What Do you consider to be a Casual Player?

Someone who is casual about the content, Meta and Competition be danged I'm here for fun!!
    Some definitions for casual:
    1. relaxed and unconcerned
    2. not regular or permanent.
    3. a person who does something irregularly.

    The options:
    1. Someone who is casual about the amount of time played (hour here, two hours there)
    2. Someone who is casual about the content, Meta and Competition be danged I'm here for fun!!

So, it seems that the definitions meets the both options, but I still chose the option 2. Why?

Let's think about overlapping situations and negations. We get:
    1. Someone who plays irregularly and is unconcerned about performance/hard content.
    2. Someone who plays regularly and is unconcerned about performance/hard content.
    3. Someone who plays irregularly but is concerned about performance and wants to challenge themselves.
    4. Someone who plays regularly but is concerned about performance and wants to challenge themselves.

From these situations it is clear that the 4 is clearly not a casual player and 1 is clearly a casual player - by definition. But how about 2 and 3? For me, number 2 sounds more like a casual player and 3 sounds less like a casual player. That is why I picked your option "Someone who is casual about the content, Meta and Competition be danged I'm here for fun!!".

Bear in mind: I do not find being a casual a bad thing and I do not think not being casual a bad thing. Both can be fun and enjoyable.

    Casual player:

its an MMO term. By definition, TES players are not casuals; there are still people modding and playing Skyrim.

As ESO is falsely marketed as an MMO (it does not cater to the term 'massively' and quite often doesn't cater to the term 'online') I therefore fail to see how the word 'casual' can be applied to any ESO player.

It's just another derogatory term from the elitist 'hard-core' MMO players who are refugees from the last game that they destroyed with their reckless, selfish demands on other players.

They all wear cleats when riding their pushies in real life. They ride through red lights, or up onto the footpath to use pedestrian crossings; they ride in the dark and expect you to see them. They ride four abreast and have a chat on public roads (try doing that in a car)
THEY ALL HAVE TO BE SOMEWHERE BY A CERTAIN TIME. Look out anyone who gets in their way.

    tossers, the lot of them.

A casual player is someone who enjoys the game and it’s content at their own pace. This includes the hard content, and the meta. They play for fun rather than being serious. For example, I’d count myself as casual.
The most important thing in life is enjoying yourself.

I think its a worthwhile investigation into what terminology means to different people.

I have referred to the "average player" in threads before, only to find that what I mean by an average player, is different to others idea of an average player.

I invest a lot of time into ESO, I enjoy it, I do a little story occasionally, delvs, daily quests, dungeon pledges, trials and the odd pvp session every now and then. I aim for the best gear I can get my hands on and I work on my builds and skill rotation. I do all this across 10 characters. But I am certainly not a meta player or max/min and have no desire to be.

There is no ‘right.’ Use of the term is not standard, and personally? I do not use the term at all. It is a poor one because it is too polysemic.

The polysemy should definitely make us stop and think whenever we encounter generic claims about "casuals." This group has been blamed for pretty much every ill known to the game, despite the fact that apparently no one can agree on who they are.

Well the trouble with some people is that they want the best stuff/do the best stuff but their attitude is too... casual. You won't clear vCR+3 or vAS+2 without a ton of regular practice both on the dummy and inside the trial itself.

I play for fun and with no hurry. I still totally suck in this game and its fine: I don't care and I don't play with people who care before I'm good enough. If my previous MMO is any indication I'll casually get into semi-hardcore content in 2-3 years.

A casual gamer used to be someone that would sometimes pick up a game and play it to have some fun alone or with friends. He was not the guy that would get super into a game or get extremely frustrated over it. The game is what it is and he was just having fun.

Today a casual gamer is someone that will pick up a game and as soon as some obstacle or challenge appear on his way he will start complaining. Despite being openly casual he will strongly voice his opinions on chats, forums and social media, even though the time he spends on writing essays is way more than his time in the game. He wants to complete the game fast and move on and if the game present some obstacles then it's a hard game and it should burn in th deepest cycles of hell. He will try to bring the game to his own standards, instead of adapting to its mechanics, even though he doesn't care about it and will probably be doing something else to kill time in a month or so. Anyone, I repeat ANYONE, that asks for some extra challenge in the game is the enemy and should be terminated on sight.

Ah, the perils of not reading closely. I should have picked the "both" option, because they're both perfectly valid definitions. You can be casual about your level of commitment, your level of prayer to the Gods of Uberskill, or the actual amount of time you devote to play.

Lately, I've been #2 and #3. Still not that casual about #1, but that feeling of commitment flees readily once I start getting less casual about #2. Because #2 is where the fun vanishes and the feeling of work begins.

