Who's Been Through a Character Culling?

I don't get why people delete characters when they have free slots like you did.

What harm was your templar doing? Just don't play it, someday you may regret it and have to redo it all again.

As for leveling, don't do quests, just grind exp. Then get enough skyshards for your requirements.

I have 13 characters some I haven't played properly for a year but I don't delete as one day they might be played again. I also make sure to get a character for every role possible, only ones I'm missing are mag Warden and tank Warden but I won't bother with them

I honestly wish I could class change. My main is my crafter. I’m kinda sick of Stam dk, but I don’t want to make a new main.

I’ve had plenty of characters deleted. Cull the herd.

I make and delete characters constantly, and being someone who always likes to create some general backstory and personality for each, you can imagine it's quite the guilty feeling when I decide I have to delete one for one reason or another, and also quite time-consuming creating each character. I like having a small roster of characters, for similar reasons. If achievements were account-wide I might be more open to having more.

I once deleted my second main that had done most of the quests in the game compared to any other character, and eventually regretted it some several months later, but I was able to get it back by contacting support about it :) now she's a Tamriel Hero - my first to have that title! And probably only one of mine that will ever be, too. Much as I love the quests in this game, and look forward to every new one, doing every side quest and main quest on a new character that will probably be deleted before it gets halfway there isn't something I want to attempt. I'll probably make more questing characters eventually, but not make them Tamriel Heroes.

I know the feeling. I mained an AD magSorc for a very long time, then created an EP MagPlar and done a lot of PvE and dungeon and trial healing with him until Morrowind came out. I instantly made a MagWarden, who then turned into a StamWarden then back to Mag, back to stam and eventually back to MagWarden.

Since I mainly PvP these days I tend to stick to my MagSorc or MagWarden. I still do like my MagPlar, but as a hardcore AD fanboy I always feel very guilty taking this Templar onto the field, hoping that none of my guildies spot me! Unfortunately due to work contraints it is hard for me to start a new character in the correct (correct for me) alliance. I started my first Nightblade (spec into Mag, as I don't enjoy stamina play style as much) a couple of months ago. 7 Levels to go until I reach CP level, but I always tend to go back to my Sorcerer. It took a lot of time and grinding to gear him out in golden gear.

My advice: don't do it. I regret deleting a couple of my characters for similar reasons.

Even though leveling a replacement can be quick, it takes -forever- to get back skill lines and skyshards.

Try a healer for your templar. Try a tank with the dk.

I made an AD sorc to play with AD friends, but they stopped playing and I had to delete her in order to make room for new chars.

She was only level 10. :'(

About the "culling" (I didn't know this word, for some reason I thought the meaning was hard management or something like that) I have deleted two characters, fully leveled, with full horse training, one of them was my magicka Khajiit who almost got flawless with subpar equipment and 3 skills unmorphed when entered, the other one was a char for which I have even spent time in mage books hunting and I had no regret at all deleting them, because there was something very wrong with these two characters for me: the alliance.
I've created them at the beginning, I was new and had planned I would have bought any race any alliance later on, because I didn't know what any race any alliance truly was, zos sucks at descriptions for their products, I was genuinely convinced it was a token (strange to think there was no possibility whatsoever to change alliance), when I discovered it was not, I kept them (never went in ava location though) but I never liked that, until the day I've decided it was better to recreate them, identical (only with the correct alliance), it's been a relieve for me, finally happy with them.

Now, if what bothers you is something similar to this, something you cannot absolutely like even if you try, I say go ahead, delete! Otherwise I would suggest you to leave them alone! Only delete if you want to make space for new ones, or you could have some regrets, think about it carefully.

That point is: DO NOT EVER DELETE YOUR CHARACTERS BECAUSE THIS GAME CHANGES ALL THE TIME, especially those who've racked up significant leveling/research/mount purchases.

Just advice, as I definitely regret deleting my NB.

I currently have twelve characters, and a thirteenth planned for when Summerset arrives. I have culled low level characters many times as part of my character creation. Concepts get remade sometimes several times before I am happy with them. High level characters would require a very good reason to cull, I have not done this.

I try to make my characters builds diverse enough that the changes to the game over time always leave me with characters in a good pace.

I have at least two of each class, one magicka focused, and one stamina focused some are more tanky, other are more dps focused. Respecting into a full tank, or a full dps and back requires less time, and effort than starting over.

My list just keeps growing. I was using the last slot/s to make throw away characters, get them to 10 and run them through some non-vet PvP before deleting them. As we got more slots though, I started making and keeping permanent versions of them. I have 11 DC characters, one stam & mag version of each class, plus one hybrid DK tank, each one of the ten races not including my main. I also have a 2×2 set of mag/stam characters for EP and AD across the original 4 classes.

Recently, I tried to make that an even 10 by deleting the mag DK. After a couple shufflings, I ended up remaking her, only now I have to do the horse training over again. Ah well. I've settled where I am, unless ZOS wants to open another slot... I'm bad at this topic OP.

I mean, if it's a freshly leveled character with not even their class skills fully done it's not a big deal. It'll take a day or two to get them back up. But if it's a fully geared, maxed, leveled, I wouldn't delete them. Try a race change, a role change, or even just demote them to backup crafter. Loosing that much progress isn't really worth it.

I've deleted characters in the past. I deleted a Dunmer DK when they changed SDK to be poison and MDK to be fire. That character was max level and max horse so it was a painful decision but I didn't like that change and had no interest in having an MDK.

