When you queue for a dungeon and end up with 3 other persons, as much at it may be surprising they are not bots. When someone says "hi", "hey" or whatever, the least of courtesy is greeting back.

I usually don't greet in PuGs either. Don't take it personal, it's nothing against you, I just find it unnecessary. What's polite about that if nobody really needs it or cares that much anyway? Get in, do your job, get out, everyone is happy, or could be at least, greeted or not.

a lot of people arent reading their messages in dungeons. i have 3 message windows. one for guilds, one for group, and one for zone and system messages. everything scrolling in one box is obtuse. Maybe they havent figured out how to manage thier chat window yet?

At the beginning, Hello, Hey, Hi, Howdy, What's up.

At the end. Tyall, Ty everyone, Good job everyone, My only words of wisdom are (radio edit).

I greet the group and go on about business. I usually run forward and wait for everyone else to move up and then it's on.

When running normals, I go for:
    "Hi, anyone need the quest?"

The way I'm not charging off to tank the next mob while a party member is trying to chat with a quest NPC or I know to wait at the end for them to turn in the quest before disbanding.

I usually say hi, I always say it back when it’s said first by someone else. I’ve felt the weirdness of being the only one to say it, I usually chalk it up to language barrier...

I have no words to express how much I agree with OP. When did people start giving so few f*cks that they won't even greet fellow group members who have greeted them first? Not to mention when I get a DLC dungeon and ask if everyone is comfortable with tactics, all I get is crickets, then at the first obstacle someone says they've never done it before, or worse simply leaves the group.

I don't know, it must be a generation gap thing. I'm nearing my 40s, saw the Internet become a thing instead of being born into it, and maybe it's just us old geezers that have a habit of treating other people online as, you know, people, deserving of the tiniest bit of respect.

There are people on the other side of the Internet. People you're relying on to get your quick run. You say "hi" or "excuse me" or "please" in real life as well, right? Then again, maybe you don't.

    Hi!

BTW, you didn't say "hi","hey", or even "whatever" -- no courtesy opening greeting

I'm a 'hi' sayer -- for normals, I always ask who's questing too. Not for vets, though.

I don't usually greet in pugs because I don't like to give the smug ones the pleasure of ignoring it. I do however always say hello back if someone does greet the group. So I would agree with you in that respect. That seems a simple enough courtesy people ought to repay. It's not as if it takes a lot of effort to type "Hi".

I usually say thank you for the group after the dungeon is over too, unless the group really gets under my skin. Then I'll just quickly drop and hope I never encounter those individuals again. But that's pretty rare.

There was a time when the anti-courteous were a self resolving problem, as the community in general was very intolerant of poor group etiquette. People simply wouldn't group with them, and they wouldn't get into the better guilds.

For the most part, I 98% solo. That doesn't mean I won't say hello or thanks on the occasions when I do group. In fact, I'm quite grateful for the help to do content that I could not do myself. I couldn't even fathom joining up with a group of people to assist me in what I needed, and not say a thing to them.

At any rate, I greet my group, and thank them for helping after the final encounter is finished. I'm not chatty during the dungeon, because I can't type and fight :) unless we take a time out in a safe spot for a min or two for some reason. But, bare-bones greetings? Why wouldn't you.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen. - Douglas Adams

It is a rare mind indeed that can render the hitherto non-existent blindingly obvious. The cry 'I could have thought of that' is a very popular and misleading one, for the fact is that they didn't, and a very significant and revealing fact it is too. - Douglas Adams

A quick-mote "hello" holds equal value to no "hello". As in everyday life, when something becomes programmed behaviour, it has zero worth; I'd rather stop and chat, pass a quick, colloquial form of "hello" (more human) than have an automated version. /s We can all invent a reason to be annoyed about some opposed social obligation.

Seriously though. Does it matter? I greet a lot, don't often get replies -- I'll always ask if anyone needs quests. If I notice I'm too far ahead, I stop and wait. I TYFG / GG before I drop. That's because I think it's the right thing to do, not because I expect others to do the same.

I greet my new group mates and thank them for the group at the end. It takes no time to be courteous or friendly...and may even lead to a little less toxicity in PUGS lol

It's too many younger people these days, I think. Nothing personal (actually it is), but I think it's considered "cool" to stay in dignified silence when other people are being social and greeting. Raises personal status in own eyes, or something like that.
With people in more mature years they usually greet or respond to greetings, at least from my observations. Figures, those people have seen life.
Life is a ride, like days in a train, cities rush by, like ghosts in the night.
The rhythm of wheels, time fades away, stations of a journey, destination unknown.

For the record: I hate this running. If you want to do the quest, look for chests or whatever, sure, go ahead. I also answer questions or generally react when talked to, but I don't see why I'm am required to type two stupid letters at the start and end just to be "polite". For example you can say "hi" and then start running, pull mobs together and let the rest of your group deal with them while you dash ahead. That's impolite in my books, but has nothing to do with greeting or not. You can still act inconsiderate while adhering to formalities like hello and thank you.

The hello emote is easy enough. PvP is actually what got me to slot it over "handle the adds".

This event week has been hell, though. Way too many people punching above their weight class and being afraid to admit it. The less interaction with the group, the easier it is to ditch them when you decide to leave. Some people were being chummy just so they could get carried. I'm more friendly and helpful when there are no events.

It's like the town is full of tourists right now. They will be gone when the season ends, and take their poor manners with them. Some tourists on the other hand are great and restore your hope in humanity. There's still the village idiot, the fake tank, etc - they never leave town. It's just that the local idiot doesn't seem so bad when the out of town idiot starts causing trouble. Right now, PUGs have a double helping of idiots.
