A way too early Chapter 2020 speculation thread.

I’ve got a hunch we won’t get a chapter next year. Instead they’ll do a massive overhaul of the game to increase performance to prepare for the spike of players when they drop the Skyrim expansion in 2021 (yes Skyrim fits the size on an expansion, remember there’s lots of mountains in Skyrim that fill up space)

If not I think we’ll get Mephala’s realm for an expansion in 2020

It's almost certainly going to be Western Skyrim.

Unless they're waiting for 2021 to do that.

    The only remaining options are:

    - Rest of Cyrodiil (all the most interesting locales have already been covered in the PvP zone and Gold Coast)
    - Rest of Hammerfell (we already have 5 Hammerfell zones in the game and TES VI is going to take place there, so this seems extremely unlikely)
    - Rest of Black Marsh (we just got a DLC there, and Argonian lore is as dry as it gets)

Firor already confirmed that there's been a shift to an annual story with the Chapter and all DLC being related content. He does make it sound like there won't be a racial shift so I'd expect Q4 2019 to focus on the Khajiit as well.

2020 will be whatever story they want to tell. Probably something familiar yet unexpected. But there will definitely be a Chapter.

Interesting. I haven't actually considered the fact they might just completely change their release cadence altogether next year.

As long as Sheogorath isn’t involved I’ll be happy. He’s a tired gimmick.

Now that I’ve typed this, guess what will definitely happen next? Sheogorath expansion next.

Skyrim. They skipped the Alik'r this year (which is all the DC turf they have left) to do Elsweyr, so if they're picking based on profit potential Skyrim is a no-brainer.

The majority opinion seems to be this one. I can't really argue with it though, adding more of Skyrim (or heck, even the rest of it) seems like a solid bet for next years chapter.

I personally think it will be a full size pocket of Oblivion zone though.

Seems like they’ve been doing a new class (Vvardenfell), guild and new crafting style (Summerset), new class (Elsweyr)... I’m feeling Winterhold/College of Winterhold and we’re finally going to get spell crafting and a College of Winterhold guild.

...Fun fact, the college views necromancy more as a tool and not a weapon and therefore never made it illegal 🤔

If I were to choose what I'd like personally...

heck, I'd be up for anywhere.
However, I'm also up for something with a "mysterious" vibe, so maybe Colored Rooms or something like that.

As for what is contained in the Chapter? I REALLY want some more solo content akin to Maelstrom arena. Something new and challenging for the solo players, with spicy new rewards.

As for a new mechanic/feature? I'm gonna be predictable and say that I'd like that "1h+spell" weapon skill line.

I suspect they'll bank on Oblivion nostalgia before Skyrim, so it's going to be Cyrodiil.

Either Colovia or Nibenay chapter with a Battlespire DLC in Q4.

Vivec: Worse, buddy. They're buying it.

I said it the last time we had those thoughts...
Well, we got Elsweyr, and we have also gotten a hint of imperial remnant troubles as part of its storyline.

So personally, I think the most likely direction would be continuing that storyline, once they are done with Elsweyr and dragons... and look into some leftover lands from the fall of the empire. Nibenay and Blackwood perhaps, since they are bordering elsweyr. Colovia would make a good "standalone DLC" region I reckon. Possibly even leading the story towards Falkreath sometime, and from there take it further towards western skyrim.

Story-wise... well, we met Abnur Tharn, and his sister Euraxia (half-sister!), while his daughter Clivia is holding together the remains of the empire... and might need help against some threat...
...it could be another daedric prince, there are many minor ones who would love to make trouble and perhaps succed where Molag Bal and the triad conspiracy failed and build up a new empire under their control by infiltrating cultists into Nibenay or Colovia...
...or it could be some forgotten danger from Black Marsh awakened as side effect by the events in Murkmire threatening Blackwood, a host of undead, ancient ayleids or more recently deceased Knarhaten flu victims, led by a powerful lich-lord and bent on revenge against all living things...
...or or could be mundane, like for example imperial commanders in the scattered empire plotting against each other (Colovia vs. Nibenay?) or even the reachmen who might come together in hopes of conquering the empire again and reviving the reign of the longhouse emperors starting with Falkreath... (it has only been a few years since Varen Aquilarios overthrew them after all)

Of course, there are a great many other places where they might make an expansion of things. Western Skyrim and the Reachmen troubles in it alone would make for a grand expansion (possibly with a bardic guild thrown into it, much like Psijics in Summerset?), while there is still a lot of the hammerfell deserts to be covered in accessible regions... who knows what dangers might be hiddern beneath those sands? Or what mundane troubles might brew as the rift beween forebears and crowns get more and more pronounced, and some ambitious people wish to brew it into a civil war to seize power for themselves... Same for Black Marsh, really, but since Murkmire was recently done, I wager they would want a while before they turn their eyes towards that again...

