Why are there more players on the PC Servers than Console servers?

Actually eso was designed for consoles... ever wondered why there’s 5 skills on each bar? Because that’s what fits on a controller.

@Saint314Louis1985 Wrong. ESO has 5 buttons because it was balanced around that (6 if you include ulti)

FFXIV has proven you can fit up to 16 abilities on one bar

Console players can be as insufferable as PvPeeps. The fact is that a non Steam PC ZOS gives you the best possible experience. BTW, you can run this game just fine on a $500 PC.

“Just fine”? You mean on medium settings, with subsampling set to medium? Because looking at bestbuy.ca and newegg.ca, that’s about what I’d get for a new PC in the $500 range.

do you honestly think that consoles run games on ultra settings? they don't btw.

oh and one other thing. becasue it IS personal preference, I saw above someone complaining about having to map keys. inability to map my keys is the number one reason I personal prefer playing on pc. and I HAVE a console. I have nothing against consoles. its a personal choice. but every time I die on a console becasue I switched games and on one of them x was "go into cover" while on the other x is "vault over cover" and there is NOTHING I can do about it other then try to relearn muscle memory each time a switch? I long for ability to standardize my keybinds like I can on PC.

plug and play functionality of a console is awesome. but not all of us actualy want plug and play. some of us actualy prefer to tweak or experience. and BOTH are fine, one is NOT inherently superior to the other. its... gasp.. a PERSONAL PREFERENCE!

LOL, no, I don’t think console is ultra... I do know it’s not medium with medium subsampling, though. :) How do I know? Because that’s how I had to play the game on my $600 PC before I switched to PS4.

except consoles generally run games on medium. how do I know? there are a few games I have on both console and PC in part becasue I loved them enough to want to play them that many times (hi Tomb Raider reboots, and I still cannot decide which version I prefer to be honest), and some I got through ps plus and in case of Division - I oroginaly played it on ps4, but then my SO got into it, so we both got pc copies to play together. I also happen to have steamlink so I have streamed my pc games onto my TV screen. the biggest difference I saw was with Division, but it wasn't the only one that I saw a difference with. console graphics and framerates are medium..ish settings in vast majority of cases, at least when it comes to AAA titles. it doesn't seem glaring unless you play them side by side... which I did.

I will say this much. I'm very VERY thankful for games coming out on both consoles and PC. why? becasue console hardware limitations means developers cannot push game graphics to the point where i HAVE to buy a new PC to play them. back in a day of pc exclusive AAA games you had to update your PC more often. nowadays, becasue it has to look and run good enough on all platforms - the only settings that push hardware are of the higher variety, and so you can get away with playing on an older PC. its nice.

Console developers also generally manage to optimize games pretty well for the limitations. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4 are absolutely gorgeous. Yeah, PC will always have better graphical options, but the price point still favours consoles for people who want to game inexpensively and without fuss. I could not walk into a store today and buy a new PC that allows me to play ESO (or any other game, for that matter) at the same quality as my PS4 for the same price.

A tale as old as time, PC and the Console. I prefer PC because graphic fidelity. It did in fact cost $1200 to build my rig so I'm not gonna judge one side or the other. My main goal was to reduce graphic pop-in that happened on my old rig due to slow texture loading. Was the game playable? Yes. Was it pretty? Not usually. So goal achieved, I have a computer that will last me into the 20s and is easily upgradeable if it does not. Console is....ok and playing on a controller is easy and intuitive. I even play on PC with a cheap Logitech dual stick. But for communication I much prefer KB over having to use a mic. I'm not particularly chatty and that upsets people whenever I join Discord or TS. This is only magnified on PSN when that's largely the only way to communicate. So while I do have the game on PS I rarely plug it in. I have a substantial backlog on console, almost as bad as my Steam games.

'not as good' is a bit of a statement. Personally i prefer it. PC has too many grey areas for me.

Do you have platform numbers from ZOS or is this a guesstimate? Not having a pop just curious on stats. If you take views of patch notes as a lead, 50k PC, 22k Xbox 13k PS4. HOWEVER as you can tell if you frequent the forum daily the vast majority of folk here are on PC. I'm one of a few i know in Xbox EU that come here, most console players aren't aware it exists (which is an issue in itself as i say later)

Personally i think its simpler, you assume its the experience comparison but i doubt that. I think first of all games been out alot longer on PC and secondly its MORE a PC style of game. Most console players i know shift between games fast and are more into instant gratification games - FPS etc.

This is a vast game, and a new genre to Console in this format. It's that simple i would say.

Additionally you need an online resource to get anywhere with this game. Most console games aren't like that and i bet many copies are sat i used as folks didn't even get out of Davons Watch without thinking WTF am i doing.

@Beardimus I'm just quoting you because you bring up a valid point that many PC players use as a basis for determining platform populations --- forum activity. This is not in direct response to you.

