When a friend or guildmate is set to ‘Do Not Disturb’ do you respect it or message them anyways?

Lately I’ve been using Do Not Disturb when I’m role playing but I still get messaged, or people port to my house anyways. I had one person tell me if I wanted left alone I should be in offline mode. What do you do? Respect it and not message, or message anyways?

The status indicator is too small to be of any use. If I don't want to be bothered, I set.myself to Off Line mode.

Ideally, DND should show and tally you as online but not allow communication, and Off Line should not show you at all, even to the point where you could be kicked for inactivity in say a Guild. Only DND would protect your Activity tally while preserving privacy.

I usually forget that statuses are a thing and only notice them if I'm looking at my friend list for some unrelated reason and wonder why someone's little person icon thing is a different color. So if I was like "I need to ask such-and-so a question" it probably wouldn't even occur to me to check my friend list to see if they were available.

But that's not because I'm trying to be rude, it's just not on my radar that things other than "online" and "offline" exist.

I see DnD as an advisory status that says, "I'm probably busy; don't expect me to respond".

People set DnD and forget that they had set DnD. Or people set DnD when they're busy, but will get around to reading the message when they're not. And if people really want to not receive a message period, that's what offline mode is for, since people not on their contacts/guild list will not see the status anyway.

I put other as it depends.

If it's a familiar then I'll just go ahead and message, they always respond.

If I don't know them as well, I won't message.

When I'm DND, which can be a lot - I reply to familiar names and ignore more random players.

I rarely message people, so I end up respecting the do not disturb by default.

In a rare occasion I do, it may be important enough to ignore the status indicator anyways, though this has yet to come up.

I don't find myself in that situation. If they're someone I'd be messaging, they're not the kind of player that uses a "do not disturb" option in an MMO.

If someone repeatedly messages me when I have it set to "Do Not Disturb" then they will go on my ignore list.

This mostly happens with people asking me to tank some vet content for them. If I have it set to DND but yet they repeatedly message me, it comes across as them not respecting my space/time and simply want me for what I can give them. I'm normally open to helping people and have my status set to "Online" 99% of the time, but during that other 1% that I have it set to DND I expect people to respect that.

I usually leave them alone. Worse case is posting in a guild chat if it's a smaller guild of friends (not like a huge trade guild) to see if they are around and forgot to change it back.

There are lots of reasons to want some privacy though, like if you're doing a guild activity and people keep asking you to do pledges or trials, or if you're farming because you need items and you want to focus on it, or if you're enjoying an immersive experience and want to be left to it until you choose to do other things.

I'm guilty of never looking at status. I thought the game took care of that stuff--if they're set to DND I thought it just wouldn't send a whisper through, and if I send one and it doesn't get answered I assume they're afk, and if I send one and it does get answered I would never know if they were on DND to begin with. Seems like a kind of useless setting, isn't it? It should pop back a message or something. LOTRO has a thing where it tells you if someone's AFK and you can mark yourself AFK, seems like that should be pretty simple if an old game like LOTRO can do it.

I use OFFLINE when I want to be completely left alone, and DND when I want people to know I'm busy and might not respond. However, I always assume DND means a person doesn't want to be contacted at all, and so I respect that. If it's something important and/or the person has been DND for a long time (days), then I'll take a chance they might have forgotten to change their status, and send a mail message. I figure that's less intrusive.

Well, it's not disturbing when it's something important, isn't it. And I know ppl who are always on dnd just cause ppl spam to them about everything. I just don't spam to them, send short message or even a mail.

in general I tend to leave DND people alone, with exception of some sort of potential emergency (hence my choice, I have people on my friends list that i'm not guilded with) that requires urgency (if its something I need to contact them for, but it doesn't require immediate response - there's always in game mail if I know I won't stay logged in long enough to wait for DND status to come off)

for me though, I am perpetually in offline mode. I just find it easier. and it still lets me talk in guild, group or /say, so..