I could easily see an "annual theme" here - imperial remnants 2020, western skyrim 2021, redguard deserts 2022... that's expansions and DLCs for three years, easy! And after that, they could easily go back to Black Marsh and do something there again as well in 2023. Four years of fun, easily!

In the further future, they could even go "offmap" - give us a "High Seas" expansion with piracy and exotic isles (maybe an expedition to the remains of sunken Yokuda, or a visit to Thras, isle-kingdom of the Sload?) and possibly even a maormer playable race, or an "Avaviri Vanguard" expansion covering the three large islands between Akavir and Tamriel, finding out the reason for the recent invasion and preventing the next one? With an option to play as one of the akaviri races?

And they could -always- squeeze in some daedric planes, but really, those might be much better done as CWC-sized DLC rather then as expansion.

Anyhow, those are my thoughts on the matter...

I would honestly prefer no chapter at all for next year and instead focus on performance fixes and class adjustments. Cyrodiil is a mess, achievements need to be account-wide, and the ability to change your class and alliance needs to be added. Those things alone are worthwhile to work on instead of more half-done content that only adds more instability to the game.

People need reasons to stay invested in the game. Getting booted every night and be able to connect for hours at a time is NOT going to keep players around. ZoS needs to accept that they don't know what they are doing and let the players' feedback guide them and instead of ignoring it.

Just as the Discussion Title says. Judging by what we know of about the 'Season of the Dragon' so far, my own personal guess right now is that next years chapter will be a full pocket of Oblivion zone much like Coldharbour.

I'd love to discuss this more when I see other thoughts and additions.

    Please be so.

I'm a little tired of just the Tamriel continent. I know everyone wants to see it complete but by now we've seen everyone's home.

Time to do something different, in a different place.

CWC is still the best "small zone DLC" for me because it was so different from anything else.

I'm really hoping next year will take us to another world/plane to bring some variety.

Maybe one chapter with 3 big Daedric healms, for example...

Why not both? Look at the current roadmap. They seem to be actually taking performance seriously this time.

Cannot see ZoS keep to the same repetitive pattern of Guild line/Class, then Guild line every other year like some people speculate. Seems way too predictable or obvious, which takes away from surprise.

It is high time we got a new weapon skill line over another guild, preferably an alteration/illusion staff to get rid of the abysmal ice staff tanking or spellsword (aka 1h+rune), which I would take those any day over another guild. There hasn't been a new weapon since the launch of ESO.

I personally don't see what a College of Winterhold skill line would offer that the Mages Guild does not, other than perhaps a new meta spammable like psijic's elemental weapon.

Just as the discussion title says: way too early.

That said, it needs to be as good as Orsinium. Wrothgar is the only zone where you see other players having any fun.

Not sure what you mean? How so?

I go to Wrothgar because it's a great zone to get mats. Whilst I am there, I always get sucked into joining a world boss fight. these are more difficult than regular zones and involve many other players. Joining the daily writs makes it a bit more satisfying.

I see a level of activity and enjoyment in Wrothgar that I don't see in other zones; DLC or chapter.
Wrothgar is far and away the best PvE zone and all new content should be of this quality. IMO...

I feel this is partly because there are actually worthwhile set drops in Wrothgar. There haven't been any good overland sets since Briarheart, so most new areas are pretty boring to farm in because there's simply no interesting loot. They need to start bringing more interesting stuff to new overland zones, not just huge bosses with crappy loot.

Its 2-3 chapters in the hammerfell area, the other places left is Skyrim who is 2-3 chapters and the southern part with southern Cyrodil and black marsh.

In short they will not hold out the area because TES VI is located in the same area.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