Other than that I have deleted mules to make other characters. I still have the first character I made at launch.

Right now, I have 14 max level, and one mule. 13 have max horse, and the the 14th is about half done. I don't think that I'll delete any of max horse characters again because of the time invested for that. The mule will get deleted for a new character with Summerset to play the new tutorial then probably be a mule.

Back when I filled up my 8 slots with mules, I chose 2 of each class and chose viable magicka/stamina combinations. I learned my lesson when I made an enchanting alt, got them to like 42 enchanting back when it was painfully slow, and deleted them for crappy race choice.

I now have 14 characters, mainly for anniversary crafting writs. All of them are optimal races for playing a role in a class. I try to evenly distribute classes.

I would never delete a character unless I needed the slot. I don't see the benefit. I find it bizarre than anyone would do so.

I have 15 toons right now. I deleted a couple to make roon for the ones I have now. I don't think I've deleted more than 2-3 toons at a time and it's rare. By level 20 i know if a toon is a keeper, usually well before that. But in truth, I usually only make toons when I have a good reason too, and it's taken me 3 years to max out my character slots. The only toons in danger of deletion right now are my two wardens since the class is a mess imo. But as it stands, my very first toon and my last toons are nightblades and there's something about that i really like. Started ESO on a NB, will go out on a NB. I'm seriously considering quitting the game, and part of me wanted to revisit leveling a NB now that I know the class and laugh at myself at want a noob I was when I made my first NB. So I probably won't delete anymore, as I don't want to make any new ones after this.

This. The only time I would ever delete a character is if I needed the slot for a new one. They cost absolutely nothing sitting there, even if I never play them again.

(And they're always available if, say, I need to mule a few items or if I want to run a few more crafting writs for an event that gives prizes for daily quests ;) )

There's a difference between deleting a level 50 char and a lower level char.

I have deleted loads of the latter, particularly when I made a mess of levelling up skills and not grabbing enough skill points early.

I also at one point was creating too many breton templar healers and tanks, so I chopped the ones I were not using. Due to a mix up, I meant to keep the one which had researched some traits as a bank, but deleted the wrong one :o

I find that I don't need to do anything more than threaten them. With respec scrolls in the level-up rewards, they can shape up if they want to.

Also I see no point in creating more than 3 of each class, or more than 2 of the same build of the respective class, or even worse, same race in class, because they will most likely end up the same. That's why it's very unlikely I will delete a character, since they are not redundant in that regard. Leveling is pretty tedious, and that's nothing compared to gathering skill points, books, leveling AvA and Undaunted. So I'd rather quit the game for good than waste one of the characters I've done that on.

Why do you need to delete them?

I know I'll rarely ever play them, and my characters were meant for more than just sitting in that character list, mocking my inability to enjoy them. Having them absent from the log in screen makes it easier on me to enjoy the characters I actually put effort into and WANT to put effort into. Any others are just a depressing distraction.

I have never deleted a leveled character and never will. I have 14 characters and even the most useless of them is dear to my heart and will never be deleted.

My theory is that the game is always changing and you never know what the future holds. I have also put a lot of gold and time into bag space, horse training, leveling up their crafting skills. At worst they can store gear, do crafting writs and collect hireling mail.

I would never delete actual character :o Well... Two years ago I almost made this mistake with my oldest character, magblade. He was only level 12 but had lot of horse training finished and all crafts leveled. I really didn't like his face though :/ At some point I decided I couldn't look at this face anymore. He was saved literally some moments before I was going to log out and delete him - some player posted "WTS vampire bite" in zone chat... I wasn't going to play as vampires, but that moment I thought "can try it, will be no harm since this character has no hope". Vampirism turned out to be his fate - it saved him from removal, and me from making big mistake :)

    mJd75DM.jpg

I've deleted only characters who were created to be mules (and it was sad when they had 200 bag spaces).

So far I have 2 characters of each class - stamina and magicka versions. And another one... magdk I've created during last event. My dk tank already has all skills, armor types and weapons fully leveled - so I can respec him to mag dd/stam dd anytime. But this would be such a madness to do each time :/ So this new character is now here, level 50 with many needed skills, weapons and armor types leveled - and still has almost no horse training, needs to get many skyshards and level guilds, and is in process of leveling all crafts. Very discouraging :D

I simply like to know they are here, all classes and specs available anytime. They also make good mules while I'm not playing them :D Although everytime developers nerf something, at least one of my characters is affected.

I've never had a 'culling' in the sense of deleting multiple characters at once, but I have deleted characters before and may well do it again. For a long time we didn't have things like name and appearance change tokens so the only way to change a character was to delete them and start over, and there's some changes which can still only be made that way. In other cases it just seems like a waste of money to pay for a change when the character is low level and it wouldn't take long to level them up again.

Even when I've deleted a character and haven't re-made them it doesn't bother me. If they're that memorable or meaningful to me they'll be back sooner or later. One of my main characters in ESO started out over 15 years ago in Ultima Online and has been used in most western RPGs I've played since. When I first made her in ESO she was a templar, then got deleted because she was too similar to my other templar, then was re-made as a warden. Another ESO character started out in Dragon Age: Origins as a throw-away character to see an alternate origin story.

Deleting them doesn't mean losing the character, only the progress I've made on them. And since I enjoy levelling it doesn't bother me to have to re-do it.
