Character names, lore-breaking or no, can put a smile on my face...
some of the @ names... not so much.
Not even sure how some of these are allowed or why anyone would want them.

This might be a bit of a personal issue...I am somoene who always chooses an RP server if only so i dont have to deal with all the "Noobhunter5000XXX" of this world.

Been up all nite, haven't read all the comments, but will later when I wake up, just wanted to say this, so not sure if said or not.

Looks at user name, then wonders what the issue is. How can you really be complaining 7884? ;P

As long as the names are not violating the ToS, they are fine.

While I do find seeing some names a bit immersion breaking, it s nothing compared to the appearance of some characters and their pets, combat or non-combat.

I read a theory by another player somewhere here, stating that all other player character s are simply shards of the same Vestige, with a varying probability of such characters existing at all, ranging from almost identical to so different they are totally absurd.

I claim the whole issue to be the doing of Uncle Sheo (edit: damned automatic corrections). And the fact that ESO is an MMORPG too. :)

What annoys me more is that a low, level crafting toon I have with trash gear and literally no skills or attribute points slotted, can just stroll into a delve, use light attacks only to collect skyshards AND NEVER DIE.

Now that is the real lore breaking in this game and its why I stopped playing overland content!

they amuse me mostly. these are not the players/characters I would ever be roleplaying with so.. /shrug. I'm pretty comfortable with compartmentalizing my gaming experience this way. well that and it would be extremely hypocritical of me to be bothered by lore breaking names, when gosh... 2/3 of my characters have lore breaking (or at least lore bending) names themselves (I tend to bring over the same character archetypes from mmo to mmo, and their original names come with them, including my main.)

In the beginning I cringed hard every time I saw a lore breaking name. But this being an MMO, I took a deep breath and decided to "fix it" by installing addons that would hide the user and character names. It is now, thankfully, a feature in the game's settings - so I would suggest anyone annoyed by names use these settings, and additionally any addon that they can find.

Because at the end of the day, if someone wants to be called "G-Fuel leet Four twen Ty", that's their personal problem (ehem, I mean "preference...").

Lore breaking names don't bother me
Naming rules already exist and tbh I've probably seen more RPers breaking them than not. Not sure what kind of gatekeeping goes on in that community, but several players that consider themselves RPers definitely name their characters after other existing copyrighted characters in other works of fiction, which I thought was against TOS. And if you are that in the RP mindset, then your character won't even know what some words mean like Noob as modern slang doesn't exist in ESO, so it would just appear to be a 'name' like any other made up word that's a name.

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some nasty and/or stupid 'funny' names people try to come up with, but some are quite clever and imo make the game more interesting. And no, you don't deserve a special server just for you and your friends personally in a multi-player game. I don't like the precedent that sets - for one there aren't enough to support a server I'd bet (considering they won't create a server for asia/australia b/c there wouldn't be enough players), but what other groups deserve their own private servers so they don't have to interact with others they don't want to expose themselves to?

I have to add a caveat to my previous comment that "lore-breaking" in itself doesn't bother me, it's the gross ones that do. References to bodily waste, explicit sexual stuff, etc. I just find kind of gross and it makes me imagine that the toon has a horrible smell and want to avoid interacting with them. Silly stuff does not bother me at all, it's kind of fun to see how many TES puns people can come up with in their naming. Sometimes it's odd what the game moderators will actually change, though. I have a friend who had a forced name change on a Khajiit named "Spayed'N'Delirious." I guess the "spayed" part was offensive to some khajiiti, who knows. But I see a lot of really crude overtly sexual or filthy stuff out there that slips through the cracks and that's the only thing I wish they'd be more strict about.

Lore breaking names don't bother me
I do think the game should stick to the lore whenever possible, because it makes the game world more real if it has consistency.

I don't think additional naming rules fall into that category for me. I chose to play this game because it was an MMO. I actually went into it knowing no lore, although I've learned a lot after my years of playing! So, expecting everyone to have "lore friendly" names seems like it could end up discouraging players new to the Elder Scrolls world.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.
