Low FPS while playing with a GTX 760

  • ErrorBHL
    ErrorBHL
I'm now fairly confident that its little more than a driver issue. I decided to go ahead and install the latest beta version of the Nvidia driver for the 700 series (337.50) and I seem to have gotten an average of around 10-15 fps gains in city, and about the same outside of cities.

Before this I was running the latest recommended driver on their site(335.23) which was released on March 10th. The beta driver was released seemingly within the past 24 hours.

When installing I did it in my usual manner of running DDU, mentioned here:
try using Display Driver Uninstaller to clean out your drivers and reinstall the latest's ones fresh.

    DDU Download
    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=379506

And then installing the drivers. Should you choose to run this program, keep in mind that it is recommended you do it in Safe Mode and that you create a system restore point before hand.

After installing the newest beta drivers though, my fps has gone up noticeably. I would expect greater improvements as time goes on if it is just a driver issue.

I will try to get the driver version that my friend is currently using as well, and try that out to see if I see any difference, however he is currently taking care of an emergency and may be gone for over a day.

If anyone else having this issue is willing to try out the beta driver and see if it helps them as well it would be appreciated as it would help narrow down the possibility of other issues. To find the latest beta driver for Nvidia, the follow the link below and ensure the 'recommended/beta' drop-down box is set to 'Beta'

**EDIT** I should also mention that the game is now utilizing my GPU considerably more then it was previously, and very close to reaching its peak core speed.

What about amd? I have an AMD Radeon 8650g, ran fine before friday.

I'm on AMD Radeon HD MSI R9 270x, no problems with my fps fluctuating

I have a 780ti and an i7 2600K and I'll edit this post with my driver version when I get home, but I believe it's whichever driver was released yesterday, so probably a beta driver. I have the nVidia prgram set to automatically download driver updates for me.

    Full Specs:
    Core i7 2600k
    16GB DDR3-1600
    120GB SanDisk Extreme SSD (OS)
    3TB Hitachi Deskstar
    ASUS P8P67 WS REVOLUTION Mobo
    850W Corsair HX850 PSU
    Windows 8.1 Pro + MC

I have a similar system_ but i have this frame drops aswell, the 770 runs about 70-90 FPS,
then it drops randomly very low. I run at Ultra, AA off, 60 % draw distance.

    i7 2600k
    16GB DDR-1600 corsair XMP
    250 gbyte Samsung SSD
ASUS Sabertooth P67 / most recent Bios
Nvidia GTX 770, already upgraded from 560 Ti for ESO

but i have fps drops, and now since 1.02 micro stuttering issues, which were not there before with beta client,
or 1.01, others in my guild reported them aswell.

I used the latest WHQL Driver 335.37 ?

Eso ist installed on a 5200 RPM 3 TB Hard Drive, that could be an issue, but i have a lot of steam games on
the same hard drive, which have no issue, and full Performance. (300 FPS in Valve's Left 4 Dead)

I would be satisfied if Eso would run constant 60 FPS, to meet my Monitors 60 Hz in Cyrodil :)
Currently it drops down to 20 FPS sometimes, also we got a lot of disconnects in our Guild, while we had a full
group of players, many players got a disconnect. (Differnt issue.)

I should be receiving my new CPU today, so in the highly unlikely chance that my CPU was in fact bottle-necking my graphics card, I will find out soon.

I still am rather confused as to why some players running virtually identical builds with the same drivers and everything are having issues and other do not. I've tried to cover almost every angle I can think of in figuring out what the issue is and nothing seems to help.

Running on a GTX 760, I would expect a consistent 60fps out of my card, yet I am finding myself barely able to maintain 45 in cities, and sometimes even worse. The difference between ultra/high graphics with 100 draw distance and minimum graphics with 20 draw distance is about 10-15 fps which is completely absurd. I am starting to wonder if certain cards themselves have some sort of flaw in them that is causing them to improperly handle something ESO uses. I really don't know much at all on the software end of things, so I probably sound like an idiot at this point, but I'm just flat out of ideas at this point.

Anyway, I'll post here later this afternoon/evening and let everyone know if I saw a gain with a CPU upgrade. (Don't expect much)

Nvidia promises a huge boost in performance for some games with their new release of drivers and AMD has Mantle with up to 40% especially for low end CPU´s like those from the AMD FX series, that however only for the new cards with the CCG chip, so no HD Readon 5xxx,6xxx sadly and the games must support Mantle which very few do atm.

