Why can't players have the same name?

KInda selfish considering the benefits to being able to name your character what you want far outweigh any downsides. Unless you are the kind of gamer who doesnt care about their character and is happy using a dumb name like "Uncle L33thaxors"

I care about all my characters, I just don’t feel the need to give them rp names and backstories and make up a bunch of fantasy surrounding each character.

I’m not saying it’s bad if someone does these things, to each their own.

I usually try to come up with a name that means something to ME. or that I think is humorous or might fit the character.

Also there are a BUNCH of technical downsides letting 2 chars share a name as pointed out by several people in this thread.

Zos would have to do a bunch of work that isn’t warranted to achieve it.

I’d rather they focus on bug fixes and performance.

There is no debate to be had here. Character names need to be unique because that is what you see when you look at people in the game. If want to contact them when they are no longer around, you can use their character name to make that happen.

You usually can't even know their account name if they aren't in your guild or grouped (I believe grouping shows it, but I don't remember offhand).
    This is incorrect.

You can set in game what you see when you mouse over people.

For instance I only see your @ name.

The nameplates I see are set to character name. If the person is no longer around, you can't mouse over, but I did just check and, and I see both account and character name. So you are correct.

There are systems which allow people to have the same name, specifically discord being one of them. I can be yoda amongst 1,000 yodas, but there is a unique identifier for each account, the same as here.

so @yoda#2247 and @yoda2346 can be in the same exact room and pinging @yoda would not work, since the display name is not the identified name.

Game names work a bit like DNS servers, its easier to go to elderscrollsonline.com than to go to 104.18.197.24 beyond the fact that its behind ddos protection anyway.

The point is, in a MMO there are two reasons I can think of to limit the names of people.

    1. Prestige. Having @bob is something that will cause someone to play the game longer, you have something that others don't have and you feel special, which keeps you playing.
    2. No one wants to type @bob#2435 to get to bob, because thats the only way multiple @bob could exist. You would have to know both their account name and their user name, which is more information than some people may want to give. I know its public information in this game, but you would have to do @yodased#yoda to talk to me, kind of a pain in the ass than just @yodased.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

I already find it quite bothersome that all guild members know your account name...

We have different account names, why can't we have the same character name?

In Skyrim you can name the character your name, it's immersive. So when I played ESO I tried to name myelf Joseph "NAME TAKEN" grrr how about Josephe "NAME TAKEN" k what about Josef " NAME TAKEN" OH MY GOODNESS, HOW ABOUT JOSEIPH "..taken ;)"

I think it would simplify things and make it more immersive to just be able to have the same name.

    EDIT:

To answer some of the biggest arguments presented

    1) its not immersive to meet people with the same name,

    A. In real life people have the same name, I can't tell you how many Joseph's I've met

    2) how would we communicate properly without unique names?

    A. We have unique account names

How would we get Mail without unique names?

Joseph could also add a last name. Or even a Hyphen. I have a character Vic-tor. Victor was already taken.
Just get a little creative Josepf.

The better question to ask would've been, "Is it possible for a game to function properly where multiple users with the same username?"

    The answer is, subsequently, no.

In today's world, EVERYONE who plays knows your account name. There's no way around it. Anyone can see your account name.

In some ways i find that... disturbing. However, since I post here on (one of...) my account names.... it's a good thing. I can be held to standards that other games I played did not offer.

There are good reasons for the situation as it exists. I've had to deal with the.... other side. I'm not in favor of a return to - the wild west of non-accountability.

Ok I thought only guildies could see it.

For me it's not about accounability but about security. As someone who has spent a bit time on brute forcing during the early days, knowing the account name for a specific site/service is a huge leap towards taking an account.

Now obviously today's systems have IP and device authentication checks making it a lot harder. Still bothersome though.

It took me a long time to get past the "OMG someone knows my account name" syndrome. The major thing is a (mostly, more or less) unbreakable password. My pws for everywhere (including here) are 24+ characters (no, I don't use "real world" words/phrases). Of course I can't remember them. It's a crapshoot - either I write them down on a physical piece of paper assuming I will always have control of it - or I put it in a non-physical "vault".... which I also can't assume is inviolable.

I choose the latter simply because I (at this point in my life) have less issues with the non-physical vault than I do with a piece of paper.

    Neither is.... optimal.... of course.

One time I called someone in Zone Chat by their account name and they hurled a ton of abuse at me about being some kind of creepy stalker and hacker for using it. Even when it was pointed out to them many times that there is an option in the settings to have the game show account names instead of character names they still didn't get it.

The reason I have it set that way is because when you PVP, players often have multiple characters that they switch between, so it is useful to be able to spot friends/regular pvpers that you know, rather than have to try and remember multiple character names for each person.

oh please. Good luck finding 100 people in an entire city of 1 million with the exact same name - which includes first, middle and last in the name.

    THAT is real life.

I like having unique character names and I put thought into each of them. Of course, I did also grow up with a girl a grade ahead of me with the same first, middle, and last name and absolutely no relation. Lots of mix-ups including a scare when she attempted suicide and my sister got a phone call from someone expressing their condolences. It's NICE to have a unique name!

I find it quite interesting that ZoS / mods of forum / and everyone else here just glosses over the ToS naming requirements that are obviously not enforced.

The rules are enforced when the inappropriate name gets reported. Approximately 0.3 seconds after the player who picked the inappropriate/not legal name gets the message "You must change your inappropriate/not legal name before you can log into the game" the person starts super salty ranting threads on the forum about how they are getting picked on and how unfair it is that they have to change their name because who cares about copyright crap ? Why would anyone bother to report me for a stupid name anyway? Even when the name was something along the lines of BooBoo[4 letter word that begins with f and ends with ck]Kitty the concept of "inappropriate and/or not legal" seems to be one that some players have great difficulty grasping.
