I was really surprised at launch when I found out that this didn't work.
Other MMOs like STO do it without any issues, I don't see why ESO couldn't.

I'm sorry, but this isn't Skyrim. Try adding a surname to your character's name.
I'll tell you it's more immersive than seeing Drizzzzzt, LeGoLaS and Str1d3r running around everywhere.

There is no debate to be had here. Character names need to be unique because that is what you see when you look at people in the game. If want to contact them when they are no longer around, you can use their character name to make that happen.

You usually can't even know their account name if they aren't in your guild or grouped (I believe grouping shows it, but I don't remember offhand).

I hate to be that guy but man some of you get worked up at the silliest stuff.

No one is going to call you just “joe” no matter what you name him. They will call you your @ name unless you are in an rp guild. They will ask you constantly about your lack of last name so better come up with some kind of orphan backstory if that’s the case.

Just name the character “useless name” here because that’s about what it adds up to.

    This is incorrect.

You can set in game what you see when you mouse over people.

For instance I only see your @ name.

I share a first and last name with someone who signed the Declaration of Independence. I am also a Junior. I have met at least 30 other people with my same first and last name. I rarely use my entire name (legal documents, mostly) and don't even use my first name often as it's very common itself.

Like Indiana Jones, I have spent most of my life with a nickname that, while not unique, is very uncommon. I know of only one other place where it was used.

Anyway, even with a surname or clan name, you aren't necessarily going to get the name you want. I have an account that is just Nords. The father and his seven daughters. When I finally got around to creating the last character, the name I wanted was taken on the NA server. I was a little surprised, I mean, I had "invented" a "unique" clan name for my Nords. Someone "stole" my name!

Tl/dr: naming characters in this game is the one activity in my life that forces me to be creative. I like it.

We have different account names, why can't we have the same character name?

In Skyrim you can name the character your name, it's immersive. So when I played ESO I tried to name myelf Joseph "NAME TAKEN" grrr how about Josephe "NAME TAKEN" k what about Josef " NAME TAKEN" OH MY GOODNESS, HOW ABOUT JOSEIPH "..taken ;)"

I think it would simplify things and make it more immersive to just be able to have the same name.

    EDIT:

To answer some of the biggest arguments presented

    1) its not immersive to meet people with the same name,

    A. In real life people have the same name, I can't tell you how many Joseph's I've met

    2) how would we communicate properly without unique names?

    A. We have unique account names

Agreed 1000% I've played mmos which actually allow you to use decent names its refreshing and fun.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

Because we have the capability to invite by character name

Allowing duplicate names means that functionality would have to be deleted and I doubt that’s a sought after consequence

Edit: also, just give your char a last name, not yours.. >_>

I haven't had any trouble coming up with unique names for my characters. In fact, I really love the challenge! There's something special about knowing no one else has a character in this game with the same name as my own ones.

The argument that, 'imagine all the Gandalfs, Legolas, Drizzt', etc... running around.' just proves ZoS doesn't strictly enforce the TOS ... that states you are not supposed to use actual names taken from other works..... copyright laws being what they are. So there shouldn't even be one of those, much less hundreds.

Huh, it makes me type the account name in all of those instances. I don’t have a chat addon either. Maybe I just haven’t paid attention but I’ve never used the character name for those systems.

I can't remember anyone asking about any of my one-named characters. I mean if they really want to know I can tell them why they don't have or don't use their family names, but no one's ever asked.

As for what people call you I've found it varies. I've had a hard time sometimes contacting guild officers, crafters etc. because everyone refers to them by one of their character names and until I see them online on that character (or as someone for their account name) I don't know who they are. Other people are called exclusively by their account name, or a shorted version of it.

(Most people call me Dani which could be either, or both, it's a short version of both my account name and my 2 main characters names.)

KInda selfish considering the benefits to being able to name your character what you want far outweigh any downsides. Unless you are the kind of gamer who doesnt care about their character and is happy using a dumb name like "Uncle L33thaxors"

Also, I've got 20 characters - all of them have surnames, and none of the names were taken.

I kinda wished they did it how cryptic does it. The way they do it allows players to have the same name if they wanted too. Here you can't really do that. But I think that would make they would have to tie the @name and character name together. Well as long as you have a unique last name I think you might be able to have the same name as another player. So there is that.

Some time ago I ran into a bug which would deliver the mails I sent to @Friend to a @RandomPlayer who had a character named 'Friend', whenever the @Friend person was offline. Regardless of what I did and how many times I got the name right, they would consistently be delivered to the wrong person.

Having people share names would most likely make this issue much more common.