    As for my own issue´s,

I had to disable my HD texture fix in the settings and now my 6970 runs fine again. Maybe the performance loss was indeed by the amount of people who are playing and then assembling 20-30 HD textures was just too much... time will tell.

That said I am back on Ultra with 100 draw distance and everything enabled except depth of field.

I sometimes drop to 35 fps now, but its a lot better than before when I dropped to 15.

There are many tweaks in the settings.ini that might help to improve the performance further, without losing the graphic details - but this remains to be seen.

I am still waiting for a true full-screen mode to come. I would like to see it, as running a multi-monitor setup causes some issues when frantically moving your mouse about your screen in certain situations. At the very least they need an ability to lock your mouse to the window until a full screen can be implemented.

Speaking of settings files, this is rather random but I figure I might as well toss this info out to those here.

If you wish to boot your game up and not have to mash your buttons to skip through the company logo videos, do the following:

    - Find your ESO folder in your 'My Documents' (something like this: C:\Users\UserNameHere\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live)
    - Open your UserSettings.txt in notepad
    - Ctrl+F and find: SET SkipPregameVideos "0"
    - Change the 0 to a 1, save and exit

Voila, your game will now skip the logo videos and go straight to your log in screen. Most games have an option like this that must be enabled through manual file editing, for those that might be looking for it there you have it.

Wish I would of seen this thread BEFORE I put down $300 on the GTX 760. I thought this would be an upgrade but it's about the same as my ATI HD Radeon 6850 which is only 1 gig. PvP at Ultra settings is a complete FPS mess and even at high it's not great. Even the cities lag and I hover around 25 to 30 fps. I talked to a guildie who said he had two Geforce Titans running and was having similar issues. I feel like it's the game's issue since every other game runs fine. No comment from anyone at Zen or Nvidia so a bit perturbed to say the least.

    Ouch!

Based on some threads here, it would seem that the 700-line of nVidia cards is having more problems running the game than, say 600-line.

Oh thank the Eight! I was about to start hunting for command line options as those splash screens drive me nuts!

For those of you trying to correlate card models to problems, my previous card was a 570 before Monday, which I used all the way through Beta, and the relative framerates feel about the same (sorry no actual numbers, didn't discover /fps until Monday either). I suspect any dedicated gamer probably upgraded to Kepler-architecture 600 and 700 series hardware over the last 2-3 years so there aren't many 500-series users left out there. I'm a late adopter when it comes to GPUs.

The fact that Radeon users are getting similar performance numbers should point away from the issue being vendor/series/model specific. I could probably test this if I downloaded the Mac client to my iMac with a built-in 4850.

I had to set view distance to 70 and activate v-sync via the nvidia control panel to start having some decent experience. But it's not perfect, and surely not as it should be considering the high end rig I have.

I hope Zenimax is going to work on this soon cause i'll not pay sub if I continue to experiment 15-20fps in cyrodiil with around 15-20 people....

Fixing these things can be quite difficult, when most players have no problems at all.

I had the same issue as you. I have an i7 2600k and a GTX 680. In the game I had like 20-35 fps when looking in the distance, which is completely unacceptable for my machine.

I saw on some forum the suggestion to download openhardwaremonitor and check how the resources are being spent while playing the game. I didn't notice anything strange except that both my CPU and GPU were running at 90 degrees celsius and you don't have to be computer savy to know that's bad.

So I opened the case, cleaned the CPU cooler and moved my computer to another location. My fps jumped from 35 to 80. :D

Make sure it's not a heating problem as it can murder your fps.

Well I clean my computer every month and I can assure you that's not the problem here. My GPU never goes above 80° (which is totally fine for a TITAN) and my CPU is around 60° in heavy load (I have good cooling).

The problem comes mainly from GPU use that never goes above 50% capacity and that has to come from the game nothing else. What I can't understand is why people with lower rig have better result than most of 700 user series with good better cpus and ram.

Then again, it could be my mother board and cpu nerfing my gpu but why only in ESO and not every other game I play with no problems in Ultra ?

I'd love to hear from Zenimax, even just to acknowledge this problem... cause atm, I feel kinda ignored, and I'm not the only one...

