This was unexpected. What is it for?
If I had to guess, might it have something to do with Crown Store Gifting? If that is the case, that's remarkable that you could get a fix in so quickly--under 24 hours--and even take the server down for it! Surely this means that the next time you discover a major problem--e.g., breaking 6 item sets--you could revert the change that caused the bug in under 24 hours instead of waiting a whole week... right?
I never accepted the current type of crown store gifting.
Players were exploiting it left and right, selling numerous crown store items for gold.
It is literally gold buying through the sale of crown store items.
I hope that by taking down the crown store gifting for investigation, ZOS is considering how to restrict crown store gifting so it won't be exploited.
While they said it's ok to trade crown store item for gold, it became ridiculous how fast players were accumulating massive amounts of gold.
Maybe they finally changed their mind about this and restrict or disallow it by some manner.
I suggested the following as the first step:
"Please limit the number of gifts an account can deliver, for example:
1 gift of 1-500 crowns per week.
1 gift of 501-1,000 crowns per month.
1 gift of 1,001-1,500 crowns per 2 months.
1 gift of 1,501-3,000 crowns per 3 months.
1 gift of 3,001-5,000+ crowns per 6 months. "

Given it's the only time some Oceanics get to play and there's very little wiggle room for missing days with this month's daily login, I can only assume ZOS is struggling to tax the NPCs high enough to pay out the 100k gold per personEither way, I’m annoyed. I’m working all weekend and was looking forward to some early morning PVPing tomorrow.Would be nice to know why the servers are going down.

Excellent 6pm on a Friday night. What's up ESO, think everyone in Oz and Asia needs to get out more?

There's important, there's game breaking, and then there's "Holy ***, this could be really, really bad."
Important can wait until the next scheduled update. Game breaking can go either way depending on just how game breaking it is.
But a sudden, unexpected server shutdown coupled with the disabling of one of the systems and a vague message of "Um, so, we kind of found an issue that we need to fix so we're gonna just turn that off for now"? Yeah, that kinda sounds like the third one.

Perhaps, but wouldn’t servers be going down for patch maintenance (not just maintenance) if that were the case?
