assistant" you can place in your house.

We already have lines of dialogue where the Vestige flirts, heavily, with Naryu. Thats a start.

I'd love to see it, doubt it would happen. We have 12 yr olds that play this game. They don't even want The Lusty Argonian Maid excerpts on the forums. When they said the game was mature, they should have kept it that way and made the parents account for their children playing it. And if I had to pick someone, it would be that rogue Jakarn. Ah yes, Steve Blum. Love that man, love that voice.

And The Lusty Argonian Maid ain't got nothin' on The Real Barenziah. Actually, I think The Real Barenziah is far more x-rated. At any rate, Elder Scrolls has always had a mature element and ESO brands the game mature. They should stick with that. Parents need to account for their kids but honestly a 12 year old with computer access and who has started to hit puberty has probably seen far worse than anything Elder Scrolls can throw at him or her.

Oh gods, The Real Barenziah is a doozy. It far surpasses Lusty Argonian Maid. I mean, Dunmer are known for being promiscuous, so it's not like what happened surprised anyone there, but it definitely shocks the reader.

I just went and read this. Dang. Not what I was expecting, but waaaaaaaay more adult and dark themes than I expected.

If you see me anywhere. Know that I am sitting back with a bag of popcorn, watching as ESO burns the goodwill of its player base with practices that only disrespects the players time like it did to me and many others...

If a game does not respect your time, best thing to do is move on from it and find something else.

Eh, I've known about Barenziah since probably Daggerfall. Don't remember her in Arena - but dayum that was a very long time ago.... Yeah.... talk about dark. And not just "dark elf". That was nearly as ick-making as my own family history (nope, don't ask, it was.... not.... nice a couple hundred years back).

So no surprise - TES has always been the "bloody edge" when it comes to lore and background. Really.... if you've played Daggerfall.... you know.

This thread makes me sad... They're not real people, they can't love you back! And coding an NPC to love you is some next level narcissism. Imagine if they were real people and had no choice in the matter, that's called an arranged marriage. A love not of their own volition is not worth having bc it's not love, it's ownership. I may be getting carried away but it's not this particular idea I dislike but this is not a Mindset that should be facilitated in anticipation of AI's becoming common in the future. Whether they are human or not, a being that has achieved sentience, that can think and feel their own thoughts and emotions should not be subject to subjugation. The rule of love is that it starts and ends with Consent.

Have none of you seen West World!?

Y'all need to branch out and make some friends.

I don't think I've ever read anything so off-base to date on these forums, aside from someone abusing the theory of flow to justify the guild trader system. There is *no* difference between an MMO NPC and one in a single-player game. They are all scripted pixels. They all respond in ways coded by the devs and written by the game's writers. They are already pawns in the story the devs want to tell. To behave as if NPCs in any game have some kind of dignity is...odd, to put it mildly.

Look at what we already do to NPCs. We kill them. We can sacrifice them to Daedra. We have a choice to leave people in eternal torment. We rob them, Blade of Woe them, intimidate them, convince them to make terrible changes in their lives. And yet developing deeper friendships with these NPCs is somehow more warped?

How creepy or non-creepy a game romance is can be determined by how it's written and executed in the game. Want creepy? Try Skyrim's single-player marriage where you pick a spouse, have a single chat, marry them, then hide them in one of your houses. There they cook for you and bed you. But well-written romances like SWTOR's take you further into the story. Your charcter actually gets to "know" and befriend everyone on your crew (or not, depending on player choice).

It's sad that the issue is so black and white for you. A well-written game or story has the possibility of expanding your horizons. I'm a heterosexual woman who has been married fior 15 years. Things I'll never be include: male, lesbian, bisexual, gay male. Yet I've had the opportunity to play characters of both genders and multiple orientations. I've gotten a tiny feel for what it might be like to be someone other than myself, to see the kind of stories that they might find appealing. Some of my favorite stories haven't been traditional female PC/male NPC at all.

@jainiadral - great post. Misses me for the most part as I've never once in any game had any interest in romancing anything.... male female or whatever.

This is because I'm not interested in romance. I'm VERY long time married (43 years this time.... if I add in the other two... WELL over 50 years of my life). Thing is, I'm not romantic, so when games "go there" I get turned off big time. ESO seems to me to be perfect: If I don't "see' it, I don't have to deal with it.

I really dislike games which push that sort of interaction on me, and I'm very thankful that ESO does not.

Eh, you probably don't want to know how many tries it took me. Besides the three marriages, I estimate at least another 100 men. Some of them short term, some longer.

So yeah. 43 years, considering. I don't expect to make 50, as he's not likely to live that long. Health issues.... of various kinds. Still, I don't regret ONE THING about my life. Not one thing. Regrets are.... the dark side. Don't go there....

Heh, well, I'm usually harsh as sandpaper, but I've got a little teeny weeny corner in my brain that turns to mush with cuteness, sappiness, and just general squee-fangirliness. I try not to show it often, but if I don't indulge it sometimes, I'm a sad, cynical, empty shell of a human being :D

I'll say this about Bioware games in general-- they're usually pretty good about tagging options that'll get you embroiled in the part of the games you don't like. But there are a few that miss it altogether-- the whole "ninjamance" thing you might read about around the webs. Tali in Mass Effect 2 had one of those, as did Liara in ME1. Usually, though, if you don't push the "FLIRT" button, you should be ok :D Then you have neat platonic friendships in most cases.

If the conversation indicators are clearly marked, I don't see that there would be a real issue with including relationships in games. You could leave them behind quite handily if you're not interested. But if you are, it could be a cool option for us sappy suckers :D

Also let's consider, that romance doesn't necessarily mean binding forever. For several gameplay reasons (vows of Mara for example) it would be weird if player could make a NPC her/his lover/spouse. But a short optional romance imbedded into the plot might work, especially with characters like Jakarn (foremost), Darien Gautier, Razum'Da and I guess Naryu Virian too. I mean most of the notable characters we meet aren't ones to stick around anyway. Apart from that the story makes us the typical Western hero traveler who rides into the sunset in the end.

@ArchMikem If it fits the narrative and even prevents ludonarrative dissonance, yes. Also short doesn't necessarily mean meaningless. It could be genuine romantic interest, with just the circumstances adding up. Let's look at Raz for example. I get the feel that even if he fell in love, he would never let it compromise his duty.
