When I use Ice Staff, I feel like I need Inner Fire to make sure I keep taunt up if I screw up my timing, but I really like the CC from Wall of Elements.

Overall I prefer Pierce Armor + Inner Fire for tanking.

I'm fine with using a Staff.
A little cumbersome at times but not in such a negative way that I don't enjoy it.

Having said that, it would be nice to have more skills than WoE to utilize more frequently. Pulsar is nice for Trash Pulls periodically, same with Crushing Shock but I would like a more consistent toolkit to work with than a handful of niche skills, granted 1h+Shield is really no better considering only 2 skills are really for Tanks but still.

    I got used to it.

My set up is S&B bar is for single target and Ice staff is for trash.. so I am actually Leashing ranged adds more than actually using my staff. I basically have a crossbow as a weapon on my staff bar.

I appreciate that there's more than one option for a tanking weapon, and for roleplay purposes it's amazing (I can be a tank and still roleplay a wizard, both of which I enjoy even though they tend to contradict each other in gameplay). It also gives some great chance to hybrid build a tank, which is realistically the only role that can easily hybrid as it doesn't rely on weapon damage or spell power. It's not what we're used to in typical fantasy lore, perhaps, but that's a good thing that ESO isn't just the same boring thing as every other fantasy MMO. I also appreciate the ability to build a full magicka tank, which while not really good in the meta, is a fun option to have.

I'm ok with it, more then that, my favourite build is not viable without ice staff though externally it's just standard DK.
Basically I used it from the very beginning without reading guides, was just curious about tooltip for ice staff on my magDK and I like how it worked. (though only as backbar)

Isn't it great to be able to tank AND off-heal? It's also really fun surprising people with a light armor tank o.o

I've been running ice/resto nightblade tank for awhile to level undaunted. Only in dungeons of course, but still there were a lot of runs, including dlc vets. No-single-comment. Nobody paid any attention that s&b is missing and tank does restoheavy attacks on regular basis. I was taunting with inner fire+surprise attack+eledrain to replace pierce armor.

I wish ice staff had a taunt skill that also debuffed (like puncture on S&B). I end up burning two skills on my bar (inner fire for taunt + a debuff skill) when on sword and board all I need is Puncture. The heavy attack taunt on the ice staff doesn't feel good to use.

Tried it on my DK tank. Didn't like it. Went back to S&B both bars.

Don't want magicka fueling my blocking. I don't feel obliged to provide blockade to a group. Prefer Caltrops as a ranged ability that I can toss out to grab a big AoE initial aggro.

Agree the heavy attack taunt from frost could use some improvements.

I like the idea, but not the choice. I'm still a staunch supporter of the Illusion staff being created and made as the de facto magicka/alternate tanking weapon, and ice damage being turned back to offensive, boosting all direct damage (whether single target or AoE), fire boosting all DoTs (whether single target or AoE), and lightning boosting all AoEs (whether direct or DoT).

It works and is effective. What's not to like?

A couple of staves look like spears or extravagant polearms if you are that jarred by the look. But never Tri-focus. The passive is atrocious. Just skip it.

Well, you got a very kind trial leaders, I never saw tank without S&B in any of my progression guilds. Backbar maybe very different, but front bar is basically the same always.

I love staff tanking but I agree. If I'm using any element at all, I would prefer that it's fire. If there were a specific non-elemental staff like an illusion staff, it would probably feel a lot better. Maybe this could call for an entirely new staff weapon line that's specifically built for tanking?

Personally, I do not want to use a staff as a tank. It kills the character fantasy and makes him feel more like a battlemage.

The way enchants are procced reliably by wall and volley and nothing else basically pigeonholes players into backbarring those weapons, thanks also to the 1 hand enchant nerf which was aimed at dual wield anyway.

So yeah I think it sucks.

I really hope that when they do the weapon skill lines pass (next update, I think?) that they make staff tanking feel better to use.

On my proper tanks I do not use staff. Anyone who complains a lot either goes, of the group waits another 2 hours to find a tank.
If you do not give crap about leader board runs, you shouldn't be forced using staff. Hell use a 2H or a bow for that matter. Both still apply full crushing if that's needed.

I don't mind tanking with a staff as it certainly has its uses. It's nice to be able to help apply off balance with the lightning staff and to be able to chose to get back my magicka instead of stam during trash pulls where I use talons and chains a lot. That said I am frustrated that they took away the choice to go double sword and board while being highly effective for the group as that helped me learn a lot about how to tank well since it gave me a better buffer. Even if they fixed the 1H enchants I would likely still use a staff most of the time but I would strongly encourage newer tanks to use double sword and board until they were very comfortable with management of their bars and tanking knowledge.

Mind, you're not obliged to invest skill points into Tri Focus. If you simply omit this passive, you'll still be blocking with stamina as usual. It's not related to the topic of course, but I just wanted to note that, because a lot of people imply that ice staff is used with that passive. As far as I can see, most tanks actually don't use Tri Focus with ice staff.

And replying to the topic - didn't particularly enjoy it, but got used to it. Seems like adopting to stuff is a trend among tanking as of late. Pondering on giving bow a shot though.
