Nothing that adds a stacking penalty and nothing really major but there should be a slight cost to stamina when jumping.

People Jump in this game because Jumping can do things in other games. Not because it is really a thing in this game.

The only reason I can think to jump, other that getting around Terrain is to gain LOS on a target that is behind a crowd of Mobs for something like Chains. Attacking mobs that are behind the mobs attacking me seems counter productive otherwise. I don't see why this would be different in PvP.

It also seems to me that it would slow down the rotations, but I don't bounce around like I am on a Pogo Stick so I don't know as far as this game goes. I have noticed that sometimes I can't fire a skill if say I am jumping down from a ledge, so that is why I think it could slow things down.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Dodge roll just grants You dodging of direct dmg attacks when jumping can sometimes help but that isnt granted. All range attacks will still hit You it's usefull only agaisnt meele opponents and only if they suck at game.

Jumping by desingn gives You no defensive adventages and it's designed to help bypass the obstacles on Your way and even this isnt granted since sometimes You need to jump like 10 times to finally hop on Your desire point. What would happen if You would have to dodge like 10 times sometimes to finally avoid an attack ? Core mechanics that cost You stamina actually allows You to reduce incoming dmg by design.

People bunny-hop in this game, supposedly, to get a better view of the battlefield. So I have been told.

It's no defence, they still get hit. I have hit people with flame clench in mid-air before and laughed as they get knocked miles away... (Well, maybe not miles but you get my point)

I seem to remember in Oblivion jumping levelled up Acrobatics or something. So I spent most of the game bunny-hopping everywhere. :D

Without reading the responses - if jump acts like roll dodge, it should cost like roll dodge.

What I love is when someone starts a thread 'does jumping do anything' generally there are a load of vague smoke and mirror responses to detract from the fact that it does. Those that know, know ;)

Bunny hopping comes from games that have have hitboxes. You would jump to lessen your hitbox and make it harder to hit you. It doesn't apply here but the PvPers have already been conditioned.

I jump a lot when I need to swap bars and stay moving because I'm on console... not sure I should be punished for that. Also don't think I should be penalized for jumping over little pebbles or a blade of grass that my character for some reason can't just walk over.

it provides benefit, if you are slowed mid-jump you will continue the rest of the jump at full speed.
another one is that if you start casting while jumping, you won't be slowed by the cast.

... why haven’t you re-mapped your weapon swap? Way easier! I weapon swap with R3 on PS4 and crouch with my left directional button.

That aside, yeah, don’t see why there is any need to add a stamina cost to jumping. If seeing other players jumping is “annoying” to you, then I don’t know what to tell you. Personally, I’ll be annoyed by things that actually matter (e.g. people who queue as damage dealers for vet dungeons while being incapable of doing more than 10k damage).

Yea, I've heard of people doing that but it's become second nature to jump before a bar swap on the run to keep moving. At this point it's just not worth it.

I personally think it's silly that jumping around helps dodge attacks. If jumping is going to count as a dodge, then should consume stamina like the dodge roll, otherwise jumping should not count as a dodge.

    Discuss

Jumping doest not help dodge attacks. The reason you would see a dodged attack on a jumping opponent is because you continue to dodge ranged projectiles if they were cast at any time during your roll. This means if you attack an opponent with a bow as they are rolling, the attack counts as dodged and will register as a dodged attack once it reaches them even if thier roll is done and they may be performing another action (this is very easy to see with skills like snipe that can register as dodged long after the initial roll).

The actual advantages of jumping in combat are mostly limited to being able to move faster in the air while blocking, or preventing the initail portion of a snare by being midair when its aplied. Most people do not utilize jumping in this way however and jump for no added benefit.

Hope that helps clear up some misconceptions!

Jumping in real life takes energy so I think it should cost stamina

Well if we are talking about real life, how come we don't have to go to the bathroom? Like maybe that is why people are jumping around, they NEED TO GO.

Come on, don't bring in real life mechanics into the game. Otherwise we wouldn't have swimming in any armour let alone heavy armour. And then about this magika stuff happening.

By that logic swinging any weapon, even staff should consume some stamina. Casting skills, even magicka ones should consume some stamina ( its not easy to do these moves 70 times in a row irl, try it out). Just leave jumping alone. Anyone can jump, be it sorc, DK or a nimble nightblade. Any changes to this would break ESO some more.
Add that ESO has some aim assist so jumping will not help much avoiding hits, granted the aim assist has been pretty buggy after homestead and gone on and off.
Single target abilities often require center of mass to hit even if just one huge boss.
Improving this will help resolve the problem.
Only benefit of jumping if resolved would make it harder to target an single serious wounded enemy player in an group.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Now for serious post, do you know why people jump? I find myself jumping and think it's so stupid, BUT I CAN'T stop it.

Why? It is an The Elder Scrolls thing to do. This is what I am sure most of us have been doing since Arena. I believe it was mostly done in Morrowind (or was it Oblivion) so we could level up what ever skill it was that had jumping in it.

So it's the only natural thing to do when playing a game that has Elder Scrolls in it. It's a natural part of life and playing an Elder Scrolls game without jumping while we are going to our destination is like not breathing. :)
