You can use the name you want if it's taken, just add a second name to it.

The mailing system, whisper system and many integral parts of the game's communication system works on a character basis. I can't see this ever being changed.

I agree that adding a surname is a good solution. It's immersive; most people in Tamriel have a family/clan/house/other affiliation name, or a 'title' of some type, single word names are not unheard of but relatively unusual. And the chances of another player choosing the exact same first and last name you did are pretty low, unless you're copying both from the same place (Jon Snow will almost certainly be taken for example).

On the other hand I also agree that there's not really any reason games should require character names to be unique. It's entirely possible to build a database which can handle people with identical names by using other bits of information to tell them apart. It's pretty much essential these days because many databases have to handle millions of real people and you can hardly tell someone they have to change their real name because your system already has someone called that.

But unfortunately I think that's the kind of thing which has to be built into the system from the start because it's not easy to change it once it's been created and used. So even if ZOS agreed it's probably too late to fix it now.

That seems totally realistic to me. My name's Katy and I was one of four Katy/ie's in my French class in school and I'm forever getting emails intended for other Katy's at my company. I'd be very surprised if there's less than 100 of us in the world.

This is not singleplayer, simple add a surname and you will get whatever name you want, unless your surname is a really common one. All my characters have the same surname, kind of a family.

So then what speaks against having to use a last name to create a unique name combination when your first name is already taken?

I just prefer being called " Joseph" instead of "hello Joseph (last name)" by everyone, it's just a preference thing

Sure, we have unique account names, but imagine two people with the same name are starting to talk in zone chat. Unless you have speech bubbles activated and just happen to be standing next to one of them, you won't know who said what. Not to mention that people will take the name of famous players they don't like and fake screenshots of them saying terrible things.

Granted that people with the same name exist in the real world too (first AND last name), imagine if you are in an RP guild and literally every high elf is called Elenwen, Galadriel or Tauriel. You can't have immersive roleplay if the only way to distinguish your Galadriels is by talking to them with their account name - XxXNoobhunterXxX.

Moral of the story: use a last name as well if your first name is so important to you.

Where I grew up there were 2 other girls in my school with the same exact first and last name. Thank goodness we were all in different years. The staff learned the hard way to add "sophomore", "junior" or "senior" when calling one of us to the office. Woohoo for having a very common first and last name.

Agreed. I want to name my Magden Telos but noooooooo. Name taken. RIP the only rp type thing I'd ever do.
