How do you feel using a staff as a Tank?

My cloth-wearing MagWarden healer would tank often.
Plenty of magicka to block with a frost staff. No need for a high stam.
Magicka drop ? Just generate more.
And I could heal myself for whatever damage got through.

Frost staves and tanking for magicka toons are a great fit.

I've been running ice/resto nightblade tank for awhile to level undaunted. Only in dungeons of course, but still there were a lot of runs, including dlc vets. No-single-comment. Nobody paid any attention that s&b is missing and tank does restoheavy attacks on regular basis. I was taunting with inner fire+surprise attack+eledrain to replace pierce armor.

    I run frost/resto in trials :D

Well, you got a very kind trial leaders, I never saw tank without S&B in any of my progression guilds. Backbar maybe very different, but front bar is basically the same always.

I usually take a DPS role and fill in whenever a tank or healer goes down, and then I do a lot of objective running or reviving so the rest of the team can focus on the fight. I tend to be the one doing callouts and directing the group because of that too. It lowers the group damage a little bit, but it really helps the team with consistency. Anyone who has a problem with the utility DPS usually doesn't after the first boss. It's a little harder to play the utility role in vet trials, but I can still play main tank. Frost is a lot better than most give it credit for; it's not the less good S&B most think.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

I use sword/shield front bar and ice/shock staff back bar. With 1h enchants being bad, the destro staff blockade helps me keep a full value debuff on target. Shock staff if off-balance is desired, ice if not.

My first tank was a DK Nord. I had given him a 2h backbar cause I didn't know any better (was only my 3rd character) and I liked the Warrior tank vibe. Eventually I started noticing why they say 2h backbar doesn't do anything for a tank, and so I toyed with the idea of an Ice staff. Well he looked at me and was like "what do you want me to do with this toothpick" and "do you have some plaque that needs tanking". I couldn't tell if he was joking and realized, ok, big dumb Nord probably doesn't know how to use a staff, so I gave him his Great Axe back and enlisted him in the alliance war, where he's been learning to use his build to the fullest, and doing quite well. But he can always backbar a second s&b when he feels like coming out to tank.

Then there's my Templar tank, I've been leveling her destro staff, she still needs to unlock more skills and passives for it to really benefit her, but she's loving it, keeps asking me when I'm gonna let her take it into a dungeon. Like, uh, how bout when you stop re-equiping you s&b backbar every time I wanna solo a world boss you wuss. Been bugging me about wanting to learn to play with a healing staff too so she can "roleplay healer with her friends" whatever that means.. one thing at a time, Lily.

Have a Warden tank too. We're still in the getting to know each stage, but I have a feeling as an Orc Warden from Wrothgar he'll appreciate a lil more ice in his life.

The Frost Staff's heavy attack should be juuuuuuust slightly faster to allow a tank to taunt. Maybe 33%?

It wouldn't ruin PVP, either, because most classes either use Lightning Staff for passive AOE damage increase or Fire Staff for passive single target damage increase. Nobody in PVP uses the Frost Staff's heavy attack for the weak shield or "taunt" on players.
Want to enjoy the game more? Try both PvP (crybabies) and PvE (carebears). You'll get a better perspective on everyone's opinion.

    It's whatever for me.

I play SnB/Frost staff without Tri-focus passive. My tankiness is pretty much the same as it was. It's just one more uptime to keep (elemental blockade). After some adjustments to my build I got used to it.

At least, Decisive on tank now got some meaning. The same is true for resource regaining poisons.

I love staff tanking, but I just wish it weren't the ice staff. I really prefer fire staves in general, though I've heard of illusion as a good alternative.

Another option is to give Weakness to Elements a tanking morph. Perhaps it could serve as the destro equivalent of Pierce Armor, while also providing the passive of Tri-Focus?

Well number one, no one needs to they do it cause they want higher numbers. Players who want a higher score do, and players struggling to complete content seek any perceived advantage to help them.

Number two, I don't know that it matters as those seeking numbers will do anything regardless of the relationship to traditional views of performance roles. Also those desperate for a performance boost will follow the first group regardless of whether it will actually benefit them at their skill level.

Personally I like the more traditional role with just S&B, but I don't think it really matters what I like.

It is not as if stam isn't using Magic, nor is it as though Magcouldn't weild a powerful magical sword. I think they screwed up in the beginning with the structure and are still dealing with reverberations of that effect.

I am perfectly fine with the concept of a Tank Spell Caster, I however have a big problem with the way ZOS went about this. The animations and abilities are disappointing on so many levels.
    • Holding your staff out in front of you to block, looks weak
    • Heavy attacking to taunt
    • Using magicka to block with no visual effect to show anything other than physical blocking
    • No extra tanking abilities other than slight change in passives

We have seen Mobs put up a literal wall of ice in front of them that can absorb incoming projectiles in front of the caster, shards of ice being spawned from the ground or thrown at an enemy, waves of frost immobilizing anything it touches. There is so much potential, but instead they chose to retweak a fricking sub-category of a destruction magic weapon.... I hated it when it happened and I hate it now.

They gave some cool frost abilities to the Warden class but even they don't really use Frost Staff tanking the way ZOS wanted it to be. We use it(or lightning staff) cause its META, but its a visually and gameplay failure, most people that use it even actively don't put points into the passive that gives Frost staff the heavy attack taunt and magicka blocking.

I'm happy that bow is now a solid alternative to Destruction staffs on certain tank builds cause at least applying some debuffs with that makes a bit more sense and the visuals are not that immersive breaking as its not suppose to be a tanking weapon to begin with, but to me it beats the failure that is staff tanking. I mean hell if it wasn't for that fact that tanks are buff bots I don't see anyone having used staffs for tanking at all.

Add a new visual to Frost Staff blocking and either change more skills to have different effects when using frost staff or make it its own skill line and then we can talk. OR OR lets revert Frost staff to what it was, a DAMAGE option and lets use something like Illusion, Mysticism or Conjuration to trick the minds of enemies to attack you, to conjure wards, shields or summon stronger but temporary weapons and armor to protect you and your allies, and to reflect and absorb effects from and to enemies. There is so much you could do with the other magic types, but no lets use FROST for tanking......

I might have missed a few points but this turned into a bit of a rant cause of my hatred for what staff tanking has become.....

I honestly miss double sword and board but if it's here to stay, ice staff needs a better buff than maim. I would say a very small penetration buff would make it's a tank staff.

As for the ice staff taunt. It is horrendous, why not change elemental drains unused morph to a taunt and fracture and make it cost.

Sneaking in a heavy attack and weaving in balance is great way to restore a lot of Magicka quickly while applying a taunt and giving yourself major resolve/ward.

With ice staff anyway. Then you're good to go on your SnB bar again.

The Ice Staff should not have to be a back bar item only for Tanks. It should be able to be your maim weapon. A tank should be able to run another weapon other than One Handed and Shield and still be as effective. Right now that is not the case.

I like it, but I am partial to hybrid, battlemage, and shamanic warrior type characters. I do wish it had some way of applying fracture and breach, even if it was through the heavy attack with tri stat passive. It would definitely make it more viable to try dual staff build, which some people would enjoy. Although I suspect many would continue to use 1h and sh on a bar.

Necromancers can apply fracture and breach through graveyard, so they are currently the only tank that can bring those debuffs with one single class ability. Thus, they could potentially dual slot ice staff.

Thank you Lightspeed. Add NB to that too then. Nightblade is the class I have the least experience with so I appreciate the insight.