I know people who have not done any landscape questing, barely know what crafting is, have maybe tried a pug once or twice to do a dungeon, have tooled around in PvP once or twice, and pretty much just come into the game to talk to people and run around in circles. To me, that's the definition of casual. Anyone who has an actual goal that they work toward, whether it's crafting, questing, leveling, meta, non-meta, pvp ranks or anything else that takes time and effort is not casual, regardless of the amount of time they have to spend playing.

I consider myself a casual player, because 1) I don't play much, 2) I don't chase meta and like to roleplay few of my characters, 3) I'm more interested in the story, lore and housing, than in PvP, trials and veteran dungeons, though, I'm into them from time to time.

Basically a meaningless subjective term used to insult others.

I know some players who are deadly serious about decorating their 30 or 40 homes and spent countless hours doing so. Can't fight their way through a delve but I would not call them casual. Same can be said for those who are very deep into the merchant trade. Or serious about getting into the story and background of their character. Is a player who runs the meta and pushes their 'toon' crashdummy around doing 60K dps while speed-clicking through quest dialogue any more serious about this game?

I don't play a lot. Like, really occasionally. But that wasn't the case before. When I started this game I was in highschool, I had a lot of free time on my hands. Now, 4 years later, I play way less because of my studies and my work, but when I do, it's for vet trials runs, testing on the PTS, new content, etc... And even though I don't play much, I regularly read the forum, and I theorycraft while at work.

I'm really invested in this game, and relatively decent, as I can clear vMA whenever I want and I regularly do vet trials. But my play time is really inconsistent and low compared to what it used to be.

So, I consider that being a casual is a mental state and how you approach the game, it often results in less hours spent playing, but that's not the other way around.

Its just a state of mind, totally subjective and nothing to do with skill levels. I consider myself casual because I just play for fun and to relax.

I can and have done most things though I doubt I'd ever make emperor even if the achievement would be sweet. I've completed maelstrom arena and done some of the group dungeons solo. But I've never made or played either a vampire or werewolf yet.

Some days I log in, decide to do the crafting writs on my main and log out again. Other days I might spend actively in game for eight or nine hours if I've the time.

Yesterday while waiting for the dungeon finder queue to pop I decided to try and find M'aiq without any sort of aids (Google... I'm on ps4) in several zones simply because it seemed like a good idea at the time.

In my opinion it's someone who doesn't play competitively.

So I do indeed consider myself a casual.

TBH though, if you don't at least run normal dungeons then why even do you play?

I try to do a bit of everything PvE. Hoping to run my first normal trial on Sunday.

Me. Played for almost a year solo, definitely more than 2-3 hours a day when i play. Not part of any guild, never done a trial, don't bother with dungeons after a first run, don't pvp other than obligatory getting of war horn, rapid maneuver, vigor, or caltrops, just questing, leveling skills and outfit station.

I am sorry but my OCD will not let me vote till I point out that it is not:
'What Do you consider to be a Casual Player?'
    but:
'Who do you consider to be casual player?'
    or
'What do you consider to be casual game-play?'

Also, but that is just me I'd use 'would' instead of 'do'.

I am required to point out as well that the actual question you wanted to ask is 'How would you describe casual players?'

Both. When i started eso i came directly from playing 300+ hours skyrim and was looking for more. And thats exactly how i played the game for the first three month. All i did for 3 month was questing and exploring, collecting skyshards, did some crafting and so on. I didnt had any clue about builds or rotations and skills. I've spend lots of hours in the game, picked skills that i thought would be good and gear that sounded nice but actually had no clue about anything else, i was just playing the game for fun and even tho i spend a lots of hours in the game and logged on every day i would have called myself a filthy casual.
    Then i joined a guild....and everything changed...

I am surprised to see so many votes for the second option. I wouldn't call someone "casual" if they weren't interested in PVP or hardcore analysis (I'm not, but I still play for hours a day). If you play all the quests, and listen to all the stories, and are eager for new content when it comes out, you are not "casual."

Casuals, imo, are varied but I think it all falls under one.
    • They don't chase meta
    • They could careless for BIS (to a degree like they can have the bis gear but not gold it out or maximize elsewhere like CP, ect.)
    • They don't care about DPS tests
    • They just enjoy the non-competitive gameplay (so no weekly leaderboard score chasing)

    You WILL find them:
    • Asking to join Trials
    • Queue for a dungeon
    • Join a PVP group
    • Sell in area chat
    • Fishing
    • Farming
    • House decorating
    • Collecting
    • You get the point

So in essence, they play all the content but they aren't chasers. They are content with getting the gear they like and just casually playing without fighting for a spot in the top. They are content with the content.

    Edit:
And time spent means nothing. They can be casuals who farm for hours a day or only have 2 hours to spare afterwork.

Because the majority of the forumers are American and under the age of 30, therefore, everything must be labeled, categorized, judged, mocked and criticized.

The majority of 2 generations is locked in to the High-School mentality anyway. It's called "Arrested Development".

Those of us that are actual adults just ignore it.