PC voices are the loudest and most frequent on the forums because, get this, forums are best viewed on a PC. I could, theoretically, fumble my way through the Xbox interface, using a web browser, and view the forums *barf*, or I could view the seriously crippled mobile version of the forums on my phone, but it's by far more convenient to view them on a laptop or desktop PC.

A lot of console users simply don't do that. I do it at work during my down times, as I'm sure a majority of the console players that frequent here do as well. Bottom line, if I'm at home and have access to the console, I'm going to be playing the game, not searching the forums.

TL;DR - Console users don't use the forums as much as PC because they're not easily accessible on our native platforms. Basing platform population off forum activity, therefore, is a biased statistic.

Doesn't count the wide screen TV either..

Who purchases Gold or PSN for full price? No one other than family members that don't know any better. Then there's the fact, most people don't purchase games for full price either. Here in the UK console games usually retail for £40-50. again, no one pays those prices. Don't think i've paid more than £35 for a new release this gen. Same with consoles. Too many bargains/sales out there that no one should be paying the RRP for any console.

I mean, I should be paying £450 for this console: https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/xbox-one-x-shadow-of-the-tomb-raider-fifa-19-37378-microsoft-swiss-3057945

But next to no one does. You're graphs are meaningless to most people other than grandparents that walk into any old shop and pay the first price they lay their eyes on.

As for my widescreen TV. Here's a revelation, I didn't just purchase it to play games on. Crazy i know, but it's possible to watch normal TV on it. hell, even watch blu rays etc.

You still use it to play games on so it gets added into the original cost, i do other things on my desktop and watch blurays on it too but my monitor still goes into the cost of my PC..

How would you play those games without your fancy tv.

your comparing apples with oranges. a $500 pc will not be running the same spec RAM (DDR5) as the consoles , nor will it be running a 4k graphics card. Nor will the processors have as many cores or be as good.

in addition, you've put the games on consoles as more expensive. they are roughly the same price here in the UK. in fact the steam version of ESO on PC is £10 MORE than the xb1x version in game at the moment.

in terms of pure math, your graph is flawed by those two facts.

The specs for the pc are below and they are of similar spec to Xbox one and PS4

Hmmm, I've just (three days ago) switched from pc to console, already had an xbox one s and a ps4 anyhow.

Reason being is that I'm one of those clowns who continuously feels an urge to upgrade and after checking up on the prices of the latest top gpu's and cpu's I've said now knackers to it and jumped off the bandwagon.

I've slapped a 60" 4k TV on my desk, hooked up the xbone and ran the audio out into an amp and mahoosive pair of speakers, I park my cakehole in a leather recliner with my feet on a footstool and I'm having a blast, played for sixteen hours straight yesterday (cups of coffee and snacks delivered by housemate, thanks buddy).

As for the graphics and game play, no problem at all, game still looks great and game play is perfectly acceptable and has the added bonus of everybody being on level ground ie no add ons.

Right, time to hammer the crafting and research, I miss my Julianos.

Heads up... I stopped playing PC games with Oblivion because it got too expensive to continually upgrade a PC. More of my ESO friends - console players also - are adults than not. Could I afford a PC capable of running ESO now? Sure, but a) I couldn't justify it and b) I wouldn't want to start over. Also c) 55" 4k TV.

But you cant see those 4k details when you're on the couch sitting down. Downscaled 4k

The difference is not that Big. Just slightly better in Gameplay that's all.

That's why people play on PC. Well that and PC Master race.

I think it's because PC is more customizable and better graphics. But that still wont persuade me to buy a PC. I enjoy my PS4.

price point is minor to nonexistant reason to chose one over the other in the end, even when it comes to game costs. convenience or costumizability? absolutely. general preference of controller over keyboard or the other way around - yes, of course (not all PC games have proper controller support, though ESO does, good for ZoS). whether you want to be stuck paying for premium services in order to be able to play online? yep, definitely. price? not in a while.

I'm a console gamer. I spend all day (work from home) at a PC with a mouse and keyboard. That's the last place I want to be when the work day is over. ESO in HDR is beautiful, and it runs really well on the PS4 Pro.

I understand why people say PCs have more horsepower, and I don't doubt it. But for me, being able to chill on the couch in the evenings with just ESO, a controller and a nice big 4K HDR TV makes me happy.

The "PCs have more horsepower" thing is mostly irrelevant when considering the populations on both platforms, imo. Most people I know who play ESO on PC have significantly less horsepower than current gen consoles. Let's not even speak of our poor Mac brethren.

      I really think it's just preference/convenience.

      its exactly what it is.

it just so happens that MMO's including ESO are relatively new to consoles, while they have been on PC for decades. so PC has a headstart first and foremost.

P.S. Uncharted and Horizon zero dawn are THE reason why I originally got a console. honestly? if ps4 didn't have such amazing exclusives, I would have happily stuck to my personal PC gaming preference.