Ok tested out my ATI HD Radeon 6850, my GTX 650 TI, my new GTX 760 all on the same rig. There is only a modest boost between the ATI and the 650, maybe 5 fps and only 5 fps boost from the 650 to the 760. The 760 being the best card still only runs in cities around 30 fps and PvP is still a complete disaster. In order for me to play in PvP I have to lower settings to medium. My rig has 8 gigs of RAM and a 3.40 GHz quad core.

I don't know all it's depressing. I think I will take both the Nvidia cards back and just play on med settings on my old ATI card since the gain is marginal. Speaking with other players in game and in my guild it seems that the issue is not card related so I feel it's TESO not being optimized in certain areas or in certain features i.e. Draw distance, water, shadows, etc.

    Hi folks,

Adding my two cents here since I'm also experiencing this issue.

    My rig:

    Intel i5 2500k OC'ed to 4 Ghz.
    GTX 770. No OC.
16 GB corsair RAM at 1600 hz
Asrock Extreme 3 gen 3 motherboard.
    Corsair AX860i PSU
x2 OCZ 60 GB SSDs in raid 0.

    Windows 7 64 bit.

Running no other programs at all, (closing even Google chrome and steam, everything) I get about 40-45 ish in Daggerfall. I get about 50-60 in the wild, which is playable, but in Cyrodil and major cities my fps is far lower than I expect it to be on a computer like this.

I run everything at maximum, with Vsync off. Reinstalled drivers using the removal tool in this thread, back to the beta 337.50 Nvidia drivers. Shadowplay is off, just in-case that was related.

Worth noting that my CPU and GPU are barely being used to half of their capacity. I took a video to demonstrate, forgive the low quality, my phone's camera is poor. (Ignore the GPU meter shader clock speed, it never displayed it accurately).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCiUB1BXNiI&feature=youtu.be

This issue seems to me to be related towards the game not properly using all available hardware power. I'd wager those who have consistent fps are at full or near to full capacity on their GPUs.

    Included a Dxdiag as well.

Also having these issues on a good rig, cpu and gpu not even at 50% use.

The only graphics setting that makes any difference for me is the draw distance slider.

Dropping this to 75 gave me a good 15 to 20 fps increase in some areas.

Not been in the pvp zone yet, but if I'm getting low 30's in Daggerfall etc. I dread to think what it might be like there.

One 3 differents setup, the gpu is never used @100%. It's the only game i've with this behavior.
When i'm playing in windowed mode (max or not), the gpu don't go in idle mode when i minimize the windows. This is not a driver issue for me.

On Tamriel Foundry there has been an on-going discussion about ESO and FPS based on computer hardware. Is 37ish pages long and if nothing else can be interesting browse through.

Not saying this link will help but it is sorta interesting.
    http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/eso-performance-discussion-details-from-beta/

Myself I am running an MSI GTX760 and haven't really noticed a FPS drop significant enough to make me wonder what it was running at. I've checked on occasion and in the wild i stay around 60+, in PvP I'm not sure though, don't really PvP, but in the big main cities i usually drop around 45ish and stay between 45 and 55ish with an occassional drop to the high 30's.
Since the last patch I have been noticing an occasional stutter. Not sure if it was the patch or the latest NVIDIA drivers causing it though since i updated both at approx the same time. In case this is helpful at all I'll toss my PC specs at the bottom here. All drivers are up to date

I played with the view distance slider last night and it makes a HUGE difference in performance with not much change in graphic fidelity. It controls the render distance for ground clutter and props, but not other characters. Turning it down will reduce how far out the grass grows and how far forward you see things like glowing mushrooms and crates in underground areas.

I found I could drop this from 60ish down to 30 and not notice any graphic differences to speak of but it increased frame rate in cities from 35 to 50+. Below 30 the popup gets very noticeable, especially in dungeons.

I suggest that if you feel FPS is too low, try reducing this slider until you start noticing too much popup. You should find you can drop it quite a ways and get significant performance gains.

That sort of thing is usually a map bug (busted geometry makes your card spend some time contemplating the meaning of life and its amplified because of the water reflection), but it could also be caused by bad memory corrupting geometry in the system's RAM or the GPU's RAM.

One test for this would be to turn off water reflection and see if the problem still occurs or if its not as severe.

It made no difference for me. It's on every map, including Cyrodiil. Stuck at level 20 because I can't live long enough through a quest to complete it because the spike stops me in my tracks but the game goes on and the enemies are still able to put out a load of damage. I've tried lowering every setting and nothing has worked.
