I don't see this as a positive approach in an MMO - people are getting more and more incapable to communicate with each other in a normal way and establish working relationships successfully and the game should support this increasing disability and make it even worse?- In a single-player game this can be fun - like in Fallout 4 Cait, Piper, Curie, Nick and so on are quite fleshed out companions, which have some story elements to add to the rest of the game and they add a moral compass, which lets them approve or disapprove of your behavior - this has been fun to play in Fallout 4 - but in an MMO?- Really?

I would have to agree. Where some would see it as a fun diversion and completely innocent, others might see it as a digital blow up doll. I would hope that if this were ever a thing, people won't use it as an excuse for not building a relationship in the real world.

Whilst I'm sure that some do, hundreds of thousands don't. It's something that is relatively common (romances w/NPCs) in a role playing game. I don't think you'll find that over many people who play RPGs all of a sudden feel the need to grab a sword and start laying about with it (yes, yes, there will be the occasional person who does succumb to that sort of thing) or robbing or back-stabbing. It's sad that it happens (over-involvement for lack of better term) but for the majority romance, or killing many people/critters/mobs, or stealing anything not nailed down or flat out murdering NPCs, well, they understand it's part of an RPG.

Plus that aspect can be ignored just as some folk ignore crafting or PvP or theft etc.

Options, always a good thing. :)

Significant other and I got our dudes the Pledge of Mara. Was very romantic, as some random Khajiit, standing by the shrine, congratulated us.

But I liked some of the SWTOR-romances, too. So - why not NPCs? No skin off my back.

Unfortunately for many trying to make relationships in real life is tiring and hopeless because for any number of variables it just can't happen. You're making a little fantasy rpg narrative sound like a bad thing.

While I won't delve into the connotations and correlations between real life social awkwardness and ingame romances, I do feel it can have a place in MMOs, not just RPGs in general.

I'm neutral to the idea, personally. But as pointed out earlier, some devs have the chutzpah to pull it off. I mean, JRPGs are full of them...

On a permanent basis, aye. But romance in a game (MMO or not) is no more a detachment than is PvPing or questing etc. In fact, it takes a whole lot less time than most other in-game activities and offers content for those who are interested. Others can ignore it entirely.

If people approach it as an innocent bit of fun, it may be ok. As long as its not a deep experience and excuse for not developing real world relationships. If a real relationship is tiring or hopeless, it is happening with the wrong person, or something needs to change to fix it. Both of these things are possible.

I think this would be a great idea.

Instead of marrying another player at the shrine of Mara, you could marry an NPC companion and they would reside at your primary in-game house.

You could visit them every 24-hours and receive an XP bonus similar to the XP bonus you get while questing with the player character you've married.

This bonus could have a duration limit and wouldn't stack with other XP bonuses, and you'd forgo being able to marry another NPC or player.

It'd be an interesting concept, especially for those of us who are forever-alones.

Helena, my Breton mage, has a major crush on Neramo, the Dwemer-obsessed Altmer from the DC storyline.
Anjazah, my Khajiit ranger, pines for Lord Garesh-ri.
Claims-Abandoned-Chests, my Argonian Dk, has fixated on Stormy-Eyes the Dreamwalker from Eastmarch.

Game romances are creepy. I was already a bit taken aback with the flirting from Darien and Neryu. This isn't EA. I'm a hero saving the world, not flirting with it.

I'd love to see it, doubt it would happen. We have 12 yr olds that play this game. They don't even want The Lusty Argonian Maid excerpts on the forums. When they said the game was mature, they should have kept it that way and made the parents account for their children playing it. And if I had to pick someone, it would be that rogue Jakarn. Ah yes, Steve Blum. Love that man, love that voice.

Well, there IS a sex dungeon in Ebonheart. And the game is rated M. If the parents don't like that, that's their fault.

And The Lusty Argonian Maid ain't got nothin' on The Real Barenziah. Actually, I think The Real Barenziah is far more x-rated. At any rate, Elder Scrolls has always had a mature element and ESO brands the game mature. They should stick with that. Parents need to account for their kids but honestly a 12 year old with computer access and who has started to hit puberty has probably seen far worse than anything Elder Scrolls can throw at him or her.

Oh gods, The Real Barenziah is a doozy. It far surpasses Lusty Argonian Maid. I mean, Dunmer are known for being promiscuous, so it's not like what happened surprised anyone there, but it definitely shocks the reader.

Not entering the whole discussion, really, but I just peeked at the thread and found this, so I wanted to remark - no, I don't think we have 12 yr olds playing this game, not unless they lied about their age anyway. Game TOS prohibits underage players from playing it.
