Which gender do you choose to play in-game and why?

Both, but mostly I play the opposite gender to my own. I don't treat the in-game character as my avatar, rather they're my apprentice, and I'm guiding them. An opposite gender apprentice is more entertaining to watch.

The exceptions are for those times when the RP dictates a specific gender for the character.

11 female characters i find it boring to play males in mmos... also 2000 hours later wont be watching a mans butt as i run through questing since 90% of eso is spent staring at your own characters back side

This comment (and I've seen it from EQ to present) always mystifies me. I'm too busy watching where I'm going, looking for regs, etc. to be staring at my character...any part of my character.

    I must be odd.

They are just too proud or ashamed to admit that they like playing barbie as well - that's behind it. And in general there are more fashion option for female characters in games - so this is basically why they do it.

I chose female because I mainly play female characters in eso, but I do have an alt that I use once in a while that is male.

I had a fellow Guildie once, in another mmo, ask me why I was playing a male character because girls should only play girls and only guys should be allowed to make characters of the opposite gender.

I personally think it's no issue either way until you get a guy playing a girl that's trying to hit on you, then it becomes weird. Haha...

I would say both, but in ESO it's mostly women. That's because i like the looks of the female versions in this game better, the males aren't that great (especially Nord, Orc, Bosmer and Breton males don't look good imo). Except for Argonians and Khajiit, they're cool af. I have a male Khajiit and a male Argonian, the rest are female.

In Skyrim, however, i mostly have males (Argonian, Nord, Redguard) because i like the looks of them better. (only 1 female Breton)

However, unlike some people, my manhood or straightness does not disappear by playing as a female. I don't feel awkward and i don't fantasize being a woman, neither do i fantasize as being any game character ever. Just as when i read a book, i don't fantasize about being the protagonist. I just merely learn their story from their point of view.

Try an imperial - they make for quite awesome males, if you make them a bit older. My imperial male has an arabic look to him, which goes well with one of the pirate outfits. My other male characters are Khajiit and Argonian, each of them awesome in his own right. I have still a character slot available, maybe I will try another male from one of the humanoid races again.

I usually play female chars since i am one, unless the race is Argonian. Then its a male. Mostly because there is nothing appealing about a Lizard with boobs.

Ah come on dude. Sure you do. That's the entiiiiiiire reason to play this kind of game. You immerse yourself in the character you are playing, and you become them to some extent. There's no need to be insecure about your manhood or your straightness, it's not like you're sucking guys off in the Riften tavern... Is it?

Anyway, I play a dude, because, well, I can't really place myself in the mindset of a female character, and my main is basically a self-insertion.
On the other hand though, I'm a raging furry, and I'm bitter that my only options are nasty cats. I'd buy ten lifetime ESO subscriptions if they added those fox people from old-school ESO lore.

That's cool you can admit you can't empathize with women characters and that you have no idea what their experiences and viewpoints might be. I just hope that self-awareness applies to real life women.

I make mostly females because Im a guy and the camera view is from behind. Prefer to watch a female butt. 2 of 10 characters are male but that's more role play of that character than anything else.

Most of my characters are male. The reason is because the females stand a bit odd, with their breasts and butts thrust out. Making their breasts and butts small helps, but still it's an unnatural way to stand and it bugs me. I'm female IRL BTW, just sayin'.

for me, it depends on why I'm playing that character.

When I'm playing a character to enjoy the game, I tend to choose female, because they simply are more enjoyable to look at for me. If it involves hours of my time, I'd rather look at a pleasant shape then a flat hairy butt.

When I'm playing to get into the story, I play a guy. I am a guy, and when I play for the story I want to connect with the experience, and It's hard to connect with something I'm not.

No. Maybe for you but not everyone.

Tell me how exactly do i immerse myself with a character who only has 1-2 dialogue options which don't match anything i'd ever say in a similar situation. And each choice has 1-2 consequences that won't later on matter anything.

I don't find games very immersive in the role playing aspect. I just play for fun and appreciate good story writing/dialogue, beautiful textures, fun gameplay. But i do not imagine being or try to relate to the character i play. As a teenager i tried but i just didn't like role playing, but rather experiencing it like a story. Or just have fun playing it. The only thing I can truly have an impact on is the looks of the character, and i don't call that immersion. And if my character is the same sex doesn't mean i'll instantly relate to and associate with it.

Yea zenimax sometimes puts up 2 different dialogue options but i find them mostly irrelevant because there are no spectacular consequences. I choose the option that i find is more likely to offer something useful gameplay wise. But that doesn't mean it offers immersion.

About that insecurity thing you said, well, let's just say that some people need their pixels to have a *** to make them feel like a man.
