If other games are working on Steam, and THIS game is not, who is really at fault? Seems to me like this is both an issue for ZoS and Steam together.

My game works fine and i play eso through steam. so idk who's fault it's

Your second statement (youre dont know who's fault it's) is not a consequence of the first (your game works fine). Therefore, "So" is superfluous. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Other games may be fine on steam, that's comparing apples to oranges, they are different games

I find it more plausible it's a combination of both but they just keep pointing fingers at each other instead of dealing with the problem

It is an important comparison to make because if many other games were having issues then you could point the finger squarely at Steam. Which is not the case here.

    Not necessarily

They are different games with different distribution systems and different coding.

One application/program may get along with another fine but not with a 3rd completely different one simply because they are just different enough to make it difficult

    That is exactly my point....

ESO just had a major update and Steam did not.

That means something that changed in the ESO code is interacting poorly with steam. Thank you for agreeing with me. I will take 1 agree pls.

I quote from the following thread (german): https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/de/discussion/comment/5236104/#Comment_5236104

    Jennifer

Short version: He contacted the steam support and they blame ZOS.

Yeah because Valve Corp. isn't known for deflecting blame *at all* /s

Not agreeing with you. I could still be a combination of both. Steam may not have had a client update but something on the backend may have changed or got corrupted.

Hopefully they get it resolved soon

Yes, but on most of Steam games they are just basically downloaded to the steam folder and just launched from there. I would imagine there is a significant amount of authentication that goes on between the Steam launcher and ZOS before the client is loaded. I don’t think you can compare what goes on with most Steam games as to what is happening when the ESO Steam launcher is activated.

Hmm, I know that you can still run any steam game without steam, through the exec, run it and simply type your account then? if they are linked you must have an @x... account...

Even if it is more complex launching process, I still fail to see how what I said and what you are saying still can't both be true.

The bottom line here is none of us know who is actually to blame and with such poor communication from ZOS on this issue...they are going to take flack for it. Not too hard to figure it out.
ZOS could correct this issue if they really wanted to, yet they choose to just put out a blanket statement each time this goes out on Steam, offering no details at all about what the issue may be.
Whoever runs the Bethesda Support Twitter feed has one of the most secure jobs in the world at the moment. I don't think they get one break about telling us another game is down and they are "looking into it".

No, if you bought the game after 2016, its not working for most steam users.

I appreciate that you are trying to help.

What happens with Steam is that it logs you in automatically, bypassing the login screen where you type in username and password. if you use the launcher manually, you get this message:

    N_m85QYXTh6DR3Exmpg76g.png

You can not bypass this or use your account username and password manually if you bought the game after a certain date in 2016. All you get is the error message.

I bought the game in Nov of last year. Yesterday morning I purchased the base game through ZOS that was on sale for $10, using my acct credentials. I am now able to login using the ESO64.exe, and still have everything that I had and can log in either way.

Here's what we can surmise from all the information we can see about what is going on:

    1. Playing games through Steam is rarely a problem, except for ESO.
    2. If you bought the game directly from ZoS, you can play the game as long as the game server is up.
    3. If you bought the game from Steam before November 2016, you can launch ESO64.exe directly and login and play if the regular steam login does not.
    4. If you bought the game from Steam after November 2016, you cannot launch ESO64.exe and login because the client informs you that launching from steam is required.
    5. Sometime around November 2016, a system was put into place that does not give Steam ESO players a "true" ESO user id. It is only valid if launched through steam.

Whenever this now frequent problem with Steam ESO login occurs, it's related to the "system" that was put in place in #5 above. Why was this change made? ZoS could explain it to us and we'd at least know the reason for it. Why does it break down as often as it does?

I'm coming out and saying here it...

Stop ranting and blaming ZOS because you are having trouble with accessing the game through Steam. This makes about as much sense as console people complaining about double-dipping subscription fees because Sony forces them to pay twice to play this game. It's not ZOS's fault you chose a proprietary conduit to play ESO, and now you're getting hosed for that choice. That choice was your choice. The difficulties you're facing are not at all the difficulties anyone else who purchased the game normally through Zenimax have at all.... These are EXCLUSIVELY YOUR problems.

Complain with Steam. Stop distorting the signal to noise ratio here on the ESO forums.

    Ranting about ranting? Hypocrisy much?

Seriously? Did you have this Steam login problem before and now since you bought the base game directly from ZoS, it went away? Interesting.

I did purchase the gold pack through steam, I was able to port to hew's bane and gold coast. I also pre purchased Summerset from them was able to port there also. From all I can tell it is all there, if not I can still login using the steam client.

I am just going to say it. Being forced play a game with a certain client open is stupid and a practice that needs to die.

You should be able to though. The message says "please." My response to that is "No, thank you." I'd rather play the game without the steam client sucking up additional resources.

Can someone else confirm that if you are a steam user and experience these recurring login issues, if you login to ESO's website using your account information and purchase the base game that's on sale for $10, it will let you login using the standard launcher or ESO64.exe?

People in this thread have had some success with rebuying the game from ZoS:

I won't rebuy. I've spent my share of money on all the dlc's I won't pay more just because ZOS can't seem to fix the problem.

The thing is they did put ESO on Steam and you can buy it there - so they are responsible for making it work.
Okay, let's assume something-something happened, both are to blame, I get that a problem like this will not be fixed in an instant, I really do. So I will be flooding the forum because I mostly want an explanation. Some form of statement - that or that problem has arisen, we are working on it, here is an estimated time, we're sorry. Something, anything to akonowledge a good chunk of their players is unable to play for hours.
At this point I don't care who is responsible (though the fact that it happened just after the update doesn't bode well for ZOS) - I am just mad at ZOS for no communication with players.

So in talking to my guild mates this morning everyone that has ESO through steam are also having issues with other Online games, especially Wildstar, GR Wildlands, and Neverwinter.

So I don't think either side can definitively say on which end it is.

The best thing we can do is chill and ride it out, it's not like they aren't aware or aren't working on it.

Can confirm that did work for me and 2 guildies. May need you the reset your password tho and use the code several times to activate as it says its invalid but it definitly works.
