I'll tell you it's more immersive than seeing Drizzzzzt, LeGoLaS and Str1d3r running around everywhere.Nothing says immersive like 100 (or more) people running around with the exact same name...
I'm sorry, but this isn't Skyrim. Try adding a surname to your character's name.
This is incorrect.DaveMoeDee wrote: »There is no debate to be had here. Character names need to be unique because that is what you see when you look at people in the game. If want to contact them when they are no longer around, you can use their character name to make that happen.
You usually can't even know their account name if they aren't in your guild or grouped (I believe grouping shows it, but I don't remember offhand).
I doubt you have met many people with the same first and last name.
We have different account names, why can't we have the same character name?
In Skyrim you can name the character your name, it's immersive. So when I played ESO I tried to name myelf Joseph "NAME TAKEN" grrr how about Josephe "NAME TAKEN" k what about Josef " NAME TAKEN" OH MY GOODNESS, HOW ABOUT JOSEIPH "..taken"
I think it would simplify things and make it more immersive to just be able to have the same name.
EDIT:
To answer some of the biggest arguments presented
1) its not immersive to meet people with the same name,
A. In real life people have the same name, I can't tell you how many Joseph's I've met
2) how would we communicate properly without unique names?
A. We have unique account names

The mailing system, whisper system and many integral parts of the game's communication system works on a character basis. I can't see this ever being changed.

You can set in game what you see when you mouse over people.
For instance I only see your @ name.
I hate to be that guy but man some of you get worked up at the silliest stuff.
No one is going to call you just “joe” no matter what you name him. They will call you your @ name unless you are in an rp guild. They will ask you constantly about your lack of last name so better come up with some kind of orphan backstory if that’s the case.
Just name the character “useless name” here because that’s about what it adds up to.
