    I like surveys.

They give you an excuse to go rambling about in different areas and explore some. One of the best aspects of this game is it's world design and how you can be productive in nearly any corner of Tamriel at any level.

Treasure Maps I'm less fond of. Their hints are not sufficient and you end up having to visit google. I hate game play that involves needing to google. But surveys are fun.

I love the surveys. Generally I will just bank them unless it is in a zone I'm working on. At some point I will grab surveys for a particular zone, usually once I have at least 4-5 for that zone, then go out to collect them. The helper app I use on my tablet has their locations so I'll plot out a route and get to it. It's a very good way for me to keep a stockpile of mats without needing to farm so much.

Treasure maps, I don't particularly like. Frequently I put in a fair bit of time to find them without much usable return. I've been collecting all of mine but don't really go through the effort unless the zone is one with drops I want. Such as Mother's Sorrow/Deshaan. I've been known to give away surveys to people who ask about them or list a few in the guild bank. I have seen people sell them but the price is so low I usually don't even bother.

I don't mind collecting the surveys. Refining all the mats I don't care much for lol.

I need to do these in the day I get them. Yes, I *really* need to do these on the day I get them. One of these days, I will actually start doing these on the day I get them...

    Soon.

Surveys are just free mats and tempers - a total handout for almost zero effort. There are very good add ons which show you exactly where they are. A serious percentage of the mats I use for the writs themselves and the many gold and other tempers I have (more handouts) came from refining survey mats - so I never have to farm individual nodes.

So I don't understand why people don't like them or don't do them.

Surveys give me something to do when I'm waiting for a Cyro or dungeon queue to pop. If you have multiple for a particular site, you only need to ride far enough away to get the area to redraw and the nodes will respawn.

    Easy.

5 pages of lazy players crying about free mats gets necro'd, why?

Yeah. It's weird. People get free stuff and complain it's too hard. Come to my house and hand it to me.

Now, I understand the complaint of the Console users. I doubt I would do surveys without the addon. But if you are on PC, it's free stuff. A lot of the locations are literally right next to wayshrines. If you are on console, check google to see if there are maps out there. At least your searching could be quicker.

Or get The ESO app. I like that it actually describes the location, as the in-game map zoom is often inadequate (okay, and I need new glasses). I find it much more convenient than looking it up on my laptop.
This, the ESO app is the best thing ever for console players. Marks surveys, skyshards, delves, mage books, public dungeons, treasure chests. Has a thing for alchemy where you put in what traits you want in your potions and give a list of all possible herb combinations. Also has maps for all the delves and public dungeons.

What do you mean you get 30 a day? How many wrote a day are you doing? You can only have 15 chars and each char doesn’t get a survey a day.

If you’re doing them on multiple accounts why?!

I am so confused right now.

Writs have about a 12.5% drop rate 1 in 8. So 30 a day would be 240 writs... only 6 drop surveys, so I'd say 40 characters.

That being said. I like collecting writs. Tons of mats, refining gives lots of gold mats. I don't know why you wouldn't collect them. Writs are virtually self-sufficient with the surveys + mat return changes with Wraithstone

Saw a useful tip on the forums the other day. Get to the survey spot, pick up the nodes, port to a house you don't own, walk out the door and you are back at the spot with nodes refreshed.

It saves riding some indeterminate distance away and back which can be a real pain in some swampy or forested zones.
Faster to just ride 100 meter away and return i think.

    No; sometimes they don't refresh

Yes they do you just have to make sure theres a mountain or something blocking the sight!

I don't pick all at once since it becomes very mind numbing to do so. Last year I left all pile up for 6 months, then picked them up in 5 consecutive days and it was painful. So I decided to let them stack for 6 months in any given zone, then collect 4 zones every month. My schedule is:

    1) January/July: Alik'r, Craglorn 1, Craglorn 2, Craglorn 3
    2) February/August: Auridon, Bangkorai, Coldharbour 1, Coldharbour 2
    3) March/September: Deshaan, Eastmarch, Glenumbra, Grahtwood
    4) April/October: Greenshade, Malalal Tor, Reaper's March, Rivenspire
    5) May/November: Shadowfen, Stonefalls, Stromhaven, The Rift
    6) June/December: Vvardenfell, Wrothgar 1, Wrothgar 2, Wrothgar 3

It takes around 3-4 hours to do that, and 1 hour to refine, so around 4-5 hours in total. The pickup day is the Sunday closest to the start of the moth. For example this year the pickup days were 30.12 (1), 03.02 (2), 03.03 (3).

With the new changes in Wrathstone I get 15 units refunded each time I do a writ, so the cost per writ has decreased from ~40 to ~25 units. I also recover materials from the intricate items I deconstruct - only jewelry is still worth selling to guild traders, since it's still 750-800 gold per item, but others are just ~150 so for me it's not worth wasting a slot with them. I also pick up materials as I go after sky shards, quests, books on my characters - all are maxed out crafters already so I pick maximum tier materials only - they eventually get promoted to combat ready as they fill their skills and passives with those. On top of that I deconstruct all silk items, some of the wood ones - those materials are still expensive, around 30-35 gold per unit - as well as any items that are blue or better quality and/or contain rarer style materials, unless they are part of a set, have good traits and can go on sale on guild stores; if they don't meed any of the condition they get sold to NPC. I pick up everything but since I have 200 bag slots on all characters with only 50-100 taken up by gear and consumables, so I only need to do bag cleanup at the end of the day, and it takes 1-2 minutes. Since Wrathstone dropped my materal stocks have barely decreased, and extrapolating by the usual survey drop rate I may actually gain a surplus at the end of this month when I'll pick up the next series of surveys 31.03 (4). So surveys are definitely worth doing.

It's really terrible as a console player trying to complete these. At first I had physical journals to remind me where to go, then I started compiling pdf's from guide sites with wayshrine locations and whatnot. But most recently I started taking pictures of each location of each survey to store on my PS4. There aren't folders to store the photos in so I have to rename the photos which is a pain... I honestly... I just don't understand why my character in game has to be so mentally challenged that he cannot take the time to document the locations of these surveys. Why can't they be marked on the map after finding them the first time????

As for completing the writs themselves, I craft consumables like alchemy and provisioning in mass quantities, then for the other skill lines I craft 2 everything plus an extra set for whatever the turn in is on the day I craft on. It takes up a lot of inventory on each character, but what I like is that I can craft everything at my house once a week, then just login some chars for turn ins then log out.

I am envious of those of you who have multiple accounts of 15 chars running these regularly. Someone said they had 3 accounts doing this? If they're all 50+ then that means you're bringing in something like 200k a day in gold from completing the writs alone? It makes me wonder how long it takes to run through that many characters - maybe an hour per account?

Just use the add on that tells you exactly where they are.

Takes a few seconds. Deleting them is just throwing away gold. The jewellery crafting surveys are amazing for making quick money.

For console I think the best solution is to have the maps loaded on a different device and look trough them as you go. For example you can look up this map and search the current survey. https://esomap.uesp.net/
